  5. Yes Leslie......I do agree with you....I had a young man, in his early 40's who died a terrible death of colon Ca.....and this was very hard for me, it was this time of the year too....and when the leaves change it reminds me of him every time.....I left his home crying so many times in the car......he had such horrible symptoms...no matter what I tried... poor guy had a very hard death:crying2: He will always be in my heart....on the night he was dying...his mother called the on call nurse...and asked specifically for me to come.....so I went to do the post mortem care for them....at least he was finally out of pain I am sorry to ramble on...but this helps me somehow.....thanks for listening :kiss
  6. I have been a Hospice Nurse for 5 years now. In our Hospice, we are able to attend the funeral of our patients if we wish. I do not attend every funeral- I find it to be too hard on my spirit.....but if I have a pt that I have become close to, or a family that I felt closer to, I will attend for my own closure. In my heart, I feel that my goodbye has been already said to that pt before they died- because often I am there at the last few hours of life, and I quietly say my goodbyes then..... And as for the subject of the painless, non-suffering deaths- we wish that they could all go that way- but the reality is that there will be some that no matter what we do, or what drugs we use, or spiritual help we get, that will die in pain and suffer......that is the very hardest thing to bear....and to forget. :kiss
  7. Whoops!! Double post- sorry!!!
  8. Congrats Aimee!:balloons: I just got my results yesterday and I passed also!! I did alot better than I thought I would :chuckle
  9. :kiss I am so sorry for your loss- it is so hard to lose a pet.....you did a good thing for your kitty.....at least she didn't have to suffer anymore.

  11. Another thing to watch for is bowel obstruction- esp if she has bowel involvement......I have used Octreotide (sandostatin) injections to decrease the bowel secretions and helps the n/v....Just a thought
  12. Hi Caroline I have been a Hospice Nurse for 5 years, and this is the very best job I have ever had! I am a home care nurse, which means that I see the pt's at home and in the hospitals. I must see everyone once a week, and then prn for any problems. I currently have 14 pt's. At our hospice we have a on-call nurse that does every night and weekends- I work 5 days a week, 8-10 hrs a depending on what crisis there is that day! Our hospice serves 3 counties in New York- and we have grown alot since I started- I have at least 2 admissions a week- and I find that people are being referred earlier which makes a big difference- I hope that this helps! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!! Have a great night :kiss Lucy
  13. I once pulled up to the drive-thru at McDonalds and asked for a large flies and diet coke- to which the guy replied-" Do you want the flies with or without wings?" Whoops!!!:imbar

  18. Sorry Jane- I guess I was off base a little......I am no expert on cancer by any means.....it was just a thought.....I hope things will start to look up for him and I will keep you both in my thoughts... Best Wishes, Lucy;)
  19. Hi Jane- I first would like to say that I am sorry for your husband's suffering....he is very lucky to have you......also I thought that I would put in my two cents for what it's worth....I work as a Hospice nurse, and when I have someone that has a suspected obstruction, and they wish to stay home and out of the hospital....we use a drug called Octreotide(sandostatin) which relieves the pressure and draws the water from the bowel....I have found that it works excellent in the patients that I have had....and it will stop the vomiting. I have used 200 mcg, sq, q8h....so that may be worth a try..... Also...is he not having aggressive tx at this time? If not then Hospice care may be able to help with the symptom control and comfort care..... I will keep you in my prayers and feel free to PM me for anything.....Best Wishes :kiss
  20. Welcome to you both! I hope that you end up loving this job as much as I do - and these boards are a great place to meet some great people..... Cheers! Lucy
  21. Our Hospice only does admissions during the week mostly. If it is a real emergency (the pt is immenently dying and really wants to be home) they will go and do it. We have 3 counties and about 150 patients that they are responsible for so as you said- they don't want to be tied up with that. We also have a back-up on call nurse who is an LPN/RN and she makes visits and does any admissions if they come up. We have alot of admissions on friday's d/t the hospitals want to empty out- and they usually come home with half-assed :angryfire orders- and it's hard to get meds on a friday afternoon.......anyway....we try to do them during the week .....hope that helps!
  22. I currently have 13 patients, 3 of which have been imminently dying for a couple days. I usually do my laptop work at night also. I have alot of comp time but I am not able to take it. I think that 10 patients would be just right.
