how hard really is School and Work ?
I have kids that want to eat, too, so quitting wasn't an option. I have better benefits, so it works out for me to be full time. I read a lot of posts before starting ns last semester, and dropped down to about 20 hours at work because I didn't think I'd be able to work ft and pull decent grades. I think working moms learn to be good at time management. My husband is super supportive, and my mom lives w/ us, so I have the "team" in place. By the end of my first semester, I went back full time, mostly just for the benefits...but I was also a little bored. I pulled an A in one class, an "almost A" (89%), in my second class, and my clinical instructors had good things to say. So...it depends on your situation, but it's totally possible. One thing I did that helped a ton- I hired a housekeeper to come in every other Monday. We didn't keep the house as clean as I'd like it during the semester, but it didn't totally fall apart, either. I didn't want to worry about scrubbing the bathroom when I had a care plan to work on. I hope that helps! And congrats on getting into your program!

A & P Vocab
If there is a specific area that you're having difficulty w/, check out Utube. It's amazing what's on there. I'm fairly certain my biochemistry prof had early onset AD. I pretty much learned everything she forgot to teach us by watching Utube videos. Also, there should be a website associated w/ your textbook that should give you quizzes, etc, to go along w/ the chapters. Hope that helps! Also, I recorded every lecture for physiology and listened to them during my commute. I was one of the few in class that did this and I got A's in all the pre-req's. Good luck!

I don't want to be "clueless" when I hit the floor
Thanks for the suggestion! That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Your friend is really lucky to have that opportunity! :-)

I don't want to be "clueless" when I hit the floor
Thanks! I volunteered as a CCE intern at a local hospital on the Med/Surg floor for a few weeks. What was shocking to me was that the nurses did not sit down unless they were charting. I was only there for four hours and was practically running the whole time- doing vitals, giving baths, changing linens, etc. I cannot imagine that these nurses who are so crazy busy are going to be able to help a "newbie" learn the ropes. So...if I can learn more during school to make myself less of a burden, I'd love to do it!

I don't want to be "clueless" when I hit the floor
Hi everyone! I'm starting nursing school in five weeks, and very excited. In reading a lot of the posts on this forum, it sounds like I'm likely to graduate w/ a lot of knowledge about "nursing theory" and "nursing diagnosis vs medical diagnosis" but will be woefully lacking in the skill set nurses need to actually do the job. BTW, my school is highly respected and has one of the highest NCLEX pass rates in CA, so I'm not bashing my school. I' What can I do during nursing school to make myself more prepared to actually do the job? I'm interested in oncology. Should I volunteer on an oncology floor during school? Can I take CE courses when I'm not even an RN yet? Any info provided would be greatly appreciated!

Riverside Community College Spring 2011
I bought both versions, and I'm going to go w/ the the 2 editions, rather than the one big one. If someone wants to buy the "one volume version" from me, I'll sell it for $95. I'll be losing about $10 this way, but I'm not going to need it. It's brand new and the CD wasn't opened either. I'm not sure if this is allowed on allnurses, so send me a message if you are interested. Thanks! I can bring it to orientation on the 12th.

Riverside Community College Spring 2011
My registration date is February 12. Cutting it a little close. :-) I've never attended a class at RCC... Thank goodness we have our designated spots, or I'd be getting nervous! First book came in the mail. For the person who asked earlier, I ordered everything through eBay and half.com- they had the best deals. I wish the syllabus was posted online so we could get started on the reading!

how to deal with microbiology and human anatomy physiology
Hi! I would recommend recording the lectures. You indicated that you're not great at science. If you're able to listen to the lectures multiple times, it can help the info sink in. Good luck!

Riverside Community College Spring 2011
Hi Natalie! I was hoping you could give us a general idea of what the schedule is like. My employer requires that I work a minimum number of hours per week to keep my position, and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to fit everything in. I added up the total class/lab hours for the first semester, and it looks like we're going to be "doing something" about five hours per day. Does that sound about right? I know that doesn't count studying, just time that we're on campus. Also, it states that we'll have lab first semester, but doesn't say we'll have clinicals. Is that right? Thanks for any info you can provide! Caty

I am dying to find out, too. I called the school and they said it will be "another week or two" before they send out the acceptance emails. I'm sitting at 95 points, but still nervous! Good luck to everyone who has applied!
