New Grad Terrors
Thank you everyone for your input and encouragement. I understand why I got the incident report though. I gave her all the bowel prep and knew she had been getting up to the bathroom, but just assumed she was pooping enough and didn't verify with the CNA. I should of and called the Dr for an enema if it wasn't enough. Normally all the bowel prep is sufficient though. There was inadequate staffing and I was so insanely busy, but I took responsibility for it. I did talk to my manager though and told her that it will be really tough to do my job to the best of my ability with that kind of staffing. She agreed and said she will be changing things up a bit. The people I work with and my boss are great. I'm blessed in that way. I know I will get better at things. I just am not sure hospital nursing is for me at this point!

New Grad Terrors
I graduated nursing school last May and was lucky enough to get my first job. I started August 1st so I have been at it for a little over 3 months. I got off orientation 2 weeks ago so am now on my own with no preceptor. I am having terrible anxiety. When I walk into work I feel like throwing up. I pray like crazy before every shift. I cry before, during (in the bathroom), and after work sometimes. When I try to sleep my eyes will shoot open and I'll wake up in a panic thinking I missed something. I have nightmares about my patient's CBGs being all messed up. I wake up wondering if I missed something. I'm beginning to think I'm crazy and need to be on meds or something. Today I started to think that what I thought was my calling to be a nurse is wrong. I love people, I love serving, I love working 3 days a week, I love that someday when I have a family I'll be able to be home with my kids a lot, I love holding a person's hand when they are scared and need someone to just listen. I just want to help my patients. I've already had 1 incident report written on me in my second week off orientation for my patient not being cleared out enough before her colonoscopy and they couldn't do it. I felt so awful. I tried so hard that night. It was me and my charge nurse with 12 patients and it was all I could do to make it through the night. I'm just terrified to even go into work. I feel like I have such a scary power in my hands dealing with people's lives. I graduated high school as the valedictorian, worked my way through college, volunteered, and finished college with over a 3.9 GPA. I have never given up on anything, but this whole thing is a lot different than going to school. I can do school.... this I'm not so sure about anymore. Anyone else feel this way as a new grad?

Nursing to Osteopathy?
So I just graduated nursing school and got my first job (yay!). I LOVE nursing and don't plan on leaving the profession any time soon, but have also always been really interested in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. I heard rumors of an Osteopathic school that is for nurses going into Osteopathy and gives you credits toward the degree for being a nurse. Anyone ever hear of that? Definitely not sure if I'm even gonna go that route. Just looking at life options right now.

New Grad Nurse. What should I do?
So I just started my first job as an RN. I graduated nursing school with my bachelors in May and was lucky enough to find a job in Oregon. I worked my third shift last night and it was awful. I felt like I didn't know anything at all and that all my schooling had taught me nothing. In the middle of the shift I literally felt like going into the bathroom and crying. It was so stressful and hectic that I didn't feel like I was able to focus at times. Is this normal? Are things going to start clicking? My preceptor is nice and encouraging, but there were 10 high acuity patients with just her and one other nurse. She actually managed to tell me I did a good job, but I think she felt bad for me. I've wanted to be a nurse since I was 5, but I don't want my dumbness to hurt anyone. I try to care for and love all my patients and just want the best for them. I have to go back in tonight and feel like I'm going to throw up.

UCH Interview...What are my chances?
Yes, they sent me an e-mail offering me the job. However, I'm actually going to be taking a different job in Oregon so I will be turning the offer down. Good for someone else though! :-) I don't know why they are doing e-mails. It seems kind of impersonal. The recruiter said to e-mail her back to set up an appointment to talk to her about the job tomorrow.

Difficult Interview Questions
I'm going through interview questions and having a hard time answering some of them. Any help would be great. I wouldn't use the answers in the interview. Sometimes just hearing other people's experiences sparks my own memories. Thank you! Tell me about a time when you: 1) Were very effective in your problem-solving ability. (I'm sure I have many of these, but I think I'm reading into it too much) 2) Utilized your leadership ability to gain support for what initially had been strong opposition 3) Identified potential problems and resolved the situation before the problems became serious. 4) Found it necessary to tactfully but forcefully say things others did not want to hear. 5) Had to make an important decision quickly even though you did not have all the information you wanted. 6) Had to make a decision you knew would be unpopular. 7) Didn't handle a stressful situation very well.

Quick Decision Making Example?

Quick Decision Making Example?
Hey everyone! I wanted to ask for an example of when you had to make a quick clinical decision. What was the circumstance? How did you handle it? What were the results? Thank you!

UCH Interview...What are my chances?
I have an interview on the 6th. I am trying not to get my hopes up, but I would really love to be in this residency program. From what I hear it's amazing. I wish I could talk to someone who is in it now and see what they think of it. I know they get a huge number of applicants. Does anyone know how many people they interview? I am interviewing for a med-surg position, probably in general surgery.
