1st day of NS was aug 15 [now going on my 7th week!!] on that 1st day, classes started at 8am - however, we were told that if we wanted a seat near the front of the room, we should come around 6:30am, put our books down and go eat breakfast. in a class of 102, I guess it was necessary. I have to drive an hours commute, so I didn't get to school until 7:15am - and my seat is in the VERY back of the class. The 1st day was mainly orientation for us. they split us up in groups and half of us learned about all our media requirements [have to watch videos/dvds to prepare for some classes] and the other class went into a lab that was all set up with our Uniform people and all their goodies. We tried on uniforms and bought all medical stuff that we didn't have yet. THEN, the seniors (55 of them left from their class of 120something) treated us to a pizza/chip/ big cake lunch. Once we were all done w/ our supplies, making sure they had everything in our Nursing packets [physical/SS card/Vaccinations/Identity stuff ....] we could go and start studying!! We're taking our 3rd fundamentals test this week. It has been hard, but you get out what you put in for it. YOU are the only one that can study and complete check offs. We've already had our bed bath check off and Vital signs check offs are this week. Those are the only things we'll be able to do in clinical that starts in November.

sooo.... yeah, my school skips all over the book. no order at all. I'm sure some years ago there was some order to it, but we're all over the place. going on my 7th week of nursing school and so far, A's and B's!!!!! I'm starting to adjust to studying/family time/practicing skills - it's all a balancing act that is starting to make sense. Still hard! But it will be WELL worth it 4 semesters from now..

I'm at Orangeburg-Calhoun Tech. I started in X-Ray tech @ Midlands Technical College, but got pregnant and started my family right before clinicals started. Then, just decided I wanted to do nursing instead - already have all prereqs except for that microbiology class. And I have heard horror stories about never getting to see your family. I guess you get out of it what you put into it and there will be sacrifices made in all areas too.

thanks everyone! i don't want to stress myself out since i'm sure there will be plenty of that in the months ahead i hear the notecards thing! i won't have to take micro until spring semester and i've already been pulling notes from a site i used for A&P (phenomenal site.. http://www.midlandstech.edu/science/kelleherk/) I'm not working anymore and have a 2 year old and busy husband. I just don't want to get bogged down in trying to get all the reading in and avoid my family, but for some reason, I think that is exactly what will be happening for the next 5 semesters..

yes, that's what I'm afraid of [the skipping all over the place]. I know nursing school is VERY demanding.

I'm starting nursing school MONDAY!! I just got all my books last week for my 1st semester and have already started reading them and taking notes. Fundamentals and Nutrition. I also got my Med-Surge books but not really sure when that all starts. So, is it overkill to be reading and taking notes before I get into the classes? Will the professors pick and choose what they want to teach in the books? I'm super excited and want to get as 'ahead' as I can in knowing the material. I also got a Diagnostic Laboratory Test w/ Nursing Implications book and just started looking over it too. Is it good to go into class with an idea of what they are teaching?

at my school, they look at everything combined: transcripts, TEAS scores, interview skills.. I think they have a pretty good idea of what kind of student you are and don't put too much weight on one particular thing. I wouldn't worry about it. I can't remember how I did on my TEAS but I know I just barely scored what was needed (*not good at standardized tests either) my gpa was 3.9 soooooo..... I think you'll be fine. Don't stress about it. :)

http://www.midlandstech.edu/science/kelleherk/210/ this professor hasn't taught this class at this school since 2006 i think.. but even my lab teachers in bio 210 & bio 211 used this site to 'quiz' us before we had our lab quizzes.

lol! i was going to put up the site too!! i love sharing it with everyone i can. it helped me tremendously and he also has a site for microbiology like this that i've already been looking over :)

i've never sent a msg on here before - pretty new to the site. i start nursing school aug 15 and have already taken anatomy/physiology. my school split the class into 2 sections BIO 210 and BIO 211. the notes online i used that helped me a bunch were from this professor http://www.midlandstech.edu/science/kelleherk/210/ i'm probably going to use his microbiology notes when i have to take that course too. i'm looking online for nursing 101/fundamentals of nursing notes. i like to be prepared and study ahead for class, but i can't get my books until 8/9, so looking online for as much info as i can find too!
