  1. Thanks for the advice. This was a hospital surg tech program and they had a merger with a local CC. Im glad I will be coming out with a degree. Im so excited! I have such respect for the nurses and hope that I can be part of a great OR team. I start Tuesday and Im really excited! I cant imagine how it feels to start nursing school..someday:) Now,if I remain vertical first surgery:uhoh3:
  2. Hi everyone, I have been doing pre reqs for nursing for a while.Mainly part time while my children were small.I just moved to the east coast from Calif. I was accepted to a surg tech program at a local CC and will receive an associates degree. I would go straight to R.N, but my finances say otherwise.I need to work sooner than later. I do want my R.N, I always have.Waiting to get into nursing school is not an option right now. I wanted to know how the transition worked for the former techs?Did you quit your job while going to nursing school,or did you keep working?Any advice on how you did it would be wonderful. Thanks! Amber
  3. Hi everyone, Im out in California right now. Im having a house built in Indian Trail. It will be done at the end of May. Ive been doing prereqs off and on for a while now. Im so glad its not a lottery system out there:) I was looking at ADN programs. So far, it looks like CPCC and CCHS are an option. I havent had any Chemistry yet.I was bummed out I would have to take 2 Chem courses at CPCC. I have algebra, english and support classes done.I need the sciences still. I would love some suggestions on what to do.Is it suicide to apply without the sciences done? Thanks! Amber
  4. If the class is completly online, how do they test the lab portion? We had to know all bones and identify them.Wouldnt you be able to look at your book when you tested?
  5. Thanks fun in sun.I have a few courses done, but some are not needed for NC. I have: Pre algebra-A Algebra-A Nutrition-A Human Development-A Psych 1-B English 1A-A cpr for heath provider Im going to take Sociology,Speech and intro to anatomy and physio in Jan.I was going to wait to take the sciences till I get out there.Im too afraid they might not transfer over. I was more concerned on Piedmonts math and chem req.I got through algebra because I keep telling myself this was the last time I would have to take a math class(besides dosage calc) Its frustrating all the colleges have different needs. You would think because it was going towards the same goal they would have the same req. Thanks for the help!:)
  6. hi everyone, im thinking of moving from cali to nc (charlotte area). i was looking at 2 adn programs: central piedmont and carolinas college of health sciences. i went to the website and got the info.but,i had a couple of questions. it looks like if you have never had chemistry, you need to take 2 chemistry classes for central piedmont. (chem 121/121a & chem 131/131a) what the heck? for a adn program???it also says biology.what type of biology? it's not like i can go over to the counseling department. carolinas college of health sciences requires sat scores.what scores are getting in? admissions criteria are completely different than california. we have to finish all the sciences before applying. i cant imagine how any nursing student could take anatomy and nursing courses at the same time! we also have a lottery system as long as you get a 3.0 gpa on the 3 sciences and 2.5 on support classes. any information on these 2 colleges would be great. thanks!!
  7. Well,I just had to withdraw from my online Anatomy.I have a 3.9 GPA and this class was torture. Dont get me wrong,I did great in the lab portion. That was hands on and I did well on all the tests. But,the lecture was online and it was up to us to know the material and understand it.There is something that is lost when you dont have a concept explained to you. I realized that Anatomy was the foundation of my nursing education. They say if you get an A in anatomy, expect to get a b or c in nursing school.Well, that online class was Not doing for me! Just thought you might want to hear another opinion! A. FYI I took online algebra last semster and recieved an A.Online anatomy is a different ballgame!!
  8. I talked to a real estate company out in Charlotte.I asked her what areas were the best. She said for schools stay in area 4,5 or 10.She said stay out of 7.My husbands work is located in area 7.I would love to hear your opinions on areas.Schools are very important, but so are neighborhoods.I dont want a house that is planted in the middle of a field and have to drive 10 miles to a store. I will be going out there for 3 days. However,I would like to narrow the areas down first. Thanks AMber:)
  9. Thank you so much! This information really helps out. Im starting to see that GPA really matters on east coast.Im going to be holding my 3.9 as steady as I can now!! Out here in the Sacramento area the ADN programs are lottery(as long as the sciences have 3.0 cum GPA)Now,I need to see what I need to take for NC. I lived in North Carolina once, but it was rural.I did NOT like it.It was in a small town outside mount olive..which is a small town. The place had a post office..but thats it!! I want shopping, and an area that has parents with young kids. We were looking at the new homes and were Shocked at the prices!!! $150,000 for a house!!!yeeppeeeee! I live in a outdated box for 450,000. Is charlotte spread out,or does it have big city feel? thanks! AMber
  10. Hi, My husband has the opportunity to transfer making the same amount of $ he does out here in California.Since homes start at about 350,000 and up out here,Im really considering this move.Ive been working on pre reqs for the ADN program .I have 2 questons: 1.What ADN programs are in the Charlotte area, and what are the admissions like?Lottery or GPA based? 2.What are the more nicer areas in Charlotte that have new homes and are great for families? Not upscale, but considered the good part?We were thinking of homes in the 180,000 range and under.I want to have stores!!!Im a city gal:p Thanks for all your help! AMber:)
  11. :)Im knee deep with Anatomy right now.Im feeling pretty low.:uhoh21: I know I want this,so I thought we could have a thread that would help the pre nurses get through rough times. This quote helped me get an A in Algebra last semester: "When we consistently give control of our lives to other people and to circumstances, we run the risk of learning to give up,even with abundant opportunity around us." Anybody have any quotes or small stories that helps them stay focused? Amber:)
  12. Have any of you checked out the western career colleges or healds?I was thinking of checking it out,but I heard it costs about $20,000 to go through the LVN program:chuckle
  13. Im taking anatomy at Sierra.I have Physio and micro left to apply to the Rn program.I was thinking of going a little slower and go the LVN route first.Im waiting on 1 more transcript and Im sending the LVN application.I was wondering how long the LVN wait was.
