Good afternoon all! I've been an ER nurse for 3 years now, have worked in several ER's and most recently moved to an ER that receives trauma. Last case was a 1 year old that had her head run over by a car. Basilar skull fracture, depressed occipital fracture was seen on the CT. When she arrived we moved quickly to intubate. My doc order succhs, etomidate and atropine for induction. I've found conflicting literature online about use of atropine to combat bradycardia from vagal stimulation in peds. Curious as to what others experiences are. Do your docs use it? Thanks in advance for your time and any peds trauma tips are welcome as this is a whole new world for me. TNCC helps, but reality is scary!

I'm an ER Navy nurse. Yes, some of our acuity is lower than the civilian side, but remember we also take care of retirees

I'm Navy, we work 84 hours every 2 weeks. 14 shifts a month and then your collaterals on top of that. A sample rotation is work Mon/Tues, off Wed/Thur work Fri-Sun, off Mon-Tues, work Wed/Thur off Fri-Sun. This is pretty standard in the Navy.

Mark Boswell has some good stuff too. I took the practice tests and then watched his YouTube videos of the content where my holes were. I also liked his page on Facebook and he does review questions on there with rationale. Sheey's is my bible as well, used it before CEN and after, great resource for any ER nurse.

They may still take you, but not as a nurse, you must have a license.

So as I'm nearing my Date for ODS, I have a random question...the ODS website says to check in wearing "appropriate clothing." Would it be acceptable to wear comfortable travel clothing and flip flops or are they already picky about that stuff at check in?

I just got my official orders and got 8 JUL class, I took NCLEX on the 23rd of May. Detailer didn't say anything about it being full, but you never know!

Hi kdarkes36- No news yet. I graduated May 5th, I took NCLEX this last week and my license went active on Friday, so I'm hoping for information this week. They cannot release orders until you pass NCLEX, so I'll keep you posted on how my week goes! Anyone else hear any news?

Hi willhigg6- I too am in the NCP and just got my duty assignment around a month ago. I graduate in 2 weeks. Most of us found that the "Big Three" were not available. I am going to Camp Pendleton and I know others all had the Big Three listed and didn't get them other. Just wanted you to keep your mind open to the possibility that you won't be stationed there. It's wherever is available when you are ready to go in! Hope that helps some!

Does anyone know if "time in service" includes time spent in NCP? I was just curious if I will be ENS with 0 time in or with 1 year since I signed my contract? Didn't know how it worked since I"m considered "Reserves." Thanks for the help! Love this forum, on my countdown!

GuelnRn- I can answer one question, having just gone through the process myself. When it was time for me to talk with my detailer and get my orders it went like this: I called him and sent him emails for a week He finally called back, he's a very busy man, super nice though When he called me, he was pulling up my duty preference sheet and I had listed 1. San Diego, 2. Portsmouth and 3. Bethesda, he said the only openings he had were in Portsmouth but if I was interested in staying on the West coast, he had Camp Pendleton available. He could only send me where there were openings, but was pretty flexible about where I could go. I chose Camp Pendleton and will be going to ODS this summer! Hope that helps!

I graduate 5 May and am hoping for L&D, wanting to get my NP in Women's Health eventually. I did my practicum in the ED and LOVED it, I just have a few weeks of exams left and I'm finally free! Sent in my app for my RN license today!

Hi AG_RN! I'm a NCP'er too! Just got my duty station of Camp Pendleton, mainly because I wanted to stay on the West coast, not really familiar with the East Coast way of life! When do you graduate? What specialty are you hoping to go into?

Do a search on this website for NCP, there is a ton of info here, and most importantly, find a healthcare recruiter, not an enlisted recruiter to talk to. They can give you the most accurate and up to date info. If you google Nurse Candidate Program you will also be lead to the Navy's website.

Interview tips: Just be relaxed, ask questions, this is your chance to interview them as well. MEPS physical: Pretty low key, they weigh you, take some blood, have you strip down to your undies and do some exercises together in a group to check your range of motion. A "peek" to see that you are the sex that you say you are. A urine test, hearing test, a vision test and a lot of waiting around for certification that you're fit for duty! At my MEPS station I got a special name tag that said I was an Officer Candidate and so I got to go to the front of the line everywhere...didn't take long for the rest of the people to get sick of that and stop talking to me!

HI Alkali! I'm headed to Camp Pendleton as well!! What is your tentative ODS date? I had San Diego on mine, and was offered Camp Pendleton and took it to stay West Coast. Do you have a family? You can PM me if you want! Glad there is someone else going there too! What's your grad date?

I just found out I'm getting stationed at Camp Pendleton, anyone know anything about that place? Still excited, just digesting the news!

Hi navynursegirl! Welcome to allnurses. Are you in the NCP? I am a May 2012 grad for NCP. Congrats on getting orders, still waiting for mine. Unfortunately I don't have any info for you, but good luck! Just wanting to encourage you!

You have to be in NCP at least 12 months before graduation. You have time! Relax and have a deep breath! I grad May 2012 and got into NCP in April of 2011, so I made it with one month to spare. Good luck!

VentcSN- No worries about informing them, I have already been working for the company. They know all about the NCP, they are just grateful to have me for any amount of time that they can. I just don't want to work if I'm going to be leaving 2 months after graduation...it looks like it's taking a little longer for everyone to get out of town and head to ODS! Just want to be productive during my wait! Looking forward to hopefully hearing soon where I'll be going. VentcSN & deftonez188 do either of you have children? I have San Diego as my first choice, Bethesda is my third, but kind of scared about moving there with my three kids! Thanks for all the info!

VentcSN- I'm in NCP, graduate May 2012, hoping to take NCLEX in June. I have an interview for a civilian position next week. If I don't leave for 6 months, I've got to work somewhere!! We don't have to "inform" them that we're working, do we? As long as we don't sign a contract we can do whatever we want I thought! Anyways, good luck, thanks for all your info. Deftonez188-When do you graduate? Are you going to ODS pretty quickly after your graduation? I have a feeling that summer ODS dates fill up rather quickly, so I don't know how big of chance I'll have to go in July...
