ERI Review for NCLEX
Hi. I graduated a year ago in FL and ERI was mandatory for us too. I agree, IT IS AWFUL! My advice, just do it, get it over with. Maybe, just maybe, it will help some with your state boards. Good Luck!

Anybody doing a Weekend Program?
I have been working weekends for about a year now. I work Thursday, Friday and Saturday night 7p-7a. We get shift diff. plus $550.00 bonus every payperiod which is every two weeks. We are also allowed to have every 8th weekend off if we reuest it off and can use our paid time off hours to pay for it. I love it. I am home during the week with my kids for activities and it works out well for us. Good luck!!!!!!

12 hr every weekend shifts
I work the weekend plan. We must work 12 hour shifts. Dayshift weekenders work Sat. and Sun. and one weekday. Nightshifters work Fri. and Sat. night and one week night. For example, I work Thur. Fri. and Sat nights. others work Fri. Sat and Sun night.....You get to pick your 3 days. We are entitled to every 8th weekend off but we must request it 4 weeks in advance and we DO NOT have to make up those days so every 8th week we can have 11 days off if we choose. THE CATCH: LPN's receive a $300 biweekley bonus and RN's receive a $500 biweekley bonus. ANY call out any you loose that biweekly bonus. Holidays are still divided up between everybody including the weekend staff and we pretty much do self scheduling which is pretty nice. I love the weekends, that way i am home during the week with my children for school events.....Good Luck to you.

holiday pay
Hi everybody! Quick question.....The hospital where I am employed just changed our policy regarding holiday pay. We have always received a 50% differential (time and a half) for working holidays (there are six of them that count). The time of holiday pay started at midnight the eve of the holiday and continued until 7am the following day. For instance, those that work on Christmas Eve received holiday pay and those that work Christmas night also received holiday pay for their 12 hour shift. Our policy changed and now we only receive holiday pay beginning at midnight the eve of until midnight the night of. Now when we work Christmas night we will only receive holiday pay from 7pm until 12am. I was wondering, how do other establishments pay for their holidays? Due to a lot of negative feedback, our human resources is reviewing it and letting us know if there will be any changes which she doubts. Any feedback would help for suggestions. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are LPN's/LVN's real nurses?
YES!!!!!!!!!! An LPN/LVN IS a NURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was an LPN for 15 years in Florida. I worked in a hospital too! I can honestly say that there is only a FEW things that an RN could do that my hospital does not allow LPN's to do like hang blood, give cardiac IV pushes and maybe a couple of other things. I am an RN now and I value every year that I was an LPN. YES,YES,YES, you are a REAL nurse even though some people will treat you like you are not. They are small minded and VERY uneducated!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to you!!!!!!!

Night Nurses: Why Do You Work Nights?
I work nights for my family. I see my children MORE by working nights. They sleep while I am at work and I sleep while they are at school. I see them for a few hours after school; when they get home, I am getting up! It works great for our family right now. The extra money is great too!

Weekends only "Baylor Plan", how realistic is this for a new grad?
Where I work we are offered the Baylor program. We are required to work six weekends straight and get the seventh off. A weekend consist of 3 days or 3 nights in a row. example: Thursday, Friday and Saturday night or a Sat. Sun. Mon night....Those involved receive: (LPN) $300.00 and (RN) $450.00 bonus every pay period. We are paid biweekly. Not bad. If we call in at all during our scheduled weekend, we lose the bonus for that two weeks. It works for all of us. It is not offered to new grads though. Good luck!!!

Nurses Who Shouldn't be Nurses
From MY experience, I see the difference between those who choose nursing for the money and those who choose it from the heart. I hope you are right and those who choose it for the money will put their heart into it.
-
Nurses Who Shouldn't be Nurses
Well said! When I hear people say they want to be a nurse because of the money it makes me cringe but then I think, they'll never make it. How I would love to see them a year out of school.
-
Nurses Who Shouldn't be Nurses
I must say that I fully agree. I went into nursing because my heart is in it and led me there. I love my profession because I love helping people. There are way to many in the profession for the money but I don't know if that is the reason for the increased complaints. There are a lot of reasons for that like nurse to patient ratio, management......But I don't see a lot of heart in the profession anymore. Sad but true.

No She/he Did Not!!!
Your right. I was taught that technique in LPN school 15 years ago for the exact same reason...so the patient doesn't know your counting their respirations.

How to stay calm if your child is ill?
I am a seasoned nurse and I can tell you that I behaved the same way when my then 4 year old fell and cut her forehead open. It was bleeding everywhere and obvious that she needed stitches. I completely lost it. I was freaking out more than my injured daughter. Thank goodness that my sister was here to help me pull it together and drive us to the hospital. That is your child, I would be concerned if you didn't overreact!!!!! You are NORMAL!!!! Hang in there!

eating at the desk
I completely agree with you. Our new head nurse has started to enforce the same rules and we were also told it is a JCAHO thing with large fines. She comes in at all hours day and night looking for the rule breakers. She never says a word, she just walks up to the item (food or drink) and throws it away! teehee, It ticks a lot of people off. Your right, I never have time to actually sit and eat or drink. It's always those that don't work in the field that make up these ridiculous rules. I often ask myself, "Don't they have anything better to do?"
-
Your Worst Mistake
I too follow those same rules when passing meds. It has saved my behind more than once. A lot of my coworkers think that I am a little anal (teehee) but I would rather be anal than make a life threatening mistake! Keep up the good work!

Do you carry a clipboard
Hi. I have been a nurse for about 15 years now. I have ALWAYS carried a clipboard. I wouldn't be able to work without it. I have a report sheet that I made up and every day when I work I place a new report sheet on my clipboard, fill in the blanks during report and keep little notes on it thru my shift. I highlight my upcoming labs and the times to expect the results, the fingersticks I need to do.....It is basically my brains while I work. I hope this helps.:)

"Just an LPN"....does anyone else get discouraged?
Yes, I know exactly how you feel. People treat you as if your not a REAL NURSE if your not an RN. I have been an LPN for almost 15 years and I work in a hospital. There are only a few things that RN's do that I am not permitted to do. Unfortunately it is only going to get worse as places are beginning to phase out LPNs. I decided to go back to school and I will graduate in April. Good Luck. Don't let people get you down. You are a real nurse!
