  1. On the anesthesia records at the facility where I was trained & where I worked for several years, the spaces reserved for signatures had ________________________ CRNA ________________________ MDA Obviously, our MDAs did not feel it is derogatory.
  2. Good for KY! Now 1/3 of all states have opted out! I hope Arkansas will opt out in the near future. I live in Arkansas, work in a community hospital and no MD or DO signs my anesthesia record or behind me when I write orders (r/t anesthesia). Several months ago, the hospital said that the surgeons no longer had to sign our records or our orders because the state nursing laws allow CRNAs to use the hospitals DEA number. Does anyone know anything about this? Do other states allow this?
  3. the nurse, who sends them to the lab for analysis
  4. There are 6 anesthesia providers where I work (5 CRNAs & 1 MD). We perform 90% of the LPs at our facility. There are a cpl of Drs who do them, but most will not even attempt. I work without MDA supervision. The MDA is my boss, but he does his own cases and is in the call rotation just like the CRNAs so pretty much everything we do, we do without MDA supervision. The others things that I occasionally do along these lines is IJ CVLs in the ICU (usually the surgeons do these since they prefer SC CVLs), Art lines in the ICU, & "difficult" intubations in the ER or in OB.
  5. I am a CRNA and previously received the Anesthesia Safety Foundation Newsletter in the mail. I didn't subscribe to this, but I know that the AANA is listed as one of their major donors so thought my membership might have something to do with receiving the newsletter. I haven't received the newsletter in the mail in a while now and was wondering if other CRNAs get the ASFN in the mail? I realize that it's available online, but prefer to get the print edition. My boss (MD) says he still gets it in the mail, so maybe they're only sending it to MDs now.
  6. You might want to think about attending the ASU nursing. I graduated in 03 & was accepted into a very competitive CRNA program the following year & am now a CRNA so it's obviously a good program.
  7. ASU or stAte has a really good nuring program...it's the largest in Arkansas. I graduated in 03 & am now a CRNA.
  8. Well, I actually received by results on the 23rd. I saw that my results had made it to my town, but FedEx wasn't going to deliver them because I didn't pay the extra money for Sat. delivery so I went to the FedEx station & they gave them to me...I PASSED!!! It was a great early Christmas present. On another cool note, the day that I officially became certified (22nd) is also my birthday...what a Bday present!
  9. I'm tracking mine on the fedex website & i'm not getting mine until the 26th:sniff: . I was really wanting to know the results before christmas.
  10. I 100% agree about the valley class...can definately be missed w/out consequence. As far as the books, I think the MM is better than the sweat book, but both are pretty helpful. I studied through both of them only once...i didn't just blaze through them though; took my time. You could know all of the info in both books & from my experience, there will be a lot of stuff on the test that's not covered in the two. Hopefully you get enough questions that are covered in the books so you can miss the 1s that aren't & still be okay.
  11. I just spoke w/a friend of mine who received her results on Dec. 27th last yr so I don't think the CCNA is closed until NewYears.
  12. Please do not misunderstand, I'm really not that upset about the current system. I just htink that it could be much better. They state numerous times not to call and even change of address information must be faxed rather than by phone or on the internet. I couldn't even call to confirm that they recieved my information. Anyway, I'm sure that I'll find out soon enough. Peace in the Middle!
  13. Let me just preface this post by saying that this is JMHO & most posters will probably disagree. Just some advice... I just took boards yesterday. I attended Valley & had the sweat book & memory master. If I had it to do all over, I would not have attended Valley. Just find someone/somewhere to buy the 2 books. I don't think the acutal course helped much at all. You'll need the books cuz unlike the couse, they are helpful.
  14. I was 22 when i graduated w/my BSN. I just graduated w/masters in nurse anesthesia and am 25, but will be 26 in about a wk.
  15. Well, just b/c they tell you if you pass or fail doesn't mean that you have your license. They could show you preliminary results & then give you your official results later. I also understand not wanting ppl viewing their results at the testing center, but they could at least post them on the net. The current process seems very archaic.
