Future New Grad needs advice about Peds Oncology
I have been a Peds Heme/Onc RN for 3.5years. I absoutly love it! Most Hospitals have Hematology paired with Oncology. You will prob. have to float but other than that you should not have to work on any other floors. As for places that are good, I do not know. Most childrens hosptial that have heme/onc are pretty good.

Education required to be an oncology nurse
You usually just need to be an RN. Once you are hired the hospital will offer a Chemo cert. class. You can usually give chemo once you have passed that class.

-
PPE for empty chemo bags?
Our hosptial we are recommended to use gown and chemo gloves, however it is only required for us to wear chemo gloves. We only wear the chemo gloves or for those of us that are allergic to the latex in them we double glove with regular gloves.

Weekenders Working Weekday Holiday?
I work only Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I have to work 2 minors (more fall on F,S,S so I end up working more by choice, my employer only makes me work two), and I have to work 2 major regardless of where they fall. It can be anoying to have to work during the week but it is not fair to make everyone else work the major Holidays because it does not fall on the weekend. They have familys like us all and would like to be off as well.

interested in oncology?
You can work in the hospital on an inpatient floor or in clinic for outpatient infusions. As long as you use the precautions for giving and handling the chemo you should be fine (when ready to have children). All of my many co-workers have healthy babies.

Pediatric Oncology Question
I was hired as a new grad into Peds Heme/Onc. I don't know if I could do anything else, I love it! There is a journal, Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing. I am not sure how much it is as I receive it as part of being a member of APHON. The journal is geared toward RN's that already are in the field of nursing. The website www.APHON.org is an referance you can use.

Oncology Patient Ratios
I work on a Peds Heme/Onc floor in Florida. We staff 4 to 1 unless we have chemo and higher accuity pts then it is 3 to 1. We also have a BMTU and that is staffed 2 to 1.

CPON exam
I have not set a date again to retake it. I had a ton of meds on mine. I was not expecting that as APHON has a Chemotherapy and Biotherapy cert. which I have. It is not as tough as CPON was though. We do self directed study groups at our hosp. (the last was in sept. though as a group took the test in Oct.) We get CEUs for it. Does your hosp do anything like that?

CPON exam
I am with you. I also took mine today and failed by 3 points. It sucks! As for your question I cannot help you as I live in GA:)

Febrile oncology pt to transfuse or not? Help!!
I am a peds heme/onc nurse and on our floor we would have transfused. We would have looked for other s/s of transfusion reactions. With a platelet count of 5 I would have been worried about that. Did the pt have any s/s of bleeding? Has the pt had blood products before, if so have they had a reaction? (if it was their first time I might have not transfused). Also were they in for fever/neut. Where in their nadir are they?

Is it true that before a facility will hire you, you guys have to sign something that
No, I work in FL and on the licence application there is a box that you can check that states you will be able to help in an emergency and one that states you would not. I checked no however I am on our hospitals emergency response team. As far as individual hospitals go I am not sure. Every year we have signups and there is enough vol. each year to staff the ERT.

Face Masks
She said the social worker from the School for the Deaf and Blind stated that they were made but she did not know where to get them from.

Face Masks
Hey All, I am a Peds BMT nurse and I currently am taking care of a deaf pt. The pt mom said that they make clear masks, however our hospital only carries the yellow and blue "bulldog" masks. I was just currious if anyone out there in a transplant setting has seen or used a clear mask. I am trying to teach my self some sign language but I am sure that it is not very good. It is hard for the pt because people's facial expressions cannot be seen when wearing the mask. Thanks.

What medical shows do you watch?
I love ER and Greys. I have recently become addicted to Nip/Tuck. I cannot wait for the new seson to start for these shows!! I know Nip/Tuck is sept 5.

Is it TRUE SMALL LETTER PASS, BIG LETTER FAIL?
I received a small letter stating I passed.

Question about additional associations
I am a member of APON (Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses). I joined to attend conferences, and I would like to become CPON certified. I have only been working in Peds Heme/Onc for a year so I need a couple more years of experience. They also have relevent newsletters. I guess to answer your question it is to advance my career and to gain extra knowledge.

Question about Pre Reqs..GA
I went to Coastal Georgia Community College. I have looked into GA Southern's Online program. What is good about them is that they will accept my pre-req for valdosta's RN to BSN and I would not have to any more.

Thinking about Ped. Onc.
I believe but not a 100% sure, that there is a peds onc np in CA. One of my co-workers was looking into that degree.
-
Question about Pre Reqs..GA
No I ended up going the ADN route. There is a branch of VSU in our town and my plan was to get my ADN and then do my RN to BSN through VSU, but they closed the RN to BSN part due to lack of Participation so I am now trying to find an online program. VSU states they are going to be starting a online RN to BSN soon but they do not have a date yet. Sorry but I do not know about a tech college being able to transfer.
-
Question about Pre Reqs..GA
The only way to be 100% sure is the ask the college that you will be transfering them to. I took a lot of my classess at a community college and they all transfered to Valdosta State University with no problems.

"walking Report"?
We do walking report at our hosptial. We first get/give report in the report room and then take the oncoming/outgoing nurse to the rooms. We just introduce the nurse for the next shift and do a quick rundown in the room.

CE Hours
What hospital are you going to work for in FL. Most hosptials here (I work in Jacksonville, FL) offer the required CE, and it would be free.
