Declining new patient soc
You did the right thing. If you are not competant at doing the task safely then don't do it. If you were to have done it, a small mistake could be fatal to an infant. Its better to just decline a patient then to put your license on the line or get sued.

Hi, I was wondering how home health moms pump milk on the go? I will be starting a new hh position next week and have no idea how I'll be washing my supplies or storing my milk for 8 hours during the day? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Impossible to get into another field of nursing! Advice pls!
Thanks for the advice. I do apply but the problem is that online applications don't see the interest. I think it automatically kicks out resumes one you hit the button that shows you don't have experience in the area. That is the problem nowadays when everything is computerized. I'll keep trying though! Thanks!

I've been a med/surg/tele nurse for 3 years and am tired of the hospital environment and the stress of the unpredictability. I want to move onto something like pre and post op care, Pacu, or even ambulatory nursing where its a bit more streamlined and predictable but it seems like all the job postings require specific experience first. Any suggestions? I work in California by the way.

Is 2 years experience charge nurse ready?
I have 2 years on med/surg/tele. I regard myself as charge nurse material in terms of leadership management qualities, but my fear is that my knowlege base is that of two years and may hinder my ability to be a good resource to the team. I have been offered a charge position on a med tele unit, but dont want to set myself up for failure. Should i take this opportunity or pass?

Is turning dying patients comfort care or not?
I work on an acute medical floor and I had a patient who was on comfort care, pretty close to death, and a two week old hip surgical site from a recent fall. There was a debate whether or not to turn the patient on the basis of pain vs risk of skin break down. Would you still turn the patient knowing this would cause more pain or leave the patient be?

Is nursing worth it??
Another option besides nursing if you are interested in healthcare on a public level or global level is to pursue a degree in public health. It is more in the business admin side where you would work in creating health policies. If you enjoy working one on one with people and making a difference on that type of scale then nursing is for you. You might just need to take some time out for yourself, go travel the world, and approach nursing when your mindset is right. The reason why so many nursing students get weeded out of the BSN program because it is a very challenging program workload wise and mentally. Basically you can't be lazy and you can't make work a priority while in nursing school. I had to quit work in my 2nd year of nursing just to get by. Hope that helps.

5months pregnant. Should I apply to new job?
I am 5 months pregnant and my baby bump is obvious. I work per diem at a small community hospital that is possibly going to close in the near future and I am also getting a lot of cancelled shifts due to low census. I need your advice and opinions if I should search and apply for a new RN position at a different hospital or if I should wait until after mat leave. My concern is if the hospital closes down, I will loose any oppertunity of applying to internal positions. Your opinions and advice are appreciated!

What about moving to more administrative positions such as CNL, Nurse Educator, or infection control. You can also try occupational health. Hope that helps.

should i stay or should i go
If you are not taking breaks, its either you work on a poor managed unit or that you cannot time manage very well due to the workload. I suggest re-evaluating why you got into nursing. Was it because you are a caring person who enjoys helping people and making a difference, or is it because of the attraction to money. If its the former, you definately can find a niche in some field that is less caotic. If its because of the money, I think you will be unhappy regardless of whereever you work. Fields of nursing that might suite you would probably be any administrative position such as: nurse recruiter, infection control, nursing supiviser, case management, or community health (travel immunization clinics) or home health nurse where you just travel to one person's house at a time giving injections, changing dressings ect. If the above suggests don't sound appealing, then I suggest a change in career. Try accounting. Good luck.

Do I need to renew my BC RN license if I am working in the US?
I am a Canadian nurse from British Columbia about to work in California on a t4 visa. Do I need to maintain a practicing RN license in BC? I think I may of read somewhere that I need a practicing license to maintain my T4 visa but am not sure. I'd like to know before I fork out 500 dollars to renew. Much appreciated!

Thank you so much for your helpful and informative advice, Juan! I will do that. I think she already knows that my start date is going to be delayed again, but hasn't mentioned it. I'm anxious that they will withdrawl their job offer... what do you think from a legal perspective... can and would they do this?

NCLEX-Fingerprint Card Rejection
You could just do a fingerprint live scan when you get to the US??? Its in their system in a matter of days. Cali will take a month or two anyway to process your fingerprint cards and get the verified. You can do livescan at any UPS store.

TN Visa Requirements
I agree with Silverdragon! This is called dual intent (in the case that your husband is american citizen) Don't tell them you are engaged to an american citizen!!!! as that will red flag you and you will get denied your TN. Also bring with you: Your resume and a copy of any other license that you have in Canada (as you need to be licensed in a province as a RN in order to recieve a TN)

Hi. What country are you from? You have to go to a social security office to get your SSN after you provide them with proof you can work in the US such as a TN, H1b, or green card. If you don't have this, I would suggest putting down your own social security number as they also ask for the city and country where you are from.

CGFNS
They have poor customer service. But from my experience with CGFNS, once you they recieve a document from you, it takes 7-9 business days for it to be put in the computer as recieved and then another 5-7 business days to be reviewed. Make sure that everything you send to CGFNS has a tracking number so you can track it and make sure that every correspondance has your CGFNS ID number on the envelope!!! If you can't find any of the answers on their website, you can email them using their lame online email service. Feel free to msg me for more info as I just completed this process. Took me 2 months!!!

Yes, I have already gone to the border and they said they issue a TN only within a week of the start date. Already worked with an immigration lawyer - they can't do anything about customs, and HR won't change the start date for the job offer letter I think the US are trying to make it harder for foreign workers to get US jobs due to the recession - just my opinion.

SSN
I am a Canadian Nurse. I was issued a California RN license on June 2010 from licensure by examination meaning I took the NCLEX and got my license thereafter. On the application, I put down my Canadian SSN. On the application, it says that its mandatory to put a SSN, but it doesn't indicate anything specific in regards to international applicants. I would email the BON and ask them specifically.

Hi, I am a Canadian citizen who has a job offer with California Sutterhealth on Febuarary 14th. I have all my documents ready to get my TN. Unfortunately, the boarder will not issue the work visa unless 5-7 days of the start date. I need the TN visa to apply for my SSN which may take up to 2 weeks. The HR recruiter says she needs my criminal record check (which requires a SSN to process) before the start date... this also takes 1-2 weeks. Dilemma: 1. Cannot get my SSN without my TN 2. Cannot process pre-hire paperwork like criminal record check without SSN 3. Cannot start job without SSN or pre-hire checks PLEASE HELP! HAS ANYONE ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM??? HR won't change the TN petition letter start date, and doesn't seem cooperative. The only 2 solutions I thought about are 1. They will push back my start date to the next month (orientation only once a month), or they will be nice enough to allow me to start without a SSN (which I doubt).

I'm a Canadian Nurse and I applied for licensure and Nclex exam in California and as I got license without a SSN. I don't know why you wouldn't. In terms of getting a work visa, that is totally different.

TN help/advice for canadian
I am having a problem with the hiring process. I understand that I can only have my TN granted to me within 5 days of my indicated start date. The problem is that 5 days doesn't give me enough time to get my SSN and finish the criminal record check and other pre-hire paperwork in time for the start date. Did you deal with this issue or have any advice? Thanks.

I am sorry that you had to go through this process. You are absolutely right, and this recruiter does not know how to do her job. She absolutely needs to provide a TN letter for you, then you can get a SSN. I am going through a similar process where the recruiter doesn't have all her facts down. If the manager cannot help you, then apply to another hospital that actually knows what they are doing. Good luck.
