New Grad Terrors
i also feel the same way.. not exactly a new grad. worked in psych for a year after i graduated and just a got a job in medsurg.. kind of feel out-of-place, doubting myself if i can survive in medsurg, but just trying to hang in there. in two weeks, i will be on my own and i'm panicking if i can get my patients safe through my shift. like u, i put pressure on myself to be perfect when i get off orientation but that is just impossible, i just dont to make a fool out of myself. did well in school but floor is very tough. putting the pieces together and making the patient's condition make sense is the hardest part, esp when u havent experienced or have been exposed to it before. for the seasoned nurses, what do you recommend for us transitioners and new grads to focus on while we are on our first months in medsurg?

Rethinking nursing
it's almost a year since i've been a nurse, still considered "new grad". i am rethinking if nursing is the right career path for me. to be honest, i am highly insecure, depressed that i still dont have a decent job. i am thankful that i have my psych rn job and i am going through a free new grad program offered in a university, now precepting in a medsurg floor. i am just discouraged and depressed if i'm even good enough to be a nurse. i just feel inadequate when i'm on the floor, although i'm more than eager to learn. i put too much pressure on myself to do great so i can get a position. i just dont know anymore if what im doing right now will even pay off. i had a lot of interviews before but unfortunately, interviews are my weakness, because i am overeager to get a job. right now, i just convince myself everyday to continue and hope for the best. but really i feel like a failure. thanks for listening guys!

wanting something more- yet can't get out
so i am also a new grad, "Old New grad", got my first job in psych nursing, just because it was the first one that was offered to me after a long year-and-a-half spinning like my head-cut-off, looking for a job in medsurg... did literally everything, from job fairs, to referrals, to tens of hours of CEs and certifications, to non-profits to help me with resume and interviews, whole ten yards.. but no success.. not so much happy with psych nursing, been here 6 months, and want to get out asap, as all of u might know, it is very easy to be pigeon holed in this field, plus no vertical movement, not a lot of options when u start in psych.. so i am starting to look again for a chance to work in medsurg.. i have iv therapy cert which i dont get to use, acls, and next month, will take a chemo provider course.. i know i have the transferrable skills, i work hard, and i am malleable.. does anybody have an idea on how to transfer from psych to medsurg?

Warning to New Grads
i have the same exact story. I am taking care of 30 pts in a snf, and all i do is pass meds non stop, no time for breaks because if you do, u'll be behind, no matter how good u r at time management. corporations dont wanna pay overtime, and if u clock out late, then ur in trouble. the DON doesnt care about you (interesting, being that she is a nurse herself), and will pin all the responsibilities to you- added work but no way of supporting you so u can do ur job right and timely, which means that there are more risk for error. as a new grad and being turned down by hospitals i've applied to, i have a mixture of feelings of inadequacy, incompetency, and frustration. i know i want to do the best job that i can, but i just feel so lost and not really ready- like you said- being hit hard by all these responsibilities, and worst of all, in a snf, ur own ur own, so how do u ask somebody to verify a nsg judgment? i want to give up and quit on myself because i dont know if i can do this and i am so afraid of losing my license. any advice? what shoudl i do?

Do I Shut Up And Stay, Or Run????
omg.. i feel the same way..i'm a new grad and i've been working at a snf for 7 weeks now as on-call. i know it is understandable that as new grads, we are just learning. but i cant help but be frustrated about the same things that are going on in ur job qaqueen. i think a nurse can only be as good as the facility lets them. unfortunately, our present jobs dont do that. because i am a new grad, i feel so frustrated that i am not good at what i do. i do try my best but it just irks me to think that one little thing can get u in trouble and ruin ur license and ur life, no matter how much CYA u do. often times, i feel inadequate and i do expect more of myself. everytime i get home, i wanna beat myself up because i could have done better and i should have known. but what can u do when ur own ur own in a snf where u have 30 pts? what do i have to do now?
