yes! i don't notice when i bite my nails too. you know, i might just go ahead and try that. i remember my parents trying to make me do it but i think i've been traumatized all these years i blocked it out. when i think about psychology though (you know all those conditioning experiments), i think maybe it would work! do you just buy those at the drug store?

yeah i cannot imagine biting my nails at a hospital-- that blood on nails story almost made me barf! i mostly bite during studying, in the car, etc...i guess places i am stressed. hmmm, that's a clue i guess

So, I know that nail biting doesn't really go with nursing. I will be starting my first year this fall and have been biting my nails since I was a 1st grader (I am in my early 30s now). I have stopped for short periods of time...especially when I was taking Microbiology! But now I REALLY have to stop. Anybody out there successfully stop biting your nails? How did you do it? Any tips would help... thanks!

i haven't worked at either, so i can't help you with that but i have been a patient at both and alta bates is far superior in my experience.

I just posted elsewhere asking a similar question but feel stuck. I am doing pre-reqs for BSN but when I found out about a Master's Entry program in my area (which is three years: first year to get the RN license and two years for specialty), I got excited. I would be in school the same amount of time (I already have a bachelor's in an unrelated field), though it would cost more. The thing that appeals to me is a specialty called "Advanced Community Health and International Nursing". It's exactly what I am interested in. But can I still get direct care work with a MSN or would I be 'overqualified'?

i just wonder what kind of support nurses of color have around these issues? as a person of african descent (by the way, using the term american only doesn't work for some folks because they are not seen as equal b/c of their skin so no use in pretending. racism is still very alive. it's also about honoring our roots. ESP if you were stolen and enslaved, it makes it more important), it's very traumatizing to experience racism so blatant. how supportive are nurses of each other if the adminstration doesn't provide it? i am a nursing student and think about these issues often...

(just a note about me: I am just starting my pre-reqs at a community college, going back to school to get a second bachelor's, the first was in women studies which i loved but couldn't do much with. after many paths, finally figured out what i really want to do!) i have been a grassroots community organizer for 15 years and would like to merge my nursing with organizing. i am particularly interested in care access, etc in communities of color. are there any organizations that focus on these issues from the perspective of understanding the systems of oppression (racism, classism, heterosexism, etc)? i am in northern california but even here haven't had much luck finding groups. any ideas? i am also looking for nursing publications that are progressive and see things through the aforementioned lens. thanks so much! jan
