  1. One of my family members is being treated at Parkland. Another family member (also a nurse) was there with her and found that the other patient in the room (it was a semi-private room) had her IV lines hanging down onto the floor. When she asked the charge nurse to prevent the IV lines from dragging on the floor (for infection control obviously), the charge nurse informed her that it was OK for the lines to drag on the floor and refused to adjust them. Is this the type of nursing that I should expect at Parkland? Does Parkland have any sort of nursing practice guidelines that conflict with this?
  2. Anyone get a packet in the mail yet? I figure we will need to start getting the CPR, immunizations, etc, etc tackled pretty quickly since we start in May?
  3. Go check your email, they are sending out financial aid
  4. :) worth the wait! Congrats!
  5. Kayce - not everyone who was admitted to the Spring 2011 class found out on the same day. It seems like UTLink was updated in waves... so, keep checking! It might be tomorrow before your status changes, but having more holds is a great sign!
  6. Thanks Brandig07! - I just talked to the school. I got into the accelerated May program! My status says accepted for "BSN IN GENERIC NURSING" for the Summer 2011 term, but it is for the accelerated May program!
  7. Thanks Brandig07! That's interesting - I knew that MOST of the classes were now in-person (just like the Generic program), but I too thought that at least a couple of the classes were online. I applied to the accelerated program, but I checked the "please consider me for the fall program if I don't get into accelerated" option. But it sounds like my acceptance is for accelerated!
  8. crr1987 - Congrats! Does your UTlink say "Accelerated" program on the acceptance page?
  9. I see that same admissions information for both the "Summer 2011" and the "Fall 2011" drop down on the Admissions page.
  10. me too! it says this... BSN IN GENERIC NURSING You have been granted provisional admission. Admission letter in the mail. It definitely said Accelerated BSN in Nursing last night. Does this mean I'm in the Fall class or the May class?
  11. Hopefully we will know more tomorrow. Last semester many people saw their holds change the day before their admissions status did!
  12. Here's what mine say now.... Criminal Background Check Current CPR card hold Admission documents Immunizations Residency Form Hold
  13. I haven't heard anything yet
  14. My holds have changed as well, but my status still says pending. Still waiting for the status to update...
  15. Anyone have any information on how new grads from UT are faring with finding jobs in the med center after graduation? Specifically in the ICUs and ERs?
  16. Does anyone know when we will find out about financial aid? Are they going to send out emails soon?
  17. Thanks carbon, good luck to you too! Brandig07 - that is the highest critical thinking score I've seen posted. You should feel very good about your stats. I think a lot of people have been scoring in the high 800s for critical thinking. From what I've read, it seems like everyone is pretty much on equal ground once you get into the interview phase, so even though some people feel like their stats aren't as high, I really don't think anyone should worry. Of course, that does add some additional pressure to do well in the interview :-)
  18. I hope you're right carbon_13. I didn't realize this year's interviewing had started late. Hopefully UTLink will be up before April 15th!
  19. April 15th? Are you sure? I was hoping/assuming we would know much sooner than that for accelerated. That is only 6 weeks before the program starts! That really worries me. It will take me at least 4 weeks to transition out of my current job, plus I will need to move to Houston.
  20. -asian- and reachin$thestars sound like they have more up-to-date (and more accurate) info than I do on traditional program interviews. I wonder why they were considering not doing interviews? There are several people who heard this from UT so they must have been seriously considering it. Anyway, the accelerated interviews are in the first part of February, so it sounds like the traditional and accelerated interviews are held during different weeks?
  21. I ran across this thread and thought I'd drop a quick reply in hopes to ease some of the anxiety of fellow applicants. :) I am applying for May ABSN program and received an interview invitation on 1/10 (which is even before the traditional program deadline I think, 1/15 - right?). Chaos0058, you are correct: Mac013's friend is definitely an accelerated applicant. I've also been told by one of the admissions coordinators that they are not doing interviews for the traditional program anymore. Hope that helps! Good luck to everyone!
  22. First, congratulations! Second, I'm guessing you are talking about San Antonio, not Houston... yea? :-)
  23. I'm not in nursing school, but am hoping to be soon. I began looking at schools about 10 months ago (starting with about 40ish schools nationwide) and finally narrowed it down to just a few. US News has 2007 nursing school rankings that are in interesting (and that's about all) to look at, but the best thing you can do is make a list and just start going through them while collecting info from places like here and and any RN friends you have. They are all different, plus it can depend a lot on what you are looking for (BSN, ADN, 2nd Degree, online, price, what type of RN job you hope to get after, career goals, etc.). Just my opinion, but here are the schools (in Texas) that I looked at and thought were all good options. A lot of these got scratched from my list for various reasons (price, prereqs, start date, etc.), but all good schools I thought: (in no particular order) 1) UTMB 2) UTHSC Houston 2) UTHSC San Antonio 3) UT Tyler 4) TWU (programs in both Dallas & Houston - the dallas campus has a new facility) 5) UT Arlington 6) UT Austin (you said not to mention this one, BUT it belongs on the list) 7) Baylor There are of course other programs like A&M, TX Tech, etc.... but these are the ones I thought were the top picks. Here is a list of questions (definitely not exhaustive) I asked/thought about when researching schools: 1) NCLEX pass rate (1st time) 2) cost vs. value (namely - does the extra $ for a place like Baylor get you a better job than a place like UTA?) 3) How many clinical hours (there's a minimum, but past that sometimes it can vary between schools)? In what format (group vs. precep)? 4) What hospital(s) do I rotate in? 5) Class format? (online, in-person, mixed) 6) program length? (18 months vs. 24 months, etc.) 7) Faculty availability and support? Student-Instructor ratio? 8) What percentage of students have jobs when they graduate from here? (account for the economy of course) I could keep going, but you get the idea. Looking at the length of this post, it's probably more info than you wanted. Last thing - interviews. Yes. Some places have them, others don't. But it sounds like you're finding out what I did - admittance to nursing school is competitive. Good luck!
  24. I got an email invitation today as well. Mine is on Feb 14th. Good luck!
