Relocating to Raleigh- questions
I can guarantee you will not be making $37/hr as staff at Duke. Perhaps close to that as a supplemental position (if you don't need benefits). You may want to look at WakeMed. You probably still won't make that as staff - possible as supplemental. Good luck.

I don't think I'm ready yet.
I'm amazed that any acute care area like the ICU or ED would give a new grad only 7 wks of orientation. Coming out of nursing school I went straight to the ED but I got a total of 16wks of orientation before being on my own. If you feel that you're not ready then stay on orientation. You're better off doing that and getting more experience under your belt with a preceptor to oversee you then taking on too much while you're still unsure and risk the possibility of making a serious error. Of course, this is all your choice but it seems to me that if you feel that you're not ready then you should remember that it's YOUR nursing license on the line. Not anyone else's. Good luck to you!

BSN no RN license yet
Doesn't a greencard automatically give you permission to work in the US?????

BSN no RN license yet
Why is the BON not willing to issue a license? You have a degree. Passed the NCLEX. Have a GC. What's missing?

NEW GRADS: ATTs received yet??
Did you opt to receive notifications by email? B/c, truly, ATT notification by email is infinitely faster than mail.
-
NEW GRADS: ATTs received yet??
Congrats to you! I would not have suggested you use quick results if I wasn't sure that you could get them in 48 hours. Everyone I know who tested and was licensed through NC could get their results in 48 hours whether it was the weekend or not.

NEW GRADS: ATTs received yet??
Why do that? You can pay to get quick results and they should be available 48 hours after you test so technically you should have results on the 9th. Good luck to you!

Visa Screen
Perhaps what this person has is a temporary license and not a full one? I know I crossed the border with a temp license from the NC BON although I did have all the appropriate paperwork like the VSC, diplomas, offer of employment etc. etc. etc.

Visa Screen Certificate / CGFNS
Sorry...I don't know all of the particular details. All I know is that she recently graduated from nursing school. She does not have a job lined up yet. She is planning to take the NCLEX in July or August. I'm assuming here that she applied for OPT while she was still in school? Does this mean that her OPT time is already counting down? Anyhow, that's all I know. It doesn't sound good.
-
Visa Screen Certificate / CGFNS
She is just starting so I'm assuming her OPT will not begin until she actually passes the NCLEX and starts working....so probably sometime in July/August. Is it remotely possible she might get a GC before the OPT expires? I think not but I guess you never know. I would not want to be in her situation.

Visa Screen Certificate / CGFNS
Thanks Suzanne, I did think that my friend's situation is not a good one to be in. For me I am eligible for a TN so I'm doing that until it is possible for me to go to a GC. I think my friend has not fully investigated her circumstances and is probably going to get screwed royally if she does not do her homework more carefully.

Visa Screen Certificate / CGFNS
Thanks Silverdragon :) I was asking out of curiosity as there's a person I know who seems to think that her OPT means she does not need a VisaScreen. Her intent is to get a greencard however I think she does not realize that it is highly unlikely that she will get one before her OPT expires and also unlikely that she will be able to obtain an H1 before then, correct? I'm thinking this is not a good situation for this person to be in right now.

Visa Screen Certificate / CGFNS
Hey all, I didn't read through this whole thread so perhaps this question is redundant but I'm wondering... If a person is currently an F1 and is using OPT to work. Do they still need to get the CGFNS VisaScreen? Thanks :) -Yee

How long to get NCLEX results in WV?
Well, apparently it takes less than 24 hours to get "results". I took the test at 9am yesterday morning and, for kicks, checked the online license verification page at 8pm last night and it was already updated. How crazy is that? But I'm thankful b/c now I won't spend all weekend stressing :) Have a great weekend all! -Yee

NCLEX tomorrow- freaking out a bit
Good luck everyone! I was scheduled for the 17th but opted to change it to tomorrow so I'm now in the same boat. Got a few butterflies floating around but I have faith that nursing school has prepared me well and so long as I stay focused it will all be good. Stay tuned! -Yee

Authorization to test
Don't know where everyone is located but I graduated Dec. 15th and got my ATT today via email from Pearson-Vue. First available test date for my local testing center is the 17th so that's when I'm taking it. Yikes. -Yee

Duke University Medical Center
I think you're going to find that throughout all of Duke Health the salaries will be the same. I heard about the $0.50 raise from Durham Reg. since that's where I go to school so they aren't any different. I think the reason for the "lower" salaries at these two big health centers is that they know people want to work there for the reputation and therefore can opt to pay less and still have nurses clamoring to work there. Just my $0.02. Cheers. -Yee

Duke University Medical Center
What are other hospitals in the area paying?? From what I understand there's a raise coming but to the tune of something like $0.50. I believe that brings the new grad starting salary to somewhere between $18-$19. Cheers.

What do ya'll know about Cary?
Well, we folks like to think of it as the "C"ontainment "A"rea for "R"elocated "Y"ankees.....and whaddya know......I'm a Yankee!!! So I suppose it's true -Yee

What do ya'll know about Cary?
Hey Susan, It's pretty crazy. We have a guy who lives down the road from us and he's the local "kook". He probably moved out here when there was nothing but farmland thinking he was getting away from it all and, poor guy, it got all built up around him. Anyhow, he's been here so long that he predates the bylaws and whatnot so his is the only house that's got junk all over the yard and stuff strewn all over.....well, let's say it's not the typical Cary house I LOVE IT!! Dunno if you read in the papers not too long ago....there was a HOA coup it made big news locally...well, it was actually my HOA. I tell ya...these people haven't got anything better to do. Anyhow, we're here for the short-medium term but the moment we can find something outside the city limits we're going for it!! -Yee

What do ya'll know about Cary?
Hi Abby, I live in Cary and it's nice enough. Expensive and even more expensive depending on where you are. They're building new townhomes up the street and those start in the $300,000 range. Don't know about you but that's ridiculous to me. Average price of a starter home in the area is probably in the $250-300K range. Do you love homeowners associations or playing keep up with the Joneses? If you do you'll love Cary! Here, from what I understand, they told the Red Roof Inn that they couldn't build one with a red roof because it went against the zoning bylaws. They even paint manhole covers green to match the grass. Not to say it isn't a good place to live - great schools if you have kids yadda yadda yadda but if you want to live in a town with a little more personality you might look elsewhere :) Taxes are slightly higher in Cary compared to surrounding towns to cover the cost of painting those manhole covers. It's like Pleasantville on steroids. I think if we'd have known then what we know now we might have picked another location. Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions -Yee
