Being second guessed by long time nurse
To answer everyone who is wondering if I'm new to my job, I'm not. I have been in this position for over a year and have worked with this nurse about a dozen times. I've worked at this hospital for a little over 3 years. I must be doing something right thought since my boss has been having me orient new employees that were just hired. Like I stated previously I know that it is her responsibility for everything to be done for our pts. She is the only RN that I work with that treats me like I'm stupid. For example after report is done she insists on going over what is going on with all of our pts. i.e. their dx, if they have an IV, are on I&O, have a foley ect. I was sitting in report the whole time along with her, I know what is going on with my pts. and if I don't know I ask before heading out to the floor. I think it might just be the way she approaches me that bothers me. There have been other nurses (RN's and LPN's) who have had the same sort of issues with her and a couple left their jobs. I don't think she was totally the reason but had a role to play in it.

Being second guessed by long time nurse
I am currently a nursing student entering my senior year of school. I work at a hospital in my home town. Over the weekend I was on a team with an RN on the 11-7 shift. She was watching me like a hawk and treating me like I don't know what I'm doing. I know that I'm a student and still learning but I have worked in the hospital setting for 2 years and as a CNA in LTC for 2 year. I feel confident in the aide role that I'm in. When I don't know someting, I ask for help. That how you learn. Once last rounds were done I was busy documenting my I&O's and she kept asking me if I had documented something. I know that it is her responsibility for things to be done correctly with our team of pts. I don't need her to hold my hand. While she was bugging me day shift was coming on so there was no where for me to go and tell her to get off my back. Now I wish I would have been more assertive so that it doesn't happen again. I might see her tonight when I get done working the 3-11 shift. Should I confront her or just let it go. I'll take any suggestions.

Who's #1 your patient or you?
Pt. is #1 in my book. I leave my personal problems at the door and don't let them interfere with the care I provide. I don't take my break until I know that there is enough staff to provide safe care while I'm gone.

I just became a CNA, need help
I would suggest that you apply at a local nursing home and work there first till you get all the your CNA nursing skills down good. If you have no experence in this field you aren't not going to know what to do in some situtations if you are on your own. At a nursing home you will have other CNA's and nurses who you can ask questions that you have to.

which nursing model?

Failed the stupid CNA test again...for what???
I failed my CNA test the first time too. Don't be so hard on yourself. The written part was super easy. Then I got to the skills portion. My tester had told the person who was my pt. to try and trick me. The skill that I screwed up was dressing a pt. with a weak side. I know that you are suppost to start with the weak side and I was concentrating really hard on doing the correct side. The tester told me that the pt. had a weak left side. The pt. gave me her right hand first and I just thought she was trying to help me but she was just trying to make me fail. I passed the second time around. No longer work in LTC but it was a good experence.

Socializing with Residents
Where I work there is one Dr. that goes to the local bars with some of the nurses sometimes. I don't think is has happend in a while since he is newly married.

5 worse things a patient can do ...
1. Code 2. Fingerpaint with their poop and then rub it on your arm when you are cleaning them up 3. Decide that they want to trade beds with their roommate so they can be by the window 4. Put the call light on for something and also send a family member to find you to ask the say request 5. Spit

What is your grading scale in nursing school?
Where I attend nursing school I think that the grading scale is unfair. There is a shortage of nurses in this county. Why make it so difficult for nursing students to help fill the void. I do agree that nursing school should be hard, we all still have to pass the NCLEX to practice. If you don't know what you are doing most likely you won't be able to pass it. My grading scale is as following 93-100% A 92-86% B 85-76 C.

shadow kid
I am currently in nursing school, not quite an RN yet. I do work in a hospital though. Your question about shadowing is a good one. If your guidence counsler isn't following through call the hospital that you are interested in working in. Ask for the nurse manager and explain your situation. I'm sure they can steer you in the right direction and will probably be the one that assigns you to an RN anyways. With your question about what classes to take to prepair for nursing school. Contact that university and ask for a listing of what they require. You don't want to have to pay for these classes in college to catch up. Do them now in high school while they are free. Hope this helps!

some of my coworkers are spending way to much time on personal phone calls
I work as a tech under an RN on a team of pts. On a 3-11 shift I was doing rounds and 2 of my pts. were fresh post-ops. Both of these pts. were in pain and another one of the pts. was nauseaed. I went to find the RN to ask her to medicate these pts. I found her sitting in the break room having a personal conversion on the telephone. I approached her and relayed that 3 pts. needed medicated. She said ok and continued to have her unnessary personal conversion for about the next 20 minutes. There were 2 other RN's on the floor but they had about 10 pts. apiece themselves so I didn't want to ask them to do my RN's work. Aproaching the 20 minute mark our nursing supervisor came around the corner. I approached her and told her that the RN over me had continued to talk on the phone even though I had requested that she should medicate our pts. Tattling on someone isn't something that I normally do. I always try to resolve the situation on my own. Anyways the supervisor asked her to get off the phone and she did. The RN wouldn't speak to me for the rest of the evening. I didn't want to get her in trouble, I just wanted to be an advocate for my pts.

From bad to worse in my facility
I worked in LTC for 2 years as a CNA. I would not want any of my fellow CNA's caring for me for any of my loved ones. I know what you are saying about poorly educated, I don't think that McDonald's would hire any of these people. One of the CNA's could not even read. What I don't understand is how she passed the exam to become a CNA, you have to read the questions and answer them. All I know is that I will never go back to LTC, like the hospital much better.

What Is Your Most Gross, Yucky, Disgusting Nursing Horror Story?
I work on a med-surg floor. Had a confused nursing home pt. in the geri chair at the nurses station so we could keep an eye on him. I asked him if he wanted a drink of water and he said yes. Got him a glass and ran to answer a call light. He must have been really thirsty cause I walked by a few minutes later and noticed that there was something yellow in his glass. Not thinking what it was I walked away and got about 10ft. when I realized that he had peed in the glass. I turned around to take it from him and he had the glass to his mouth and was drinking it. Thought I was going to puke.

Your Worst Mistake
I accidently gave a large skin tear on the forearm to one of the res. at the nursing home I used to work at as an STNA. I was trying to feed her lunch in her room, most res. went to the dining room to eat but she was disruptive and yelled out SOS all the time. The other res. would get distracted and not eat if she were in there. Anyways she usually tried to push your hands out of the way and I tried to gently restrain them in her lap. She out muscled me and moved her arm across my watch, I think on the part that sticks out to change the time, and boom huge skin tear. Felt terrible, wanted to cry.
