Hey, any of you GI nurses know about cautery?
Did you have bleeding ulcers, AVM's, Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) sometimes called watermelon stomach? There are other methods to control bleeding besides cautery. There are injection techniques with different sclerosing medication, laser treatments. You should stop all nsaids, asprin and be on a PPI like prilosec, protonix or H2 blockers like tagamet, pepcid. Are you having a gastroentrologist or surgeon treat you? You could also take iron supplement and eat foods high in iron to combat the anemia.

Numbing IV sites
emlamax works even faster than emla usually in 20 minutes. I have started IV's with and without lidocaine. As expected some patients are more tolerable than others. I have started without lido and the patient says "I didn't feel a thing" but if they are very anxious about IV start I use lido. Sometimes the placebo effect works.

Colonoscopy prep
We have good success with golytely, 1/2 lytely(which is biscodyl tablets early in the day and 2 liters of golyte in the evening) or visicol tablets. All preps require clear liquids the day before. The more liquids the better the prep. The key success to the prep is drinking alot of liquids with the prep substance to flush out the colon.

staffing a freestanding endoscopy unit
Our GI lab is in the hospital but has designated staff. We have 2 rooms and average 15-20 cases per day. We staff endo rooms with 1 RN and 1 LPN per room. The pre and post area is staffed with 4-5 RN's with staggered start times and 1 LPN to allow for break and lunch relief. We also have a secretary for computer/paper work. We work 5 days a week but cover call during off hours.

diploma RN to BSN
I am a diploma RN and am interested in obtaining a BSN. I started looking online and found some interesting programs. I was wondering if anyone else has used this method. Working full time and with a family, online would be great. The one particular program Deaconess College of Nursing mentions awarding the diploma nurse credits toward the BSN. Another program through Rochville University awards degrees based on life experiences including job history, educational acheivements, earned CEU's, etc. Please let me know of any program I might be interested in and how long could I expect it to take.

Gastroenterology certification
Interested in information from anyone who has taken the CBGNA certification test. Was it difficult, did you pass the first time, any specific review course or test preparation that was helpful?
