Update: they offered me days and I left in a heartbeat buttttt I would now never suggest working in AL without at least a year under your belt. You won't gain any skills!!

I work in both. SNF as my full daytime job and ALF PRN. Let me tell you that ALF is a cake walk compared to my other job. Basically it's a huge med pass. Maybe my building actually adheres to ALF standards. We do have 2 total assist but even they are pleasant. Honestly if they ever offer me day shift here I'd leave my other job in a heartbeat. Idk why everyone else has all these complicated cases that ridiculous! My patients are not like that. The most complicated ones have some type of dementia and its a lot of baby sitting with them. Otherwise ALF is easy for me, at least compared to SNF. With the right crew you'll have a smooth shift. That's anywhere though. Best of luck!!

Most of us go through this. My problem was that I was too friendly and stuff wasn't getting done. I got a good "talking to". My DON is super supportive and basically told me if they weren't listening to send them home. Once I "put my foot down" I was hated for a good month before they adjusted to the "new" me. Thank goodness I have a fantastic and open relationship with my DON. I can come to her with anything. Now I don't have too many problems. Sometimes its just their personality. You'll learn that you can't please everyone and you have to be okay with that. It'll be completing a year with my license in Oct and I barely feel like I got enough skills to back up my assertiveness. For now keep your head down and just learn the work. The day will come when you're in charge :)

I worked with older "old" nurses. One nurse was a midnight nurse and was recently fired, she just couldn't "keep" up. Med pass would run a hour into the next shifts, treatments wouldn't be done etc. The other one is on thin ice. They've even stated themselves they just "forget" stuff now. It's hard on their bodies. Their knees, back, joints hurt. Both gals are over 60 years old. I feel personally that maybe at that age with those forgetful problems, you should quit. Any nurse who can't perform their job anymore for whatever reason should resign.

I was on evening shift for the longest so I had a bad habit to break once I finall went into days. I have to get up a little earlier too because I work 30+min away. Honestly for me going to bed early is the only thing that worked. It's been 4 weeks and I've finally trained my body to get sleepy around 10 so I can lay down and sleep like 11.

Well I friend requested my buildings executive administer and they've "liked" some of my pictures lol Granted I'm a Christian so my profile reflects that. Regardless be careful what you post and who you add.

Take some basic gen ed's, do a CNA course, become a HHA, take some courses and get certified in anything they'd let you do like phlebotomy. If worst comes to worst go on Care.com and work as someones caregiver, it'll help.

OP refer to company policy or ask some colleagues during orientation.

Sometimes you get LUCKY. I've been a nurse for only 9 months only and have a day shift due to luck and me letting my DON and administrator know I wanted days enough lol. This is what happened, I quit the job I was working evenings at for a different job offering 12's from 7p-7a. My old job loved me and knew I wanted days but couldn't give me them since they were fully staffed. I had no hope and evenings were taking over my life, plus when you get mandated you have to work until 7 am !! Well just this Friday my old job called me back and offered me a days position starting in two days!!! Theres a nurse leaving who's been there forever. I was like OMG YESSS GIMMIE. So I'm working doubles at my new job for two weeks. I was NOT going to pass up this RARE opportunity lol Btw I work in LTC. Work hard and let the right people know what you want and you might just get lucky too

I'm scare of this too. I'm 23 but I graduated when I was 21 and one of the things I always heard from my teachers and older cnas in school with me was how I wasn't going to be taken seriously or respected. I'm not working yet but I'm older although I look young. I hope I don't let it get to me as much plus these people are right they're just looking out for themselves making sure the jobs done. Grow a thicker skin and if you still feel inferior maybe it's you and not them. Go with a positive attitude you know you're doing your job right and you always answer them with "yes it's done" so just take it with a grain of salt. Soon you'll be old like them. Lol no but seriously older people have more experience than us whether we like it or not. Not always fair but we'll be there one day.

I can't do smells and if it really gross and I have to touch it. I'm just grateful I have gloves on lol I breathe through my mouth and think happy thoughts when cleaning s**t or other bodily fluids. At the end of the day the patients probably more uncomfortable than you.

I have a criminal history (driving with no license and arrests) and had to appear before my state committee to even take my boards. I wasn't the only one and the process is nerve wracking. There were a bunch of nurses there for various reasons. There was a younger chick who got caught drinking and the courts made her take rehab classes or whatever and the committee let her renew her license. I'm in Indiana and they seemed pretty lenient in my eyes not what I was expecting. But who knows maybe you'll get a ****** board member. As long as you didn't get fired for being high while on the job you should be okay. You most likely will be reprimanded and have to appear before your state committee. I don't even have my license yet and got put on 6 months probation. So something will probably happen and it might be more difficult to find a job. Like the board member told me "difficult but not impossible". **** happens :/
