  1. I thought for sure judge judy would still respect the nurse, as a professional!!!! geeze imagine if I stood up as an LPN she would have laughed at me. People have no idea what we nurses go through and do on a daily basis.
  2. I saw a JUDGE JUDY episode (who I love) not long ago and she ****** me off!.. I usually always agree with her choices to grill and humilate evil people. This episode was about some chic suing some dude and she had her mom testify as a registered nurse witness. She stood up and said " yes judge judy I'm a registered nurse, and I do this and that and i've take care of these patients and specialize in this and that" judge judy stopped her and said what kind of education do you have? she said "I have my associates in nursing." Judge judy said " are you kidding me?! sit down! " that isnt formal education.!!" i was SHOCKED AND disgusted with her..
  3. I got in a hospital as a PCA that was known for hiring lots of LPNS, i worked for a few months and once a LPN position opened i applied and had other nurses put a good word in for me and i got the job'!.. try that too
  4. thnk you!! all great advice, I think over time I will learn to adapt, but its sooo frustrating that they cant give you 5 minutes, today i called 3 and all 3 gave me a hard time. " DOCTOR her hr is 40, can i hold this med, do you want something else ordered,? ' NO did i say i wanted something, why are you calling me about that, jus hold it.. !! . 2# doctor, the results are in for the stress test, i start reading.... 'I ALREADY READ THAT!!. , I NEED THE NUCLEAR REPORT!!.. ok, let me look for it on the computer, " if you dont know what your doing please give me a nurse who does!!'!!!.. and the 3rd doctor was upset bc he had patients in the office!! " i have patients waiting for me, why are you calling me''' !! HELLO... IM CALLING FROM THE HOSPITAL AND THEY ARE SICK, AND THIS IS STEPDOWN lol.. sorry guys
  5. I'm a new nurse and have such a hard time calling doctors. I got a admission yesterday and needed to call for orders and i felt so rushed.. My preceptor has been helping me write down a few things to ask but by the time I ask him, hes like ok. ok ok.. bye... I hang up and realize, crap i wanted to ask this. UGH.. I dont know, plus i feel so dumb when he asks questions. ADVICE!!? :)
  6. I would keep looking for a position and if not take a PCA position for now,. I graduated LPN school and got hired in a hospital really quick while i waited to take boards, then once i got my license i kept watching for a LPN to open and I got hired right away. Its so important while in RN school to work as a nurse, im learning so much as a nurse that I never would of learned if i stayed a PCA, meds, diseases, nursing care. I'm starting school again in may to finish my last two semesters and I'm so glad im nursing so i can use all this knowledge I'm learning. You don't have to work for a nursing home if you want a hospital position.
  7. No.. I was just hired as a new grad cardiac LPN..I think some hospitals are trying to obtain MAGNET status and want to hire higher level education..Which doesn't always work because its costly. If these places do this that mean that RNS will be BSN, and managers have to have MSNS and from a financial aspect how many MSNS are there. One the hospitals just tried this a few years ago in my area and then quickly learned it would cost to much, so went back to hiring LPNS and ADNS. I think that LPNS won't go anywhere because there will always be nursing homes, home care, hospice.:)
  8. OMG NOO!!.. this preceptor is treating you like a STUDENT AND YOU HAVE A LICENSE!.. she needs to get checked ASAP by you!!.. You don't need to go by anyones speed but your own. If you keep rushing your going to make a error and then it looks bad on you in your orientation phase!.. I'm in orientation now too and my preceptor doesnt stand over me thank god but I go as slow as i go and ask her to do things for me because what else is she doing. In my first week I kept saying, 'im so nervous, im so nervous, i dont want to mess up' and my manager said to me, If you weren't nervous, I would be nervous, bc an over confident new nurse who thinks they know it all, will make a mistake bc they never thought to ask any questions!..:)
  9. I love 20+ years, old school nurses!...As a new nurse, I don't feel comfortable going to a new RN bc they are a RN, I feel like less than 10 years and you still haven't seen it all. I hope one day to be a 30 year nurse and be able to guide the young ones like so many seasoned nurses have guided me.:) awww I think I'm going to pass out hugs tomorrow to them. haha
  10. what kind of question do you have?
  11. really!! that would be weird, to ask the BON and they refuse on you. I recently asked if LPNS could take critical labs over the phone from lab, bc for some odd reason they don't let us at this hospital. They replied so quickly and said YES..its within our scope to accept a critical and notify the physician. Some of the rules are just odd.
  12. LOL.. good for you... But noone mentioned 'ARTERIAL ACCESS". So your original comment wasn't needed. I was looking for current LPNS to answer my questions.