  14. I was wondering if anyone is attending yuba college?Im sending in the LVN application. Does anyone know how long the waiting list is for the LVN program? Thanks! AMber:)
  15. The waiting is killing me Fun2care!Im not waiting for a letter,so I cant imagine what you are going through! I would be driving around looking for that postman!!:)
  16. Thank you for all the support. The application has been on my desk for a couple of weeks.Im going to send it in,and continue to work on the RN pre reqs. My number one priority is my family. If it will takes me longer to get there so I can spend more time with my children....so be it!!!! Amber
  17. Thanks for the info! A.
  18. I am a married mom , 31 years old and have a 11,8,4 year old.I have been working on my prereqs for thr R.N program. Im in Anatomy right now...ugh!Anyway,I have the classes to get on the LVN waiting list at a local college. Most the programs in this area have the bridge program(lvn to Rn)for an additional 2 semesters.I thought it would be better to get my feet wet with the LVN.My husband doesnt even want to hear me think about being a LVN.He says Im giving up!My mom said I wont be happy:angryfire I have been a mom since I was 20.I devoted my twenties to staying at home with the kids.I have no skills that would get me into the workforce.I would like the security if my husband lost his job,we would have some income. Why do I have to defend taking the slower route? I would love to hear from moms that chose to do the "career ladder",and transition to RN slower.Anybody have this conflict with family??:uhoh21:
  19. Hi everyone, Im in Anatomy right now.Our school breaks up the anatomy and physiology.I keep hearing from students...,dont even try taking physio without doing micro first". Should I take micro next semester, then physio in Fall? Any thoughts??
  20. I am going into week 7 anatomy.I made a 85% on the first lab pratical, and a 71% on lecture.I have a 78% in the class right now.I have a 3.9 GPA and this class is really testing my dedication to becoming a nurse! Ever since I was a child I knew this is what I wanted. The last two weeks I have been in and out of the doctors. My hemoglobin was at 7.0 .I am falling behind.Im trying to understand chapter 9 Martini.Boy..it's boring!!!:uhoh21: I have lost my motivation. My husband has done everything from cooking to cleaning to help me. Any suggestions on catching up with the reading?I need to have chapters 9,13,14 done by Monday night. We have 3 chapters in the CNS this week. I have to get at least a B in this class to apply.I really want an A. I want it..just feeling a little low..
  21. well, the MA at my docs office was wacked. She told me to take oral iron with a hemoglobin of 7.1. I started IV therapy with iron today for 15 days and then Im going to hemotologist on Thursday.
  22. I am going through this as we speak. My hemoglobin is 7.1 and hemotocrit is 24.4. The MA at my PCPs office told me to start taking oral iron!I said, what untill I get lower or drop dead?Im a postop gastric bypass 4 years out.Im not absorbing iron orally.I started IV therapy today with iron.Im seeing a hemotologist Thursday. Also, vitamin C help iron absorb.Milk does opposite. good luck!
  23. Many gastric bypass patients turn anemic. The upper portion of the small intestine is bypassed. That is where iron absorbtion primarly takes place.Food is emptied a foot later. So,I am not absorbing what a "normal" person would.
  24. Hi everyone, I am a mom of three doing my prereqs .I am a post op gastric bypass four years out.Lately I have had heart palps/tightness in chest and lethargic.I should also mention I am under care of a physician,I had labs drawn this week. The office called me right away and said I was 7.1/24.4 :They said I was anemic. How low is this?I am taking oral iron and they want to recheck in a week. How low does it have to get when they try other treatments other than vitamins? Im worried that I will not be able to ever catch up with my malabsorbtion problems and monthly cycle.Has anyone dealt with post op gastric bypass patients that go anemic? Thanks! AMber
  25. UGH...Just starting on chapter 5.We have to do chapters 5,6,7 this week.We have a lab quiz on thurs (on histology)I thought I knew them by the books pic.Instructor had them on the microscope today...I couldnt ID half of them!!I want to study them...but then I will get behind with the bones.
