ER last night made me mad!
You have got to be who I think you are. There cannot be two of you. I notice you just joined this group today. Nevermind. Have a nice life. The Monist

No. But I learned a lot. I'll never do the same thing when I'm an RN. The Monist

Good or Evil?
Actually, that's a broad definition of the word, but it's close. Technically, I'm an acosmic monist. I believe that only God exists and everything else is an illusion created by God, and so doesn't exist or isn't real the way God is real. As for being compatible with nursing, I would say that it is. I see my patients as myself. I see my coworkers as myself. Naturally, I'm somewhat fanatical about the Gospels. I couldn't care less about the other books of the Bible, but Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and even Thomas really get to me. Thanks for letting me ramble. The Monist

Good or Evil?
You don't believe in God? And we are not then meat puppets? Interesting dichotomy. I think you don't believe in God because you don't see the forest for the trees. Be that as it may, I agree with your MO regarding pain meds and homeless screamers. I wish I could give more info, but if I did, and that nurse were in this forum, he/she would immediately know who I was and that I was talking about them. So, I guess this conversation is over. But the title is Good and Evil, so we could go around on that for a while. Don't you think you've ever seen or read about or saw on the news some example of "evil?" The Monist

Good or Evil?
Your theories are very intriguing, except for one small detail: I'm not an RN yet; I was a student. So, discount me, but I saw what I saw. If it makes you more comfortable, we can just drop this whole string and move on to some new business. The Monist

Good or Evil?
once again, what are you talking about? you seem to be quite strange...almost scary. it really frightens me that you take care of patients! i wish i had a dime... oddly enough, i pray before every shift that god will give me a good attitude, patience, and the knowledge that i need to get through the shift. does it work? maybe you should do that same ...pray for yourself and not label people as good and evil. i tell you, if i weren't already a christian who was secure in my beliefs, you would definitely turn me completely off the word of god. your turning on or off to the word of god is entirely between you and god. please don't ascribe powers to me that i don't possess. god wants us to be a living example ("...they will know us by our fruits") i hope you don't go around your unit "preaching" your twisted views of christianity. remember, god will hold you accountable for that, too. sometimes, it's just better to shut our mouths and be a living example...like i try to do! yeah, you're obviously very kind and non-judgemental. and in truth, i don't talk about my religion at all to my patients. the monist

Good or Evil?
Well, that's surely one way to make the evil disappear: just invent a whole new scenario where it doesn't exist. The Monist

Good or Evil?
It's funny that you're a secular humanist and don't believe in God, since God, Himself, aspires to be a secular humanist and has to try really hard to believe we exist. But that's another topic. So you would call it negligence. So would I except I know the nurse knew exactly what he/she was doing. No negligence involved. If you don't like the word "evil" I could settle on the word "malice." ER last night made me mad!
you know, you never had to profess it at all, and i still would have guessed that you're a christian. i, myself, am not. but i certainly agree with your statement about attitude in perineal care. as for being crazy, i stopped caring about that a long time ago, but thanks for the observation. it doesn't offend me at all. the monist

ER last night made me mad!
given your attitude, i'll bet my attitude really does bug you. but here's the real difference: i'm not waiting for mds to grant me status or professionalism. i couldn't care less what they think about me. the last thing i need when i'm sick is a nurse that demands respect and pay for their professionalism and education. the last thing the world needs is another self-appointed emperor. the monist

What is the best things I could do to prepare for my senior year?
Study pharmacology. That's all I can say, since I don't know the sylabus for your final two semesters. Good luck. The Monist

ER last night made me mad!
Helping someone onto a bedpan who can't get out of bed to use the toilet is perhaps the greatest honor you will ever have in this world. The rest (money, credentials, power) is all just smoke and mirrors. Cleaning someone up who has soiled themselves is the greatest act of kindness you will ever do. Shows like ER aren't real, so who cares how they portray anything? When you see the truth, you will see that God has played a big joke on those who must elevate themselves to the status of emporer or die trying. If you can't see the incredible honor, dignity and power in being the person who provides perineal care to an incontinent patient--then you're in hell. The Monist

