I was an extern and the hospital I worked for (not just the unit) didn't hire. There are just soooo many new graduates and not enough hospitals willing to hire new grads. I have been out of school since 2009 and just within the last week got a job. I do believe though that my externship experience gave me a step up on other applicants. Glad I did it. While it may help, working while in school doesn't mean you will get a job. You almost have to get lucky these days to land a new grad position.

I graduated in December 2009. I just now (with in the last week) got a new grad position in a hospital. It was very frustrating trying to find a job. I tried applying for retail but wasn't able to get a position because I was over qualified. I also tried to get a tech job but again I was over qualified. I feel very lucky to have gotten this job. While it isn't the area I wanted it will valuable experience. Don't give up. I know it is very frustrating but something will open up. I was definitely shocked when I graduated to discover how hard it would be to find a job. I knew it wouldn't be that easy but was not expecting it to take 8 months. I feel very very fortunate.

I used the Saunders comprehensive study guide and the box question set, and I also used Kaplan strategy book. I passed easy first time. Love Saunders. I have also heard the Exam Cram book is good. Also, the Hurst review (I did it a couple times while in school) was helpful. Good Luck!

I looove IguanaMed. They are a bit pricey I think but definitely worth it. The fabric is very comfy and they have lots of pockets and they fit well. My facility requires RNs to wear navy blue and white so I am disappointed I can't really wear all the fun colors out there. I also like Cherokee Fit, Urbane, and Koi.
