  1. In the Dallas/Ft. Worth area they have a "list" called care one or source one, something like that... anywho, if you get fired or don't work out your notice from any facility and someone places you on this list, you might as well move out of the state because you basically will not get hired by any medical establishment. Not even a back door pain clinic will hire you! It sucks because I've been told that they don't have to tell you that they are placing you on this list or the reason that they do and there is NOTHING you can do about it to get your name off.
  2. I graduated last August and it took me 3 months to find a job. I finally had to accept a position on a floor and then when I could transfer into the unit I did and it was much easier to do it that way. I was very discouraged when I had to do this but I got a lot of good experience at a slower pace while I waited the 6 months to transfer. I know you want to go straight into the unit but maybe this is an option???
  3. I am sorry that you had to do that, I myself am not sure how I will handle this. If it makes you feel better know that you have helped me by posting this, sometimes you can't always find the right words but you had enough integrity to admit that you were the nurse that slipped on the phone. Plus you apologized for your wrongs and were there for the family! I bet you are a wonderful nurse and the fact that this weighs so heavy on your heart shows that you have a true compassion for your patients and their families! Thanks for the post!

Elisa - I graduated in August and it was really hard for everyone to find jobs, in fact it took me 3 months. I eventually got hired as a rehabilitation nurse which I loved but I have always known that I wanted to be an ICU nurse, with my hospital they prefer to hire within so when I applied for a transfer, when a position in the MICU became available I really didn't even go on a interview. It was more like "hey glad you applied, here is what you will be doing, were glad to have you" My best advice to you is to keep your chin up and you heart set on what you want, I had to take a detour to my dream job which sucked but I got there! GOOD LUCK and I hope you get either position!

I just wanted to say.... That I finally start in the MICU in 1 week. I'm super super super excited and all I have ever wanted to be since I was a 5 years old is an ICU nurse. No seriously I was probably the only 5 year old that skipped on watching Barney so I could watch Rescue 911 and Trauma Life in the ER. That is it, if you could see my smile it would be ginormous!
  6. i'm proud of what i do, and i am proud of what i have accomplished! being a nurse is not "just" a job its part of who you are as a person. you can't be "just" a nurse, or at least that is how i feel about it. apparently some people on here do see it as "just" a job??? nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of god's spirit? it is one of the fine arts: i had almost said, the finest of fine arts. - florence nightingale that is all!
  7. I did have a patient refuse for me to take care of them one time because I "looked" too young and they wanted an adult to give them meds and not a high school kid. She actually thought that I was part of some high school shadow program. OMG!!!! I had been out of nursing school for a year at this time. I just had to laugh and let my charge nurse know so I could be switched!
  8. I love my medical apps on my iphone, but I use them more for "reassurance" or to double check my thinking or calculations. If I saw something that I had no clue or had never seen or calculated I would check book references or ask a more knowledgeable source. I would never use it in front of a patient or patients family. We have 2 major nursing schools in my area and at one you are not allowed to have your cellphone or PDA on your body in clinicals but at the other you are required to have a PDA or smartphone with a drug book app??? So I guess you might be partial to where you went to school!
  9. I had the opportunity the other day to make a bed for the first time since nursing fundamentals and I LOVED IT... and yes I did the hospital corners!
  10. All the ATI books are fab!!!! I highly recommend them to anyone!