Good or Evil?
I find it interesting that no one has a response to the question: is it evil to withold pain medication from a patient you don't "like." Perhaps good and evil is too deep to talk about, or perhaps it just has no place in modern nursing. Nevertheless, I'm wondering if anyone out there has noticed that the spiritual warfare between good and evil becomes blatantly apparent on the floor and in the units. It seems there's always an opportunity to be an angel or a demon. The Monist

New ....
Where I live, we make probably some of the lowest wages in the US. But, I will start at 31,000 a year working 36 hrs/wk. I personally will work more. I wouldn't feel like a professional or a man if I didn't work 48 hrs/wk. So, soon after I start, I figure I will make about, 42,000 a year. For me, that's the best money I've ever made. And to think I get that for doing what I love to do. I get that and I get to build the Kingdom of God at the same time. I get that, and I get to build the Kingdom of God and hold one of the most highly respected professional positions in the world. It's like some kind of Divine joke, or gift, or something. But Jesus said, seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you (Food, clothes, shelter, etc.). I guess he was right. The Monist

Good or Evil?
I know, without getting too deep, that the only purpose a human being serves is to build the Kingdom of God in the physical world. Nursing provides a fantastic opportunity to do just that and still be able to make a living. But not everyone in nursing is building the Kingdom of God--some are just down right evil. I knew a nurse once who I observed giving a 17-year old girl all the pain medication she wanted while at the same time refusing to give a homeless man adequate pain medication. The only motivation seemed to be that /p giving the pain meds the patient would have to be kept in the unit longer. Obviously the girl could stay, but the nurse didn't want the homeless man around. The nurse wanted him out and to the floor as soon as possible. Would you call this evil? I'm being deliberatly vague to erase any possibility of linking this post to the actual persons involved. Background Checks
One can only assume what you are saying is the complete truth of the situation. No one can answer this question for you. The BON decides who will be a nurse and who won't. Only they can answer this question for you. Before going too far toward a nursing degree, I'd make an appointment to see someone at the BON about it. There are ways to build the Kingdom of God other than nursing. What about animal care, teaching, or social work? The Monist

Religion's Place in Nursing
Many people who come to nursing do so because they either know directly or sense that it is one of the greatest tools for building the Kindgom of God. Naturally, there will tend to be more Christians than any other religion for that reason. The Monist

Why is it MEN seem to get along better in this field than WOMEN??!!!
I'm saying it doesn't matter if women are professionals or not. I'm saying we are a male dominated species, so men call the shots. It doesn't have to be this way, but it is reinforced by women more than it is by men. Women keep acting like women and keep insisting that men act like men. Case in point: One flower-patterned or teddy-bear patterned warm up jacket can throw all the educational credit a woman has down the toilet in the eyes of a male HCP. One calendar with male nurses and doctors hanging up in the nurses station proves only one thing to a man: women become nurses to marry a doctor. I want to treat the women where I work more like professionals than they will ever allow me to do. Sad but true. The Monist

ADN vs BSN
The only education that is required is what the industry demands. Formal education marches to the beat set by the industry it serves. The rest is just smoke and mirrors and academic musing. Right now, the industry demands an ADN or even a diploma. This will continue for as long as there is a shortage of nurses. If there was a shortage of social workers, they'd only be required to have an associate degree as well. It used to be that a psych tech needed a bachelor's degree--now they don't need any degree at all. The Monist

I Just Graduated--I won't be going back!
I agree completely. I'm only talking about formal education /c degrees, not education itself. And you're right: the only way I can have a bedside to work at is if I have a manager to manage the unit. Where would I be if I didn't have nursing school instructors to teach me and provide the hoops I needed to jump through to become a nurse? And the day I get sued for malpractice (hopefully never) I'll probably appreciate the legal nurse consultant or the attorney who's also an RN. The Monist
