Hello to all. Does anyone know of a review course for CNS certification or for that matter, books or materials of any kind that I could study to prepare myself ? I have just a couple of months to go and then I graduate and will be applying for the test shortly thereafter. I will be concentrating my efforts on MED./SURG. just to keep it general and then I can always specialize and move on from there. I value any professional comments or suggestions and look foward to hearing from you. Greg 06

Sad but true

Hello Vince, There is extreme animosity between the two parties listed, especially when they get the same compensation for doing the same job. There is a basic difference in that obviously, the AA does not usually have the nursing backround and therefore is missing a vital element of the entire package. "You can train a monkey to administer Anesthesia but it takes a trained professional to know what to do when things go wrong". The AA has an undergraduate degree in anything from biophysics to pharmacokinetics and then does twenty-four mos. training in Anesthesia school as a graduate program. Two programs that I know of, Case Western in Cleveland and Emory in Atlanta. The AA programs were started early in the 1970's due to the extreme shortage of Anesthesia personnel and I guess the idea never really took off. The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati,Ohio uses the AA almost exclusively and for the most part these individuals are very bright/gifted people. They have had their issues as a profession but who hasn't. I guess you could look at it both ways. I have never had any problems recovering the patients that they have gassed and thought for the most part, they did a pretty descent job. See ya,g

Maybe nursing isn't for you Skye. Do you have other interests? Other options? Don't get locked into something that you hate for the rest of your life. I was glad to go into Anesthesia or I probably would have left the profession a long time ago. Give it a little time but if the passion ain't there don't try to make nursing something that it simply may not be for you.
