  1. Hello Chemistry Fall group, I'm taking Chem 108 and Microbiology this Fall. I start Mon Aug 20th. Wish me luck!! I hope to stop on in if I have any questions.
  2. Wow, this post actually got my attention. At the LTCF where I work, almost all the cna's and care staff have some degree of difficulty with english. It is very frustrating since all the lead/management staff speak english fluently and they (cna's and care staff) do not. I'm new to the facility (6 months) and I used to take offense to the staff because I speak english fluently. They have tremendous difficulty with the idea of infection control. When I brought it up with our nurse (whom I don't respect) she took offense to my suggestions. Hence the reason I no longer have respect for her. I'm only doing what I'm suppose to do and I get the bad reputation of thinking I'm better than everyone else. I'm hoping to move on to another facility where my attention to infection control/ washing hands/using gloves is appreciated. So yes, I totally understand with the frustration. Basically you can not change people and from what I learned at our LTCF the lead/management staff is totally dependent on their non-english speaking staff.
  3. Saddleback College student here...Transferred from Riverside CC...moved down to South OC. I will be taking Anatomy in the Fall. I'm taking Eng 1A now (Summer) and I just took Bio 20 (Spring). I need to complete my sciences and then I can apply. Possibly Fall 07. Tessa~
  4. Hello, I recently started working as a caregiver at a LTC here in S. Calif ( 3 months). Yesterday a family member of a resident that I provide care for, visited. This family member gave me in depth detail on how their family member had a raging staph infection last year and proceeded to tell me to take precaution when handling their family member. I was mortified because I was never told this. I was very careful in speaking with the family member and never showed any lack of knowledge to the information she disclosed. I am concerned now because who do I go to with this information? I want to speak with my ED of the facility and ask that she inform all the other caregivers of this information. What would you do in my situation? Thank You
  5. I'm not sure where you live exactly , but I just got hired on with Sunrise Senior Living...they have LTC facilities all over the U.S. You will gain valuable work experience...believe me. Tessa~
  6. Hello, I read your post and I totally agree....hahaha. It's definately my evil inner twin that loves this show, and Julian is my favorite. The show last night was a great season opener. Tessa~
  7. Hello, After spending just over a year at Riverside CC, my husband is now having us relocate down to the San Diego area. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about the move but I'm also looking into the schools down there. So far, San Marcos looks like a promising city for us.....Does anyone know about Palomar College?...is it a great school? I saw that they have a nursing program...I just need to transfer all my courses I have taken so far....well if anyone knows about the area...please let me know:) Thank You, Tessa
  8. Are there any people here on this forum that have taken interest into going organic with there food choices? I'm looking to share stories with other people who have taken an active role in eating better nutritionally......I know this will help me in the future with my role as a nurse. I'm thinking of going into nutrition and preventative care nursing. I grew up in a household that ate alot of the wrong foods...hispanic culture. I live a healthy lifestyle now and I'm looking for other people to share words of encouragement and success stories. I have to let you know I am really into this, so I would like to meet other like minded people, if there are any on this website!:) Pre-nursing @ Riverside Community College 3 full semesters in.....possibly 3 more to go before I can apply to nursing program! Yippee currently have a 3.5GPA (thanks):) Tessa~
  9. I meant to say that THERE are suggestions in the article to help wean one off of drugs....with healthy eating. QUOTE=Tessa4RN]Reader's Digest August issue 2005 Article...... Meals that Heal First paragragh quote: "There's a growing awareness that simple choices like what we eat play a powerful role in our health and well being-not only in preventing disease but also in feeeling better and in the quality of life," Says Dr. Dean Ornish President of the Preventive Medicine Research Insititute in Sausalito, California. They also recommend that if you are already taking medications for your ailments, don't stop taking them....but there are some suggestions to help wean you off of drugs........and IN MY opinion help break the cycle of genetic patterns of behavior....like binge eating, alcohol, depression, no exercise. :)

  11. This will be my 3rd full semester into pre-reqs.....Hopefully I will be enrolled in: A&P 1 English 1A Math I wanted to take chemistry, but I needed my math course first, before I could get into Chemistry. Riverside Community College Riverside, CA Tessa Apply for Fall 07 entry. Crossing my fingers
  12. Exactly, I work and go to school as well....but I find time for volunteer work. You can gain knowledge and personal experience from being exposed to all kinds of people. I think it helps you relate to people on a human level...,...something even paid nurses do not even express.