  13. Just wanted to give an update regarding LPNS using central/picc lines. I emailed the board of nursing in ohio and got a reply. "Thecommuter" venous access means peripheral or CENTRAL access, it doesn't mean through a vein only. It is not "way" out of scope of practice for a LPN in this state. This is the response. The regulations pertaining to LPN IV therapy are located in Section 4723.17, ORC, and Chapter 4723-17, OAC. A LPN who is IV therapy certified, acting under the direction of a RN or physician, may administer any of the approved solutions listed in Section 4723.17(D)(6)(a), ORC, and Rule 4723-17-03(B)(1), OAC, through a central venous line or PICC line. A LPN may inject heparin or normal saline to flush an intermittent infusion device or heparin lock. A LPN is not prohibited from flushing a PICC line that is being used intermittently with heparin or normal saline. a) 5% dextrose and water; (b) 5 % dextrose and lactated ringers; © 5% dextrose and normal saline; (d) Normal saline; (e) Lactated ringers; (f) 0.45 % sodium chloride and water; or (g) 0.2 % sodium chloride and water; or (2) Administer any of the solutions set forth in paragraph (B)(1) of this rule that contain vitamins or electrolytes after a registered nurse initiates the first infusion of the solution containing vitamins or electrolytes.
  14. I thought this as well but my hospital seems to be less restrictive.. My main question is what does VENOUS ACCESS mean? i know peripheral venous and central venous access.. My BON says LPN can administer thru "venous" what would you say venous access means? :)
  15. My hospital policy states that LPNS can administer fluids plain thru central lines and antibiotics, no drugs thru them though, and flush. Does this protect me thru the board?
  16. I still don't understand, the OBN says through a "venous line" is a central venous line considered a VENOUS LINE, in which a LPN can 1) Administer the following solutions through a venous line : (a) 5% dextrose and water; (b) 5 % dextrose and lactated ringers; © 5% dextrose and normal saline; (d) Normal saline; (e) Lactated ringers; (f) 0.45 % sodium chloride and water; or (g) 0.2 % sodium chloride and water; or (2) Administer any of the solutions set forth in paragraph (B)(1) of this rule that contain vitamins or electrolytes after a registered nurse initiates the first infusion of the solution containing vitamins or electrolytes.
  17. congrats!!!! IT WAS SO HARD! right... glad thats over lol
  18. OK... I knew this would happen and I need advice.. So I just started my new position and I'm in the orientation phase, which is involving IV therapy training. I'm a LPN new grad and was in class today and the IV THERAPY RN NURSE came in and showed us how to put IVS in and change picc dressings. As she was finishing the picc lesson, she explained who can do what with piccs.. According to her, a LPN can hang IV NS or an antibiotic in this hospital per HOSPITAL POLICY. The OHIO board is beyond VAGUE and I want to know what to do!! I don't want to do something wrong, she also said I can flush a picc, but no draw backs and of coorifice no meds pushed.!! please someone help me wrap my head around this.. Is hospital policy legally practicing within scope? im so confused.. Thnku
  19. I took my NCLEX-PN in October and what you need to understand is LPN's reinforce all TEACHING. My exam had so many teaching aspects to it. It assumes that the patient has had a RN explain to them already so your reinforcing that knowledge. You have to know what it is your going to teach them, I had to reinforce several medications and how to take them and with or without food so knowing meds is important. Teaching them what signs and symptoms they have to be watching for and when to call their doctor. As LPNS we are assessing the patient and reporting these things from what we know about diseases to the doctor or RN. So all those choices are correct. If a question popped up like "are you doing the initial assessment?" then that would be incorrect. hope that helps at all
  20. Maravillosa! dont get discouraged! the same thing happened to me, in a way. I interviewed with the nurse manager recently, had an amazing interview and she said I would be in orientation and everything. I get home and decide to check the website where you can view submitted applications and there's a update reading "thank you for your time, but we are seeking other candidates" I like you balled my eyes out and thought that maybe she really didn't like me!! So i called HR and they checked my account and realized they closed me by accident!! after allllll that.. I was so upset.. before i called HR I emailed the manager and she said I did great!!.. So it could be an ERROR.
  21. Thanks guys! yea i thought it seemed fair and I could live with this for awhile, I love this hospital bc they utilize the LPNS everywhere in the hospital and allow us to practice like we were meant to! Still makes no sense why some hospitals want RN only.
  22. north east CLEVELAND, OHIO
  23. Im curious. Im a brand new LPN and jus accepted a position on a cardiac stepdown unit and the rate is $19.64 do you guys think this is a good start rate?? I'm more excited to learn all about cardiac disease's than the rate and am beyond excited to take care of them! but I'm wondering where im at compared to other new grads:)
  24. thnku!!!..I totally understand why people are retaking it.. since they uped the level of our board its no joke..!
