Scripps New Grad Training Program
I checked the status of my application on the website and it says applicant review...I don't know whether that is a good thing or a bad thing and I haven't received any news or email regarding an interview. Hoping I still get something from them! Any other new updates??

Kaplan college in San Diego RN program
Start dates or those info sessions they have before you apply? Info sessions are I think weekly. There are three start dates a year. Around the 20th of Jan, the 15th or so of May and then after Labor day in September. I am currently in the program and graduate this Sept so feel free to ask any other questions!

Kaplan college in San Diego RN program
Nope, no questions since I'm already in the program :) and don't need to worry about it. I just wanted to make sure everyone one here was getting correct information on the admission process.

Yeah I would definitely double check with your rep because as recently as this past Septembers term I know of someone who was not accepted due to her urine being too dilute in the drug test results and obviously her tests were done prior to acceptance.

B217 I don't know who your rep was but you absolutely have to do the background screen and drug test prior to admission. That is one if the criteria they use in acceptance. Also I've never heard of their early acceptance period. I'm currently in the program and graduate in Sept 2011.

An LVN is a vocational program not a degree program, so an LVN program at any school would not have credits which you can use to obtain a degree in the future. From what I've heard it is very difficult to find jobs as an LVN. My friend got her LVN license in Aug of last year and still has not found a job. Most hospitals also don't hire LVNs because of their scope of practice is limited. On the other hand, most LTC facilities do use LVNs as med nurses so you would likely work in a facility like that.

Honestly, above all, Kaplan is a for-profit school and a lot of the admissions reps are skeezy and will tell you anything. The admissions dept really has no say on acceptance into the program since selection is done by the director of nursing, they can only inform you on the trend of those who were actually accepted. I don't know how much weight medical experience, a bachelors, or being an alumni is placed on the admissions process, but I'm sure that having either would greatly help your chances since your teas score would be the only thing they would be able to base your possible acceptance on. I'm guessing you'd have to blow the teas out of the water to be considered without any of the other stuff since Kaplan is becoming a very popular option to get a nursing degree. I was accepted on my first try, but I did shell out 4k to do their CNA program ( Crazy I know, but since my husband is in the miltary I was able to get aid to pay for it). I haven't worked as a CNA and have no medical experience whatsoever. I also have a few classmates with degrees in other fields and were accepted with absolutely medical experience as well. I am very happy with my decision to attend kaplan. Once you get in and past admissions it's a whole different world. Kaplans board pass rate is up to 96% and of the teachers I've encountered so far I can definitely tell why. They definitely strive to give you the right knowledge to pass boards and the experience to be a good nurse in the real world.

The RN program is only offered at the San Diego campus. I'm currently in my second semester there. The admissions process is based on a point system so you do not necessarily need 6 months medical experience, but the admissions reps will definitely tell you that or try to make you take some other medical class they offer (PCAT, MA, or CNA) since being an alumni there gives you points as well. Having a bachelors in another field also helps you get in (no medical experience required) and they also look at your teas score (must be in the mid-high 80s).

Nursing School and Child Care
Maybe look for a flexible daycare center in someones home. This is my first semester so my schedule isn't too crazy and I guess I'm lucky (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) to have my clinical on a Saturday in the evening so my husband is able to care for our nine month old daughter. Next semester is going to be hell though, as my schedule is going to be totally random and clinicals will start at 6am, but the expectation of us is to be there at 5:45am and I live about 30 min from most of our clinical sites. To top it off my husband is in the military, and his next duty station is an hour and a half away and he has to be at work by 7am fighting traffic and all! I may be dropping my daughter off at 5am maybe earlier! We have no family in the area to help whatsoever. Luckily my provider is AWESOME! She is more than willing to take her that early...she told me not to expect anything pretty answering the door though! She also told me if there were any last minute changes, just make sure to at least text her when I was around the corner to make sure she could throw some decent clothes on! Lol. Good luck to you though, hope you find a provider or someone who will be flexible with your schedule.

Questions about Kaplan?
Actually, let me clarify my bit on the pre-reqs. There are actually no pre-reqs to get into Kaplans nursing program. The classes I listed are required to go on to your core nursing classes. If you haven't taken any pre-reqs you can take them there. You only need a high TEAS score( they say above 80 is competitive) and either medical experience, a degree, or be an alumni of Kaplan to be eligible to apply.