  13. I currentlly do Hospice volunteering for Odyssey Healthcare. They are amazing and are all over the U.S. You may be able to find a facility close to you. Hospice care is not for everyone, but if you have ever experienced the illness and loss of someone ( I have, both my parents by the time I was 27) then you will understand the true nature and importance of hospice care. I currently have two families I visit a couple times a month. I love it and am considering continuing in the hospice care once I become an RN. Tessa~
  14. Exactly, my point....they are just following patterns/environment of behaviors. Like I said before....this is my opinion and people should open their minds to new ways of thinking. I'm looking at all my resources and I won't have someone tell me that this is the only way....I'm sticking to good old nutrition as a way of helping alleviate disease and mental diseases. Long term exposure to the wrong elements CAN have an effect....smoking, drinking, stress, wrong diet, environmental toxins, pregnant mother not taking care of herself....being exposed to these elements...all are passed down and copied by infants and children.....a simple drug will not take that away...only mask it. There needs to be a constant self improvement taken by the individuals. Thank you for your time...but I have exhausted my time here.... I will not be responding to any other posts here...so once again thank you and I hope this has given you something to think about. P.S. I have experiences of my own, myself and family.....we did not need drugs. It is all based upon environment and patterns of behavior. If a family has known to have a supposed depressed individual in their family and they have taken drugs to alleviate the pain...then the next and the next generation will do so as well. It needs to stop. Done!
  15. Well quite possibly you had no reactions to your unhealthy eating habits....but what I'm saying is that some people are predisposed to react to certain foods. Maybe you were the chosen one and nothing happened to you. But what I'm saying is that there are alot of people who can alter their mental states and moods by just changing their diet and adding exercise...something most people do not even consider. Trust me the individual I know, knows a whole lot more than you or I know.....I hope you can open your mind to new information instead of everything that is being presented to us as far as prescription drugs. Besides, of course anyone who has a depressed family member or bipolar, schizo in their family is only following in the patterns of behavior, not genetic makeup. Thanks for letting ME express my opinion. Tessa:rolleyes:
  16. sorry for all the spelling errors! I was typing fast. Tessa
  17. Okay, here is my reply.....I don't fully agree with TC making his opinion public, but ML forced him to give his views on mental illness, so that is what we all got. Anyway, I am doing volunteer work for a family right now, and I have the pleasure of visiting with one of the family members. This family member I visit with is working towards her Doctorate in nutrition. She is VERY well schooled in the knowledge of nutrition. She offers me information that is very helpful in my understanding of illness, depression and overall health. I just finished reading a book by Dr Null, entitled "Food, Mood, Body Connection" It explains the symptoms that people have based upon the foods that they eat. This author also denounces psychiatric drugs as well. So TC is not alone. It got me thinking about how everyone just wants a simple fix to their mental illness while they continue to eat fast food, drink Starbucks daily and surround themselves in stressful situations daily......it all seems to make sense to me and I'm not a scientologist or aspire to be one. What I'm saying is that people today don't try to take an active role in their mental health. You can rid yourself of the viscious cycle of mental disease. I beleive that. Just try for one day ....monitor what you eat and how it makes you feel. Most people are overweight, do not get exercise, never eat the daily nutritional fruits and vegatables.....they expect that because they are sick on carbs, sugar, caffeine, stress...that this is all normal.....they can simple take a drug and it will all go away. People really need to start looking at their diets....and not quick fad diets but nutritioanl ones to help control their diseases and mental illness. That is my opinion and I'm standing by it.
