Del Mar/Texas A&M program
Through eLine, all the coursework is in modules. For example, there are like 25 modules that make up the foundations in nursing course, which is one of the classes in the first semester. Some modules are short, some are long. You get a grade for each module and then those are averaged to give you the grade for the class. You complete the modules at your own pace. I believe that all of the classes for the first semester have to be completed within 1 year. The format for all of the modules is the same and you complete them in whatever order you choose. After you complete all of the modules for the 3 classes that make up the first semester, you do the clinicals. Then you start in with the modules for the second semester. So if something comes up in your life where you can't do schoolwork for awhile you just pick back up with the modules when you can (keeping in mind that you have to finish each semester within 1 year). This may not be all that clear, but I will try to answer questions if you have more.

Del Mar/Texas A&M program
Hi Nurse explorer - Currently I think Del mar also has start dates in Oct and March, but you may want to verify that. There are people in the program now with me who started in March, but that may change with this grant you mentioned. I did have to take a 2nd chemistry course (organic chem) to apply for Del Mar. I took it this summer and it was hard, but I'm glad I have it over with. This summer, I also took their health skills class that you have to have to apply. You do the book part online and then find someone in your area to help you with the skills checkoff. The skills are stuff like make a bed, take blood pressure, etc. I was already accepted to Deaconess when I found out about eLine. The main reason I went with eLine is because it is so much cheaper and more flexible. But you do have to have all of those prereqs done in advance, which may not be a option for you. let me know if you have any more questions! Amy

Del Mar e-line nursing program
Hi. I just started the eLine program through Del Mar. The website answers alot of the questions. If you have specifics, I can try to answer them. I am excited about the program. It is very organized and seems to be really comprehensive.

online for 1st nursing degree
What else do you know about the program? Is it hard to get in? Do you know anyone who is doing it? It just sounds interesting and I'd like to know more about it.

CCCOnline: Which home school?
I just looked at my bill and it was $561.40 for the micro class. That included a $21.60 instructional program fee. The class is good and with my instructor we do a chapter per week. (So I'm sure in the summer you would have more than 1 chapter per week.) For each chapter we have questions, a lab (that is done on the computer with simulation software), discussion postings and a test. After 3 chapters, there is an exam on those 3 chapters. So there are like 5 exams, I think. I have enjoyed the class and the lab software is very cool. The labs definately take a while to do, but once you get used to the software, they are not too bad. Let me know if you have any other questions. Amy

CCCOnline: Which home school?
I'm taking micro through CCCOnline right now and I went through CCD (Community College of Denver). I have found them to be really easy to work with. Amy

Who will be starting DCN this summer/fall?
Congratulations! We'll all be in it together! Amy

Current DCN students, did you take classes ahead of time?
Lisa - Just wanted to let you know that ccconline is around $130-$140/credit hour. You may have been looking at in state tuition before. That is still, however, alot cheaper than DCN! The classes are good too. I need to call the financial aid people. My husband's company may get sold soon and he should get a lump sum if that happens. So that would definately help pay. I'm sure he would much rather use the money for something more fun, but oh well!!

Current DCN students, did you take classes ahead of time?
Lisa - I talked to Erin last week about a couple of courses I wish to transfer and she got back to me fairly quickly. She just needs the course description for the class. She also told me that she is trying to finalize dates for advisement and registration and may try to send an email out on that this coming week. I am transferring both A&P (which I had already talked to them about before applying) and dev psychology. These were classes I took at my local community college last year in anticipation of attending that school. I am also taking micro and chem through CCConline right now and will transfer those. They took my sociology and english from my other degree, but not the speech class b/c it was regular speech, not interpersonal communications. I am hoping to take nutrition and maybe pharmacology (and interpersonal communications) at my cc here to save money. I keep thinking that I need to start going to someone else with my questions, but Erin seems more than willing and she has been so wonderful, that I keep going through her. Have you talked with the financial aid people at all yet?

Deaconess Scholarships
Have any of you Deaconess students received any financial aid or scholarhips from them? I'm wondering if I should fill out all of the paperwork and apply or just get a home equity loan? Thanks, Amy

Deaconess Question? How many Sessions?
Forgot to say that I did check on the BSN programs in my area (Texas Women's University and University of texas at Arlington) and they will accept any chemistry course as long as it is 4 hrs with a lab. I don't think I'll ever try for BSN as I already have a bachelor's and master's degree, but just in case I wanted to be able to transfer it.

Deaconess Question? How many Sessions?
Mrs Yost, I did sign up for the one starting March 1, so I guess I'll see you in that class! I've had a run of blessings this week b/c my friend is selling me her laptop and they just called from the mother's day out where my younger daughter goes and told me that they have an opening on Fridays so I can drop her off then (in addition to the Tuesdays that she already goes) and have time to study for this extra class!
-
Deaconess Question? How many Sessions?
they will take either class. here is the email erin sent me: the class i have on my sheet for that school is che 111 and it is worth 5 credit hours. i have also just checked with the registrar, and we would also accept credit from the introduction to general chemistry course which is che 011 (i think. it is the first on the master schedule). either one of these classes is acceptable. i'm going to take the intro class b/c i think it will be easier!!
-
Deaconess Question? How many Sessions?
It is che 101.

Deaconess Question? How many Sessions?
Mrs Yost, I talked to deaconess today and they will accept the intro to Chemistry I from ccconline. I went ahead and signed up for the class starting March 1. Amy

I was accEPTED TO DCN for MAY! Happy dance, happy dance!
Hi - I didn't do anything special either. But I do have 2 other degrees that were cum laude, so I'm sure that helped. I think the school is just getting harder to get into because more people are finding out about it. I doubt it will be long before other schools start offering similar programs.

Deaconess Question? How many Sessions?
According to the info the just sent me (2003-2004 catalog), the residency requirement is 28 credit hours of general education and nursing courses, which will be accomplished just with the nursing courses. Has anyone tried to take pharmacology anywhere else?

I was accEPTED TO DCN for MAY! Happy dance, happy dance!
Hi Lisa - I'll be starting in May as well, so we'll be fellow students! I also have 2 small kids, but thankfully no job right now!! I'm trying to figure out how to pay for it as well. I hope I can get some scholarship money or something. We are one of those people that make too much for financial aid, but not enough to pay that hefty bill! I need a laptop too. I know my husband would love it b/c he says I'm always in front of the computer - haha! Looking forward to getting to know you better! Amy

New to Board and Deaconess
Let me know what you find out b/c I have to get started on this as well. Erin told me they had recently hired a clinical liason to assist with the clinicals setup etc, but they didn't know what exactly her duties were going to be. I'm going to call the tenet hospitals in my area to see what they say. Since Deaconess is owned by Tenet, I'm hoping they will be receptive. Is anyone else doing their clinicals at a tenet hospital??

New to Board and Deaconess
I don't have a clinical place as of yet. What they told me was that they would accept 20 students for May and they did not have to have a clinical place yet. Then in the fall they would take 20 with a clinical place already lined up and 20 without a clinical already lined up. That may have changed, but that's the info DCN gave me about a month ago.

New to Board and Deaconess
Mrs. Yost, so the chemistry starting March 1 at ccconline is definately the chemistry DCN will accept? I was going to call them today to verify that. I'm already taking micro through ccconline right now, but I think I'll do the chem just to get it over with so I don't have to worry about it later. Are there any chem classes that you have found that are just 4 hours or all they all 5?