Questions about Kaplan?
They do collect $20 when they enroll you but it is refundable if you are not accepted. The pre-reqs are English Composition, Sociology, Psych, College Algebra, Anatomy and Physiology. If you've taken a higher Math or Psych or anything they may credit you for those instead. Having your CNA license does not lower thr cost of your tuition but it can definitely improve your chances of being accepted especially if you've worked as a CNA already. The cost does include books, equipment, uniforms, and insurance. The next cohort starts in May but unfortunately I don't know the application deadline. If you're interested you might want to inquire soon cuz you'll also need to take the TEAS and Kaplan only offers it twice a month or you can take it at SDSU for almost double the price. I started Kaplan just last week and am happy with my decision. It is an accelerated program so you do have to be extremely dedicated and know that this is truly what you want! Good luck to you!

Just a clarification to liberty bells post...spouses are not entitled to BAH while the service member is still on active duty. Don't want to get anyone's hopes up with that one.

As far as vocational schools offering an RN program, look up Unitek in Fremont. I've been hearing a lot about it recently and I looked and it us recognized by the CA BRN. They have a 2 step ADN Program where it looks like they make you go through their LVN Program first, which seems kinda shady but if you're interested in getting your RN quick you gotta do what you gotta do right? Also, I don't know if you know but City College in SF is lottery not waitlist so you might wanna check them out.

Kaplan San Diego ADN Jan 2010
I've also heard others say in previous threads that they would not be accepted if they'd done most of their pre-reqs, but as I am starting in two weeks I know that just isn't the case. It may have once been an admissions tactic to get you to take another course there so you'd get alumni points. The only pre-req class I will be taking is a & p I since they credited my physio class. I'm already going to start the core nursing classes and will be going to clinicals this semester. I'm sure you have an excellent chance of getting in, especially the bridge program, since you are already an LVN and have a good TEAS score

Mareeh77 did you say you get one week off between semesters? How long are semesters anyways? I start Kaplan with Emilynn09 this Jan, and I too have gotten really vague answers especially from my admissions rep.

Nursing School with a 6 month old?
So I'm starting an accelerated nursing program this January, and I'm super excited but scared at the same time! I have a six month old and no close family or friends I can rely on for help. Am I completely insane and setting myself up for failure? Any words of wisdom from anyone who's gone through nursing school with an infant?

I was told your medical experience needs to be within the past 2 years. I was also told that if you weren't accepted into the program you'd have to redo your background and drug screen. I'm not sure if that applies to your TEAS scores also, so I would make sure so you don't miss out and not have your package ready.

Kaplan San Diego 2010 RN Program
when are you scheduling your meeting with the DON? I wonder what it's all about? Oh and did your letter say conditional? Does that mean the DON can say nevermind I lied, you aren't accepted? Hopefully, it just refers to the background and drug screen which I already know I passed lol.

maybe call your advisor to "check on the status of your application" so your not playing the waiting game. when i would call before just to ask questions, i was told that everyone is busy and that they're short staffed and what not. just call, it won't hurt to try and find out for yourself. good luck to you guys!

Kaplan college in San Diego RN program
I didn't do too wonderful on the TEAS, I got an 83%. I blame it on my then 4 month old who only let me get in about 30 minutes of studying in a span of about 4 days! I didn't have any medical experience but I am a Kaplan alumni, I took their CNA class last Nov. I wish you guys the best of luck, hope you guys get the acceptance call soon!

Kaplan San Diego ADN Jan 2010
yeah that'd be freakin lame if we have to take algebra. i haven't taken a real math class in like 8 years! yes i said it stats isn't real math lol. you should really get on your hubby about passing his GI Bill to you, cuz it's not like he loses it if he does. he can still use whatever funds are left, or pass it on to your kids in the future. it's kinda tricky how they pay it out, my hubby did some extensive research! basically, the new GI Bill is $80k but they will only pay tuition based on the highest state university's tuition in the state of the school you're going to attend. UC something or other is like $250/ unit so that's all the VA will pay. if i only have to take the two pre reqs, i think we calculated we'd have to come up $20k out of pocket (i don't remember if that includes the myCAA $6k)...which is hell of a lot better than $50k! That still leaves like $50k for your hubby to use. Plus you get E5 BAH every month and some other money for books and tutoring. You can do some research on the VA website also. my husband is in the Navy, but he's a corpsman so he's been with the Marines before and got attached to a Marine unit in '07 and got deployed to Iraq. He's at Balboa for now and we bought a house in Eastlake last year. I'm glad that we met on here too! I was kind of just a lurker on here for awhile and didn't actually register until I got accepted! yeah first day won't be so awkward now that we at least know one person!