  18. Oh, those were my grades I have received so far. I listed them before I listed the professor's name....if you were wondering. Tessa~:)

  20. Hi Missy, I'm 34, married (Sept. 8, 2001) , no kids yet. I am in the same boat as you. I have been going to school now for almost a year. I have 1 more year left before I can apply to nursing program. It has been a huge sacrifice to not be able to go out to dinner every weekend. Buy shoes and new purses, which I love. Ummmmm lets see, major issue is to not be able to go on mini two day get away vacations my husband I use to like to do. You just have to set your mind towards your goal. I'm sure your husband and you have talked it over. Make sure you make him and your school your top priority. NEVER make your husband feel bad. Make sure his needs are met as well as yours. If you complain about not having the money because you are in school, it will be horrible. You'll find that the little things mean the most, not the material things. We still have dinners, we just make them at home. They are much healthier anyway. We rent movies maybe once a month. Luckily our relationship is a strong one, so the material things are not missed as much. We always knew that my money was the play money anyway. We still have extra each month, we just don't waste it any longer. You will be fine, just be thankful you don't have children yet. That would be a huge sacrifice. Besides this is only a minor step back. Trust me you will enjoy it after you are all done. I know I will.:) Tessa~
  21. HAHHAHAA Yes I am super human, Super Caring that is. Yes, I don't know you and you don't know me. But I am tired of the RNS who truly don't like what they are doing. It is rather obvious and sad. I guess my years as a pyschology major helped me understand people much better than the average. But I will not dicredit my talent and abilities. I WILL make a great RN. I have a heart of gold and tough skin HONEY. So you don't scare me with your silly post. I guess I let this silly thread get under my skin. I will stay away now from the useless gossip that will never amount to much in my life....so thanks for letting me see that side. :) I'm learning about nursing everyday...this is the side I hate. SUPER HUMAN TESSA~
  22. I'm a pre-nursing student , but my biggest pet peeve is listening to RNs $*^#@ about their jobs! If you don't like listening to families or providing a compassionate service that you are trained to do, then do something else. I am an intelligent woman who is working towards my degree in nursing. I'm currently doing volunteer work and loving it. But, I can honestly say I have encountered people who need a reality check themselves. They have bad attitudes and it is a shame they are RNs. You should all be ashamed of talking bad about families and patients. Until you have experienced grief first hand, you have no business &*%^&$! I chose to go into nursing because I lost both my parents by the time I was 27. My dad to a serious car accident and my mom to breast cancer. I saw both extremes of death and illness. I appreciate all the loving doctors and RNs that helped my mom and I was inspired by them. I am mortified to hear that there are RNs out there that hate and despise assisting people. I've worked over 16 years in the Customer Service world so I have seen every wretched human being as much as anyone else has, BUT I have a great outlook on life and I treat people fairly. I will make a great RN one day. I only wish those of you that hate your job so much, do something else! Tessa~
  23. Well, yesterday I met with the first patient that I will be assisting. I am volunteering for Odyssey Healthcare, they are a nationwide Hospice organization. It is amazing to have the opportunity to volunteer for this company. Hospice is so very important. I remember when my mom was dying from breast cancer, the last week that she was alive, our family was offered Hospice care. At the time, 6 years ago, I was unaware of what Hospice offers. They offer emotional support as well as 24/7 care from doctors and nurses. Yestereday I met with the patient and his wife. They are such amazing people and I was blessed that they allowed me to listen and offer my compassion towards them. I will be meeting with them once a week for the next month or so. Yes, well I volunteer for this organization, I may see people pass on. I lost both my parents by the time I was 27 so this will not be a schock to me. I'm glad I am able to offer the familiy my support. The only thing that I will say that irritated me a bit was when the RN came in and found out how I had been visiting with the family and offering my support, He (yes male RN) found out I was a pre-nursing student and looked me straight in the eye and said " I hope you like what you are getting yourself into, So many of my friends didn't and they are not happy." I wish that male RN knew what motivates me and how compassionate a person I am. I feel sorry that HE gets irritated with his job. URRRGGG! Are most RN"s like this? Anyway I love my new endeavor. :) P.S. On thurs the company goes over charts of patients and I was able to sit in and listen. It was an hour and a half of very useful information. There were 2 doctors and three RN's plus 2 social workers and home health aids there. I can tell you it was a wealth of information to listen to. The experience is wonderful. Thanks for reading! Tessa~ Riverside Community College, Riverside CA Pre-nursing student
  24. Hi Katie, Yeah :) , another person who is actually doing something. I read so many posts here, but no one is doing anything towards their goal. I mean EVERYONE here, is in school pt or ft, but I think it is great that their are people like us who are willing to volunteer our time to actually gain some knowledge as to what will be expected of us.I work 30 hrs plus I am taking 3 classes. I just went to part of my training today. Yes I will have to take a TB test and a Hepatitis B test, all which is provided. I'm looking forward to my new adventure. Good Luck to you! I'm sure nursing will be a good choice for you! Tessa~
  25. Wow, your experience in a hospital setting is great. I'm looking forward to my volunteering. At least I'll feel as though I am moving towards my goal instead of just waiting while I take my pre-reqs. Thanks for the kind words! Good Luck to you! Tessa~:)
