Get a job at a reputable hospital in your area in adult med surg, stay for a year and then transfer internally to where you want to go. That's why I am doing. The hardest part in getting a job is just getting your foot in the door. Plus you'll have actual nursing experience and references to back you up when you apply.

HI All, I just wanted to get some advice. I have been working as a nurse for 1 year and 2 months as a adult Neurology med/surg and stepdown RN. This was not my first choice but I couldn't be picky since jobs were limited and I didn't have my BSN yet for 5 more months which is required to work at the Women and Childrens hospital here since they are magnet. Now that I have done a year on my unit I would like to transfer within the same hospital system to the womens hospital and work in either NICU, mother baby or the extended care nursery, but really want NICU. There are job openings for all of them and have applied through our internal job board. But the applications just go through HR and it tells you if your application has been sent onwards. I know my application for NICU And mother baby were sent on but its been over a week and havent had a call yet. I just cannot deal with crazy demented adults anymore. I know who the nursing manager is for the NICU. Would it be inappropriate to contact her via her work email and express my interest? Thanks for any advice.

Hi I am a new nurse with 6 months experience on an Adult Neuromedical/Neurosurgical unit, I really wanted to do Peds straight out of school but there were no jobs available. My unit is great and all but its not where I want to be and the hospital has recently cut the differential pay in half and has been cutting hours. I cant survive on 24 hrs a week. I want to jump ship....but with only 6 months experience I am not considered a new grad anymore and not a full nurse yet... should I stick it out for year and then try to switch areas? Those who previously had adult experience did you find it hard to switch over to peds? Thanks!

I am using the thinklabs electronic stethoscope. I can hear fine with it without my hearing aids. but recently i got new hearing aids, the oticon chili and got the streamer that wirelessly transmits phone calls, music etc to ur aids. I love it and the think labs has a connection port where u can plug the streamer into it so now I dont have to take out my hearing aids and I love it!

I am HOH and use a streamer to connect devices wirelessly to my hearing aids. But I use a thinklabs steth that i plug into the streamer which then transmits to aids. If ur not deaf then I dunno if technology has progressed that far yet.

For my deaf/HOH peeps out there....just wanted to let you all know you can do it. I am currently going through orientation as a GN on a neuroscience/neurology floor. I am profoundly deaf and wear Oticon Chilis and use the oticon streamer for the phone. I use a thinklabs amplified stethoscope. I think I am going to do great as a GN. Only issue I worry about is communication on the phone with the Dr but I will get over it. Just be confident in yourself and get it done!

I interviewed on a Neuro Unit last month and got the job as a GN The questions were pretty basic: tell me about a time when you went above and beyond for a patient tell me about the most critical patient you have had, what was the condition and what did you focus on tell me about a time you had conflict with another team member, how did you resolve it they did emphasize that the patients can be difficult since you're treating the brain thats been injured in MVA, brain tumor, etc. families can be difficult because they are not used to seeing their loved ones that way. I would come up with some ideas on how you would deal with this. I emphasized on maintaining open lines of communication, whether the patient write on a dry erase board or use a computer if needed if they have aphasia. I start April first...so excited!

Im in same boat....I graduated with asn from Seminole state and I am three months from getting my BSN at UCF. I work as a tech at ORMC and no luck finding a job. ORMC isn't really hiring GNS, got into florida hospital gn program to interview for one position and didnt get it with more than a year of experience as a tech. Seems like actual hospital experience doesnt seem to matter. So I am branching out to the east coast. Might have to drive quite a distance for a year or two to accumulate experience. Plus it doesnt help that the hospitals I the area seem to be very cliquey. Its all about who you know.

I think everyone I've talked to said general peds which is why I thought it was weird I got the one department. Don't know of anyone interviewing for NICU at the moment. But its another week before the interview day, so if I hear anything will post. LOL its fine with the questions...I'm obsessing a bit at the moment as well...reading up on peds oncology from my nursing school books since I heard that Florida Hospital interviews can be tough, a friend said they really drilled her but she was interviewing for an adult position.

Mine is Jan 14th as well for peds oncology. Its weird that HR said my interview was for a specific dept where other people I've talked to said their interview was for all the depts (gen peds). So I dunno.. The recruiter via email said that they still had openings for peds and nicu and that mother/baby and ED were no longer looking for GN's. Anyways Good Luck!

I just got a phone interview this past Thursday from Florida Hospital, and got thru that, did the questionaire and references thing then the next day got a call for a interview for peds oncology at Florida Hospital Disney Pavilion in a week. But I applied for the GN Program at the end of November and it took over a month for HR to call me.. So fingers crossed..

