curiousKayPee: No problem! I know y'all probably have a lot of questions. It's definitely mostly day. Class usually starts at 8 or 9 depending on the teacher. We usually get out by early afternoon. But to be honest, our schedule changes all the time. We had a lot of free time with the first 2 classes (pharm and fundamentals), as in 4 or 5 day weekends, but with the adult health I class we're doing now, my weekends aren't really weekends since I spend all day studying and doing clinical paper work. The clinical schedule changes with every class. Right now we have 2 groups who go on Th/F and have sat/sun weekends, and the other 2 groups go to clinicals sat/sun and have th/f weekends. If you're going to have a job, it would definitely have to be VERY flexible. We have only 1 or 2 people I know of who have jobs right now and seem to be doing fine. And we also have a ton of single moms who are making excellent grades and doing well in clinicals! It's just all about time management. Dream2BeNP: I don't have the notes. Unfortunately, mine are written. But to be honest, it really wouldn't do much good to use older classes' notes anyway. The book is Clinical Drug Therapy by Abrams. If you really want to study ahead, I would just go over your anatomy and patho really well. And the sympathetic nervous system, different types of receptors, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone, just the basic things you need to know to understand how drugs work. But you really will be fine if you wait to study when you start the program. And curiousKayPee, you have no idea how badly we all want May to be here! Classes just got more difficult and time-consuming the past couple of weeks.

To clarify, when I say studying ahead of time, I mean before the program starts. I'm not trying to tell you to procrastinate and cram for the tests!

Not sure about the payment plan. Just about everyone I know in the class was offered loans that nearly covered the costs of tuition, even if they didn't actually use the loans. What do I wish I would have known before? Hmm. It's not nearly as difficult as everyone told me going into it, although it has started to get a little time-consuming. Studying the book and notes and knowing them by heart will most likely NOT get you an A (although if it comes down to differences in the book vs. the notes, go with the notes). There are usually some questions on the test that you will be completely unprepared for no matter what you do. You have to learn to let those go. Also, I don't really think studying ahead of time would have done any good. What else? I guess be prepared for anything. The schedule is constantly changing so it's probably best to know now that you won't be able to make plans until you graduate. As far as the uniforms, I think you can buy the tops (white with Our Lady of the Lake embroidered on the chest) at Uniforms by Bayou or at the school bookstore in Baton Rouge. You can buy the pants anywhere as long as you get the galaxy blue color they require. And I recommend this because the pants they will give you at the campus bookstore are both hideous and uncomfortable.

Not sure if y'all are still looking for the tuition costs, but I'm in the Tulane program that started in July. We paid between $2,000 and $3,000 for summer semester, $6,000 for fall semester, and will pay another $6,000 or so for spring semester. As far as books go, so far I've paid nearly $200 for each class (that's almost $200/5-6 weeks) but I recently found out that buying the older edition books off amazon is significantly cheaper and is essentially the same book as the newer edition. My 2 textbooks for the last class only cost $40.

Hiiii Ok so I have some good information for everyone! The TENTATIVE start date is July 19th. Sorry, I forgot about asking the end date but if they don't even know when it starts, I'm assuming they definitely don't know when it will end. Also, I met with a financial aid advisor. The total cost (I think not including books) will be about $14,000. The amount due by July 5 is gong to be about $1,500. Another thing I found out is about WIA. You may or may not be able to get money for this. You have to go get a packet from OLOL financial aid office. It's pretty much just free money because they want people in healthcare fields. I think they give up to $10,000 per person. And you have to round up a lot of your transcripts, work information, birth certificate, acceptance letter... (there's a list of about 20 things). It takes a while to get it together and once you actually submit it to the office, it takes about 4-6 weeks to hear anything back. We are getting a packet with this at orientation, but I didn't know if some of you wanted to start now, considering how long it takes to go through. And thanks, ciao_bella! I found a place off St. Charles I'm hoping to get. If not, I'm going to look in Lakeview I think.

I'm trying to find a place in New Orleans, but it's so hard to find something in a good area that's not too expensive that allows dogs! I may start looking in Mandeville. That wouldn't be a bad commute. And I will let y'all know as soon as I find out about the notes! I'm on a wild goose chase because they've been passed down to other people, so hopefully they will turn up soon!

I have another question for you. Where are y'all living? I mean what areas? THe only people in New Orleans I know live uptown, so I'm really only familiar with housing there. But it seems like we may be better off looking for apts in CBD? I don't know...help! I'm not sure what areas are safe outside of uptown.

Just wondering if there are any older OLOL accelerated nursing students out there who still have the pharm notes and would be willing to share with the students following in your footsteps! Thanks!

woop woop I got in toooo! What a relief. I know when I talked to them in January, classes were starting in July but they hadn't set a day yet. I'm finishing up my 2nd anatomy right now. Also, I know some old posts on here had people offering the notes for pharmacology...but I private messaged those people and either they haven't responded or they don't have them anymore. I'm going to ask a girl who graduated from OLOL BR to see if she still has them. If I find them, I'll let y'all know, because I've heard it's helpful to start studying pharm early. See y'all June 3rd!

Actually I just heard that the letters will be sent out this week!!!! They said we should get them in a week or 2.

No news yet. Last Monday I called and was told they had not made a decision yet but that we should hear something in a couple of weeks. That's for Tulane though. My guess is for Metairie and Baton Rouge you'll have to wait another month or 2.

I have been calling and calling and calling the admissions at OLOL (any of you who have tried know what I'm talking about) and no answer. I submitted my application for the Tulane accelerated nursing program, and in the box where it asks if you are still interested in the other programs (in Metairie and BR) I checked yes. Now I've been hearing a lot more good things about the BR campus, plus with my current money situation, I think a cheaper cost of living in BR vs. New Orleans would be better. So I guess my question is...if I already applied to the Tulane campus and get in, can I still wait to find out if I get into the BR campus and then make a decision, or is it a done deal once you're accepted, take it or leave thing?

I guess I would argue and say I'm just as educated about the matter as anyone else arguing on here. However much reading you choose to do, everyone can find different information to back up their views. I think Michael Moore is crazy and support Glenn Beck, and you are choosing to do the reverse. Maybe we should each give the other a shot? I would refute that Glenn Beck is far from anti-Government. He will admit to being called that, but he is actually for small government, which I will agree with. The larger a government, the more powerful and out of control it gets. This seems to be where our current government is going (it also seemed to do this under Bush). To get back to topic, I feel we will likely find out soon enough whether or not universal healthcare in America is a good idea or not...so for now, I guess we will agree to disagree.
