For Fun - Things You Want to Buy Once You're a Nurse
I haven't even started yet, but I'm going to nursing school so that I can boost our income. Assuming I can finish my ADN in 5 years, my kids will then be 16, 13 & 10, I'm hoping to work just a shift or two a week (probably a night shift) to begin with, which would allow us some breathing room. I am hoping I can make it through without taking on additional debt. If that is the case, we'll save half of whatever I make. We homeschool, right about when I graduate, my oldest will be able to begin taking classes at the CC, so they'll get my money for many years to come. I'm also getting my degree to allow my dh to retire at 55 (we're 40 now). He's an art teacher & he'll be eligible to retire with 80% of his salary at age 55. My degree would allow us to do that, I'll increase my shifts as the kids get older, and when he can retire I'll be the breadwinner for a while. :) He'll be getting out of teaching, which he loves now, before he gets too bitter about the politics. That is priceless. So, I don't have a purchase list persay, just lifestyle goals, I guess.

Introduction.
JustDeena, I am aware of that, but in my last two years (when I'll be working on those courses) my kids will be a bit older (14, 11 & 8 by then), so it won't be as hard. I may end up needing to pay a fellow homeschool parent or a sr. homeschool student to stay with them. I'll work it out when I get to that point. Junebug1313, I'm so glad I'm not alone (over 40 & just getting started). I don't think I could handle the commute, though if you record your lectures, you could listen to them on the road. FPCC is pretty close by, so that won't be a problem. In the long run I think this will really help make things better for myself & my family.

Can I do it??
I think you can do it! I am 40, have no college degree, three kids (11, 8 & 5), whom I am homeschooling & I'm going to start prereqs for my adn. I am scared, but I think it will be great for me & my family. :)

Any other pre-nursing students over 45?
I am 40 years old and just beginning prerequisites, actually I haven't even signed up yet, so technically I'm contemplating. I am going to meet with an advisor at the local CC this week. I would like to have my adn in 5 years. I started prereqs 12 years ago, but found out I was pregnant towards the end of the first semester. I have 3 kids now, 11, 8 & 5, whom I am homsechooling. I love my kids, but I need something that is mine. I want to complete things, I even want to be graded. LOL My plan of attack is to take the science courses one semester at a time, and I'd like to finish everything but the NUR courses in three years. I hope that is a reasonable goal. Reading all of your posts is very inspiring. :)

Introduction.
Hi All, I just found this board & I hope it will be a great help as I start this new path. I am 40 years old, homeschooling mom to 3, my youngest is 5.5. I am planning to start at FPCC to earn an ADN over the next 5 years. I know, I know, that is a loooooong time, I could get a BSN in that time, but I can not go full time. At this point just taking one class a semester seems brave & challenging. I haven't even met with an advisor, so I'm not even sure if my plan is realistic. I am hoping to take my science classes one at a time b/c science scares me a little. I have no idea when to apply for the nursing program, I know there is a long wait list, but unlike most, I'd be worried about getting in too soon, rather than too late. Part of me feels like I'm crazy to even start this at my age, the other part of me says I'm young, I'm healthy, and there are a lot of years ahead of me..... Any thoughts or ideas & especially support are very welcome. :)

Anyone starting FPCC this fall?
Hi, Are you in the nursing program, or starting prereqs? I haven't even registered yet, but I'm planning to take my first prereq course there this fall, an evening class, biology or chem. I'm 40, my dh is a teacher, we have three homeschooling kids & I'm making a 5 year plan (thus my user name). In 5 years I'd like to have my ADN. I know that may seem silly to some, but I want to take it slow & be very realistic about how much I can handle in any given semester. I figure if I don't start now I'll never have it, but if I do start now I'll get there eventually.