  16. I just took my boards. I took 90 questions, but am nervous/anxious to see my results. How long did it take you to get your results? BTW, I think it's kinda ridiculous that the results aren't immmediately available as they are w/the GRE.
  17. If you cannot see a difference, then you must be blind. When administering anesthesia for a woman to have a D&C, you are giving the anesthesia to HELP the woman remain in a comfortable state during the procedure. If the woman is undergoing an elective abortion, you are still helping the woman remain comfortable while the surgeon does the procedure. After all, the woman is your pt, not the zygote/embryo/fetus. On the other hand, if you were to administer the drugs that are given to those on death row, you would actually be directly involved in HARMING/Killing the person. As a result of the drugs that you pushed, the person dies!
  18. Whatever your opinions of Pres. Clinton are, he was & is very Pro-CRNA. His mother was a CRNA in Hot Springs, AR.
  19. I'm a TX Wesleyan RRNA. At my cliinical site, I have had some of the MDA's introduce me as a Resident Nurse Anesthetist or Nurse Anesthesia Resident, as well as Nurse Anesthesia student, but usually it's this is __________, he's part of the anesthesia team. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the MDAs where I practice. That being said, It doesn't matter to me...I'll answer to 'hey you'. ASU also uses my clinical site...they refer to their ppl as SRNAs, but since our program has been using the site longer, everyone is referred to as RRNA.
  20. Your Governor, Bill Richardson, is very cool. I wish he would've ran for President last year!:)
  21. I would buy a laptop, hold off on the PDA until clinicals start, & take an organic chem class or organic biochem class this summer as I heard from my classmates who took the online class that it was only helpful for the 1st few wks of class which is very "do-able" w/out the class. I would not buy the Katzung or the Lipincott pharm book...just the katzung "examination & board review" which is not listed on your book list. Unless you are a speed reader, you will not have ample time to read your assignments from the Katzung book. Do NOT buy the chem book or the chem review book....it's a waste of time as the instructor does not teach directly from it. To be perfectly honest, I don't know if I'd even buy Guyton unless u get a great deal on it. There is a condensed version of the same book that I have not read, but heard is helpful. Dr. Reinke will give you more than enough notes & even says that he tests from his notes (in a very odd & difficult manner). Spend the absolute MINIMAL time w/ethics as it's a pass/fail class & unless u put NO effort into ur presentation, u will pass. If you can write quickly, you may want to take ur own notes instead of using the preprinted notes...it will help u pay attention. I did this at first, but once Dr. Reinke started speeding up, I was unable to keep up with him. Also, since the preprinted notes are ones that previous students typed, there are a few errors...they are not notes that Dr. Reinke has typed...the notes are VERY good though. All of your classes will be recorded & posted on WebCT to view at your discretion. Most will remain online for about 2 weeks. I have not used a voice recorder thus far (used WebCT quite a bit last sem, but not much so far this sem), but as some have stated, they find them helpful. I bought a laptop instead of buying a new desktop just for convenience. Some ppl took notes in class w/theirs, but can't imagine doing that myself. Sometimes, I'd take mine to the library w/me in case i wanted to review something on webct while i was studying my notes (the libary & NA building have wireless internet. However, if you have a pretty good desktop, it's not imperative that you have a laptop. Good Luck
  22. I also attend TWU. Upon completion, you will be receive: M.S.N.A. Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia. You're correct. It's not a MSN....if i were it would probably be Master of Science in Nursing with a nurse anesthesia option.
  23. do/did you actually attend twu? i'll admit that dr. reinke's exams are hellahard, but it is graduate school afterall. he just believes that crna education should not play 2nd to anyone. he taught at a med school before twu & stated in our class last wk that we get the same a&p as his med students did + a little more. i will concede that there are a few things that i do not like about twu (lg class size & crappy campus..but the na building is new & nice), but i guarantee that twu students are some of, if not the best (at least didactically) prepared rrnas.
