FINALLY! The Light at the End of the Tunnel!
Its been a year since I got my CNA certification. I've filled out tons of app. at nursing homes and hospitals but only had 2 interviews. I gave in and started volunteering at a Nursing home, and was even told they would hire me in as soon as they needed to a CNA, but that was a lie. They ended up hiring a few CNA's and I wasnt one......I was beginning to give up hope .............. But I kept applying for CNA/PCA positions at hospitals and Nursing Homes. Than out of the blue a local Hospital called me in for a interview!!! I was excited but still didnt want to get my hopes up because I had no experience and I was told time after time Hospitals only wanted CNA's with at least 6 months under their belts. So I went into the interview expecting the worst but I still put forth my best..............and to make a long story short I start Orientation on the 21 Its a PCA (patient care assistant) position, and I have one question: Does it count as a CNA position for when its time to renew my certification? I read that you need at least 8 hours working as a CNA to renew it

Volunteering
Because I've been unsuccessful in finding a job at a nursing home I've decided to volunteer at one. I Start next week and really don't know what to expect and the only think I've been told so far is basically I'm going to be a babysitter for the patients that get restless after dinner. I put on my app. that I was a trained CNA without experience hoping it might get me in as a CNA (worth a try right lol) I'm very excited, not only because it'll look good on my resume but also because I'm looking forward to some kind of experience in a LTC. To anyone who has volunteered at a hospital or a Nursing home, how was your experience? Did you get hired in? or do you think because you volunteered it help you get a job in a Hospital or LTC/SNF else where? :)

they want a least 6 mo. experience!
I know actually what you're going through......I've been looking for a CNA job for over a year now, I've filled out tons and tons of apps and still nothing and mostly because they want experience All I can say is don't give up the search there is something out there (at least thats what I keep telling myself) I've been told to volunteer and I've filled out a app for this local Hospital and its been a week since I've sent it to them..... Anyway Goodluck! And if you don't mind me asking what State are you from?

This might be a dumb question............

This might be a dumb question............
Ok I have a job interview on Tuesday for a Home-care agency, well they want to see my proof of insurance for my car which is fine and dandy BUT I share my car with my kids father who works and goes to school DAILY so I'm only get the car on the weekends. He'll have to take me to work and drop me off or I'll have to find somebody else to if he's at work or school depending on my work schedule. I figure if they want to see proof of insurance for your car than more than likely they want you to use your car for your job(taking the patient to run errands or to doctors visits or to the er..etc.), right? He seems to think that they just want to see my insurance just to see that I have transportation and if I tell them he'll be bringing me to work all would be well and I would get the job. I just want to clarify what I already figure so I don't waste their time or mines, especially since the job is kinda far from me, it would be lovely if it was as simple as he put it especially since I've been looking for a cna job for a year now .....

At the end of my rope......
So today I went job hunting, its been awhile because I have no transportation and I have to rely on others to take me places (but while I'm at home I search the internet all day everyday for Nursing homes hiring in my area). Anyway I called 35 place and out of the 35 only 4 were hiring for CNAs, so I went to those 4 places early in the morning dressed like I already had a interview equip with everything I needed in case they wanted to interview me on the spot. 2 of the 4 places hiring kindly excepted my applications and told me to call them back in a week, 1 place told me to go to their website to complete the app. (which I wish they would of told me over the phone). So the first 2 places hiring made me feeling like I took a big step towards employment at a nursing home FINALLY!(they were really nice and seem as if they liked my application:) ) But then I got to the last hiring job on my list, which was at least 35 minutes away from my house unlike the last 3!, I walked in asked if they were still hiring and lady gave me and app. I was the longest app of all 4 jobs (including the app I completed on the internet) took me at least 20 minutes to complete then the person I was to give the app to stepped away from her desk for 30 minutes. I'm not complaining about the time all of this took because if it ended with me having employment at their facility (which was a SNF) than it was totally worth it. Anyway 20 minutes after I handed in my app I got an instant interview I just knew I was about to get hired ( boy was I wrong ) As soon as I told the the Interviewer I didn't have any experience she cut me off and told me she sorry she wasted my time but they were only hiring experienced CNAs (of coorifice I wanted to cry) She then asked why if I had my Certification for a year didn't I have any experience I said " Well everybody seems to want CNAs with experience!" and she replied "you're right Nursing homes don't hire CNAs here like they used too " (the last thing I wanted to hear!) I walked out of there with a smile on my face even though she ruined my whole day..... I'm not giving up on finding my 1st CNA job but todays experience has really put me in a depressed state, Its already been a year of no employment and its very stressful.........btw I live in Michigan and unemployment is horrible here! .........sorry for the long post just had to vent...:grn:

Am I too sensitive?
I have read alot of threads about CNA's to prepare me for when I finally get a job. Most have been very informative and give me insight on what I'm getting myself into. Yes most of these threads have scared me but not enough to make me want to give up on being a CNA, I am a very caring person and I want to help those who need it!! Anyway I have seen topics on almost everything from how to deal with feces to vomit on this board but none on how to deal with death. Like I mention in the title I am very sensitive and death is one of those things I have a hard time dealing with and I know in most nursing homes most residents are at the end of their lives Being the caring person I am I can't help but get attach to people I meet even if I've only known them for 2 days, especially if they're kind to me. It will be very hard for me to watch or hear about one of my patients passing away, and no matter how I prepare myself I know I would probably break down in tears. I have a CNA friend that says its not that bad but I just wanted to know how everybody else experiences was with death. Am I too sensitive to be a CNA,? How do you deal with the lost of a resident?
