Is there REALLY a nursing shortage?
angel337 - please excuse my ignorance but what is a med-tech?

Move to Australia
Koalablue - Can I have your dog? I love boxers. My boxer is yet to be born as I fully intend to be a responsible "carer" and wait until I have a stable job and house. I have been wanting a boxer for the last 15 years with many many close calls. So can I? What if I beg?

Paramedic to RN: Where do I belong?!
It sounds like ER wouldn't be the place for you. I am an aspiring Paramedic and I have been for several ride alongs. I have been told about their worst cases. A guy called an ambulance because he cut his face shaving - when the intensive care paramedic asked what he should do about it the guy responds "i thought you guys knew all about this stuff?" another guy has complained about non-specific pain and when taken to hospital "escapes" to the nearby pub district. My solution is somewhat mean. I'd respond with concern.... a lot of concern. "this is bad" we had better get you seen to as soon as possible. Then race them off to a hospital far far away. say the next town? Hey you only have to get them to a Hospital. not the most convenient oh yeah. Our Ambulance was recently made free (well you pay a compulsory levy) and they are getting hammered. The firies are very angry that they have been made to go out to some of these calls Yeah. If you were to work in the ER it would be more of the same

How do you feel about child molesters?
probably lower than that. The truly disturbing thing is that some don't even think what they are doing is wrong. Truly sick individuals

Where to start on the nursing journey? x posted from introductions

How do you feel about child molesters?
Also children don't vote and the monster does. Priority number one for most politicians seems to be re-elected.

How do you feel about child molesters?
OOO Blackcat99 - you are a bit of a stirer :) This thread will quickly degenerate into a nasty little one. So why don't I start. They lose all citizenship rights and are to leave the country immediately. They are taken into international waters and kicked off. Problem solved

The "Queen and her son" of Frequent Flyers
Thanks everyone for the great posts. They really brightened up my evening. Stretch thin - a suggestion for the guy with the cath... get a male to perform it and make him go in with a large tube then he can mumble something about getting the kids size. Ruin the poor FF's day. You could also tell him that he has to wear a nappy. I am sure that would go down real well. Thanks again everyone. Keep up the good work and don't forget that the FF's keep you employed.

Paramedic to RN: Where do I belong?!
Actually thinking about ER... as a paramedic you had the opportunity to drop them off and letting someone else deal with them. If you go with the ER option then you would become that someone. Also I take it you wanted a change but staying within the health care field. ER would be more of the same. The more I think about it the more delivery sounds like the go. a bit of drama but with a happy ending being predominate. :)

Why is it MEN seem to get along better in this field than WOMEN??!!!
Farkinott - Be very careful as some don't apreciate humour on this post.

Paramedic to RN: Where do I belong?!
Great question. I want to go the opposit direction (RN - Paramedic). I do like your take on the different area's. I'd go for delivery. ICU sounds a bit to messy (after all they are very sick and can not look after themselves)

Dam Beavers!!
Thanks for sharing that with us. It made me laugh. What would be good is to hear their response

I'm so frustrated and sad...
Stop complaining. You are lucky to be a nurse. Next time they ask you should never complain and ask if you can do more....... I hope you relise that I am joking. Honestly how much do they expect you to give? I bet if the patient had an adverse reaction you would be wearing the blame. Hope they don't do this to you on a regular basis. I worked 12 hour shifts 6 days a week for 6 weeks. When I asked for a day off I was told no then the next day I was sacked (did me a big favour) because I left on time the night before (and this was in a warehouse packing boxes not dealing with peoples lives)

Pa RN Survey: average age 45.2.... 57.2% dissatisfied with job, < 36 leave in 10yrs
One day the powers that be will address the problem (i think it has a lot to do with being based at university). Until that day we will just have to bust our hump and wait for the day to say "we told you so, and not just once either".

Whistle Blower Protections Goes to Committee
Don't know how things are in the US but here in Australia we hate "cobber dobbers" and traditionally whistle-blowers are crucified. This is despite the fact that the decision is never taken lightly, they have exhausted all the "right" channels and have very real concerns regarding public safety. I can't see this attitude changeing at all.
