What does an RN REALLY do?
I thought I hated nursing my first semester first day in LTC but once I got comfortable I loved it. Then this semester I thought I hated med surge when we had clinical and we just had peds/ob rotation and I actually was missing med surge where we were running around like crazy. Haha. I think sometimes you just think you don't like an area of nursing until you get comfortable and become good at the routine. If you aren't really into bedside the OR is pretty amazing. I had a day in the OR and really loved it. You never know until you get a taste of everything.

From a student, to, hospital floor nurses...
As I student I am asking why there are so many nurses that complain about being "underpaid". Can someone please describe whether by underpaid you mean not paid enough for the job your doing because it's stressful, tiring, and you have an overload of patients, or do you mean that you are just not paid enough at all like you are making under 20 an hour? You can't afford to feed your family or pay bills? Because when I hear so many nurses saying they are underpaid it really worries me, I have over 20,000 dollars in student loans and if I get out of school and can't pay them because I'm that underpaid I would just like to know now so I can prepare for that.

Any nurses out there graduate knowing everything?
I am just wondering if any one who is a nurse now graduated and felt like you "knew everything". Did school prepare you for the nursing world? Right now I'm studying for an exam and am feeling extremely overwhelmed to the point where I don't even want to be a nurse. I feel this way sometimes when I get overloaded with information. I love being in clinical, but I just cannot understand how we are supposed to remember all of these diseases and what they do and what meds they are treated with, and then complications, and interactions. I'm really freaking out. Does all of this knowledge come with years of nursing or am I just an idiot?

Advice from someone who might have "been there"...
I'm not sure what class this happened with but since you say that you are well into school I can only assume that it is a pretty important class such as Adult 1, Adult 2, ect. If other students received the same non passing grade as you and were passed then you should feel sorry for them because they are going to be lost in the classes following this one because they obviously did not learn the material well enough. I know you are ****** that it is unfair that some were passed and you were not, because I agree that it is. But you have no one to blame but yourself, you earned those grades no one gave them to you. School, and especially nursing school is not about what letter grade you get but it's about understanding the material. Yes it is nice to get great grades but all of us struggle in nursing school. If you feel absolutely confident that you could walk into a patients room with no instructor help you out and apply the things that were taught in that course then alright, but since you didn't pass I'm guessing that you couldn't. When it comes down to it, you are dealing with lives that is why there are rules and cutoffs for what is passing and what is not. The only thing I can say is to take it over, and deal with it and don't allow yourself to be angry that you had to retake the class. Since its a repeat you will know the material better, don't think of it as a set back just think of it as another chance to learn all of the things you missed the first time.

requirements for crna and rn?
If you don't want to administer anesthesia then you do not want to be a CRNA. If you want to be in the OR and assisting the surgeon then you might look into being RNFA, or CNOR which is just a certification for RN's to work in the OR specialty. Nurses work in the OR a lot where I live along with surgical techs. I'm not quite sure what your question is, but if you wanted to get a BSN it is usually 2 years of prerequisites basics in math, english, anatomy and chemistry, ect. and they get an general associate of arts degree and then its another 2 years to get a BSN which is the nursing specific classes and clinical. Good luck with whatever you decide!

BSN student in need of advice
I am currently in a BSN program and we are in our second semester. I have recently been having trouble with my patho class. I made a 68 on the first test and I am feeling really discouraged. I feel like there is so much information that I don't know where to begin when I sit down to study/read. Some days I feel like I am never going to be a nurse, much less a good one who knows their stuff. I really do love working with patients, and I want to be successful in school and my career. My boyfriend doesn't understand sometimes that I need to be alone and study, its hard for me to juggle him and school along with family and friends. I am feeling overwhelmed about how I am supposed to divide up my time. I am just looking for some advice about things that help you out in school or how you made it through your program. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

help with dementia patient please!
My very first patient ever in nursing school was a dementia patient. I remember the first day of clinical trying to feed him breakfast and he slapped apple juice all over my white uniform lol. At first I was really afraid of him, but after the third week in the nursing home I actually looked forward to taking care of him. I ended up meeting his wife who was such a sweetheart. Some days he would be angry and combative, and other days he would be depressed and really upset at times. He was never lucid though at least while I was around. My fondest memory of him is one day while I was feeding him lunch he was talking to me about his wife, he talked about her a lot, and asked where she was or when she was coming to visit. He told me that people had been telling him that she often comes by to see him, so they can try to form a friendship again, and he began to cry. It made me so sad to see him upset, so I told him that his wife loves him very much and she comes by to see him all the time. I told him that when we were done eating lunch that we would go give her a call. I took him up to the nurses station and we called his wife and he talked to her for a few minutes and after the call he wasn't upset anymore. She thanked me for letting him call her, and for being so patient with him. It made me feel so good to know that I made my patient's day better even if it was only temporary. Even when I was assigned another patient I would always go back and check on him every day I was at clinical and ask him how he was doing. I know he doesn't remember me, but he would often thank me for helping him with eating and changing, ect. He was my favorite patient, and I will never forget him!

Accepted into the nursing program, questions about career path
Lol good luck working during a BSN program. You will barely have any time to sleep.

Not scared of the doctors
All of my instructors tell us to never be afraid to contact the physicians if it is necessary. "Don't be scared" is my clinical instructors famous last words for everything haha.
- What is the role of charge nurse?

LPN in need of help!
I'm not sure where you live at I'm assuming , but at Daytona State College they have a transition to professional nursing program for LPNs to become RNs. Since you are already an LPN you shouldn't have a problem getting into the program. It's three semesters long, and it will help boost your GPA since you're concerned with that for getting your BSN, it also doesn't hurt considering that you already have a bachelors degree. A lot of the time ADN to BSN programs are less picky about the GPA then traditional BSN programs. Don't be discouraged just because you're GPA isn't as high as you would like it to be. Just take the TEAS test, and start applying to programs that you would be able to go to if you get in. Here's the link to the Daytona State Program- http://daytonastate.edu/WebCollegeCatalog/catalog.jsp?major=2271&cat=CC11&major2_no=713&archive=false Good luck!

Care plans are stupid.
I really hope this is true to where ever I work after I graduate because I HATE them too. Not that I don't think care should be planned but who has the time to do one on every single patient, at least not as detailed and long as we have to do them in school.

I'm in my first semester of my BSN, not sure if I can do it.
Thank you everyone for the encouragement, it does help to know that other people have felt the same way as me. I will definitely try some of the study tips that were offered to me. And thank you onaclearday for all of the resources I will definitely check them out. :) Thank you all again for making me feel a little better...I do want to be a nurse and I will get through this!