Hi All, I am going to be interviewing at Florida Hospital Disney Pavilion in Orlando for a Peds and/or NICU position. I really want either position. The thing is that its a mass interview situation where they interview a bunch of candidates on one day. Any tips on how I can make myself stand out more? I already work as a floating pool patient care tech for the past year at Orlando Regional Medical Center which is a level one trauma center and I have worked all the floors there from oncology, to ortho, to ICU, to med/surg as a tech. I did my practicum at a pediatric hospital, Arnold Palmer. I am going for my BSN which I will have in May. I already interviewed at Arnold Palmer for a peds job but got passed over for a nurse who already had her BSN. I am also hard of hearing with hearing aids which isnt an issue, I use an amplified stethoscope and hear fine on the phone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I do not know many ICU's that hire new grads, plus it would be really stressful as a new grad to go to such a high level of care floor after graduation. I would try to get practicum on a acute care floor or med surg in an area that you want to work in. I want to work in peds so I did my practicum on a pediatric acute care floor. Word of advice try to meet the nurse manager for the floor you do your practicum on, she will be your contact to get a job. I emailed with the nurse manager of my peds floor and she emailed me when a job opened up so that I could apply for it and she could pull my application. I have an interview with her on Monday...yay! I am profoundly deaf and use bilateral BTE's, I wish I could get the scope where you can sync your hearing aid to it, but until then I use the regular e-scope but have to take my hearing aids out. I tried with the head phones and just found it to be a pain, the silhouettes work great but are expensive and break easily. Also be careful with the e-scope, it can break easily, I have 2 and the other one is making a buzzing noise so have to mail it in to get fixed. you just have to practice, practice, and practice, use the open lab hours to practice on the dummy and do searches on the internet for sound clips of the things u need to learn I found that if I listen to the sound clips over and over, I learn what to listen for I graduate from nursing school in October and I am starting my practicum on Sept 1st on a acute care floor. But my school didnt really focus on sounds too much other than using a manual blood pressure cuff with stethoscope. I took everyones blood pressure lol. So we can do it!

Hi I am profoundly deaf but wear BTE hearing aids in both ears and communicate via speech and lipread, I dont know any sign language other than the basics. I am almost done with nursing school om Orlando, FL and, I graduate in October 2012. I use a amplified stethoscope. I am starting my practicum on Sept 1st on a acute care pediatrics unit, I really want to work in Peds. My dream job is Pediatrics ER. I had a question for those HOH nurses out there- how do you communicate with the doctor over the phone? I can use a phone fine and hear fine on the phone its just a matter of comprehension since the majority of my communication is lipreading. That is my only concern. I have Captel on my cell phone which I use sometimes but its not very reliable and has a huge lag. Should I just tell the doctors to be patient with me and just make sure to repeat back everything? Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated

Got my zip up top from meridys Friday and it fits but kinda hard getting in it since it doesn't stretch goin over the head I wonder what we have to wear these for? I could get away w it over a tank but I dunno bout much else. I really don't want to do hassle of returning it Site rec xxs but got an xs.....I would rec everybody get smalls.. Anybody want to trade a small for xs? For books if u order from barnes n noble thru the ebates.com site they give u 8% cash back... I finished out my last semester w straight A's in chemistry and intro to healthcare...glad it's over Let's hope I do as good in nursing..

I finished all paperwork yay Man tallied up the books for both programs...used amazon.com 8 books total including the super exp package one was a grand total of 547.47 yikes! It says the package one won't be delivered till Jan 10 to 12th..hmm Anyways looking forward to orientation next week

Hey All Spent the weekend sore from all my shots lol...I had a localized vaccine reaction to the tetorifice which was fun. got the hep b shot, tetorifice shot and tb test done last friday and had my varicella titer and drug test done at quest that saturday...had the dr throw in a cbc/chem/t4 lol mights well. went to uniformity today after work. i am 5'7 130 lbs and got the small in the loose fit pants, i didnt like how the classic fit tapered at the ankles so ordered 2 of those and a jacket in a medium since the small was tight around the back. also got medium polos the small fit fine but was too short hard to tuck in. btw uniformity is the same place that u are ordering ur polos from so u dont have to wait till orientation to get them. She had mediums in stock and gave me 2 on the spot, i just had to order the pants and the jacket. anyone one know what the zip up scrub top is for? clinicals? I really wish I didnt have to order it..ugh anyways the site says to order a xxs but i am going for the xs to factor in shrinkage.. man nursing school is adding up and havent even started yet lol, between all the checks (bckgd, finger, drug), dr visits and uniform costs...whew good thing my sister decided not to go to nursing school and gave me her electronic stethoscope. I have to use a modified version since I am hard of hearing and wear hearing aids. fun stuff! Headed for fingerprinting at 9 am tomorrow!

Hi All God we have so much to do ... I finished background check, will be fingerprinted on tuesday at 9 am going to Dr today to get all shots Got a flu shot at walgreens for free, insurance covered it. still have to get tetorifice, hep b and a titer varicella test done. have to ask about the fit test. still have to order uniforms..waiting to get paid since they are so expensive. i want to order 2 sets. i already turned in my acceptance forms. taking drug test tomorrow morning. wow ... did anybody go to a regular dr with their insurance for vax? did ur insurance cover it? cant wait till orientation on dec 9th but man its gonna be a long day.

Hey! I got into the Evening Seminole State Track as well and the Ucf Concurrent program. So excited and nervous! I am hoping to try to work some while taking classes.
