  1. I am so sorry you are having this difficulty. I do not think it is fair for your employer to put such pressure on you for staying later. When I was a new grad on a med-surg floor, we typically has 8 patients. I have always been great with time management and usually didnt stay late, but it was EXTREMELY common for newer nurses to end up staying 1-2 hrs after their shift EVERY shift to chart. From what I know, they were not disciplined for having to stay. I understand every facility is different, but that really sounds ridiculous. Also, colostomy bags leak, even when put in place by certified ostomy nurses. It happens. If you dont feel like you are being given the support you need, then I would take the other job. Dont feel disappointed in yourself. It really takes time to settle in as a new nurse. Best of luck to you!
  2. So then the doctor you refer to is letting his patients make the decision based on risk benefit...isnt that what a provider is supposed to do ethically, isnt that what patient centered care is? When you listen to the drug commercials on television and they list the possible side effects to medications, do you think it makes patients more or less inclined to ask for them? Informed consent is one thing, scare tactics are another. I am not sure which you are speaking. I never, ever said I thought the flu shot was harmful, and I dont know how words are being twisted. 1) the flu shot can be, and is, beneficial. I personally do not feel it is effective enough based on what the CDC states for me personally to get it UNLESS i am required to do so. THAT is my choice. 2) I would never talk a patient out if getting vaccinated, or any other treatment. If a patient directly asked me the statistics on the flu shot, I would show them the stats from the CDC, and advise them as per the CDC is it highly recommended. Period. I would never advise otherwise unless the recommendations changed. No doctor or any provider should be hiding information on the risk vs. benefit of a procedure.
  3. Again, I have never misinformed anyone about the flu shot.
  4. I agree with you as well. I honestly think the biggest fault I find is in the way it is marketed. patients should be aware of the statistics on how effective it may be. some people actually think it is almost fully protective, and then when they get the flu, they think they got it from the vaccine, which isn't the case.
  5. Absolutely. In fact, I think autism and the vaccine debate was a hot topic when my kids were small and they were vaccinated. I never even thought about if it was mandatory or not, wasn't an issue for me.
  6. If your referring to me, i never said i was anti-vaccine. My children are up to date on all of their vaccines. I am required to receive a round of vaccines again for employment purposes in the future even though I show immunity for things such as MMR and that's fine. I routinely give patients their flu shots. I have never said to any of those patients "hey, would you like to know how I feel about the flu shot?" I love science and have always excelled in it. My husband has never gotten the flu shot by his own choice. If tomorrow he decided to get it, well good for him. I will be required to get it next year, and that's fine.
  7. Yes I understand this. However the effectiveness of the flu vaccine vs some others are quite different, which is why I feel the way I do for for my own vaccination choices.
  8. If you noticed, I stated I don't spread my opinion . Cursing is classy.
  9. Show me the statistics that say the flu vaccine is 100% effective. And it is opinion. It's my opinion that the flu vaccine is not worth getting if I am not asked by an employer to do so.
  10. And that is your choice. What you are not getting is I have the right to make my own choices. It is amazing how part of this thread discussed people forcing their opinions down the throats of others. I voiced my opinion and my own personal choices and pretty much got attacked for it. It seems you are angry/upset at how I feel about the vaccine. I stated already I do not voice my opinion on any vaccine to patients. So why you feel so heated about what vaccines I choose for myself or my family makes no sense.
  11. And I respect YOUR views, opinion, beliefs. Aren't nurses supposed to respect the autonomy of others? So shouldn't you respect mine?
  12. Wow you are really pushing the issue. It is your opinion.
  13. Our views differ. You can choose that vaccine for your kids, I wouldnt.
  14. I voiced my opinion. That's it. Your opinion isn't the same as mine. We agree to disagree.
  15. If its slow progressing why the sense of urgency?
  16. Read post above. Sorry , still not sold on the HPV vaccine. The effectiveness of the flu vaccine is a shot in the dark because it's a guessing game as to what strain is going around. I have gotten the flu the same year as getting the vaccine, so that year it wasn't effective. So it did nothing for the patients I took care of when I was contagious before I knew I had it. I am immune to certain strains. Learned that last year's after taking care of 3 family members who had it, and I never got sick. Some vaccines have their place, some do not. You have your opinion, I have mine. If a job I have requires it, yes I'll get it. Other than that I wont.
  17. I had HPV and severe cervical dysplasia that was diagnosed while I was pregnant. I opted to wait until after delivery to have it removed because of risk of miscarriage. As I recall, my Dr stated cervical dysplasia and cancer is slow progressing. So if that is the case, why a vaccine that causes a belief that it's fast progressing?
  18. I am not anti vaccine at all, but I do really question the validity of pushing things such as the flu vaccine and gardasil. The flu vaccine effectiveness is usually under 50%, and the powers that be push it like its eradicating the flu altogether. I agree those that are elderly and at high risk for complications should receive it, but that's it. As far as gardasil is concerned, how about promote regular exams and PAP's by a gynecologist? Vaccines such as MMR and others are necessary, but I feel as if the flu vaccine and gardasil is more about making money. And no, I do not voice my personal beliefs to patients.
  19. Firstly, I think it depends on where you go for your BSN. I took an advanced assessment course and a genetics course. Also, my bachelor's degree is really where we got into evidence based practice, which does apply to clinical practice. How are you going to know which methods work best for your patient? You mentioned communication, but communication amongst family members and patients is huge in nursing. I agree that APA formatting is a headache, but its the way things are done. Learning to sift through research to advance nursing and other disciplines does actually matter. What I learned in my BSN curriculum really helped me grow as a nurse. I am sorry yours didnt.
  20. My husband, who is in law enforcement, agrees the officer is wrong. He felt that the blood draw was to perhaps protect the victim from the family of the person fleeing the police. He said as crazy as it sounds, they could be looking for a lawsuit against the patient Wubbles was protecting and looking for fault at him. Sounds crazy was I wouldnt be surprised in our litigious society.
  21. You dont have the right to kill a cop. In that case, which was in the 1890's, the defendant was hit over the head and shot. What a bunch of crap. Yeah go ahead and kill a cop...they are already looking to make it a crime punishable with the death penalty. And I guarantee that most people, criminals included, would consider their arrest "unlawful". The Common-Law Right to Resist, at Least According to Contitution.org | ExCop-Lawyer
  22. Very mature to start slinging insults. You didn't state "they wanted " , you stated "they want" . Maybe you should have clarified.
  23. I was referring to the other posters comment that insinuated that resisting arrest was a good idea in general. And yes, he was quite aggressive with her. I am not defending his actions at all. But planting the seed in people's minds that it is a good idea to resist arrest is not wise.
