Anyone applying to the UFL Fall 2013 BSN-DNP program
Congrats @FLDNP! @keisha e : Have you heard anything from Florida today? Did you get an acceptance/denial letter? I've tried emailing and calling to no avail. Still waiting, which I don't take as a good sign.

Wright-Patterson or VA in Dayton, OH
I am stationed at WPAFB right now as a RN. From what I've heard, it is exceedingly hard to get a RN position as a civilian locally. A lot of hiring freezes. A RN who got a position at WPAFB hospital (after about a year of trying) said she was picked from 30ish previous applications to work float for a downtown hospital before her acceptance to WPAFB. Got a call every morning at 0545 telling her if she was needed and on what floor, she said it was brutal. Only job that was taking applicants though. I have no idea how the job outlook is for the VA hospital. Let me know if you hear something different! Just wanted to give you a heads up not to expect a job right away.

Air Force Nursing Bonus, Student Loan Repayment
Flipper911, Yes, the active duty member gets 100% dental coverage. Dependents do not. You'll just make an appt. when you get to your duty station for an initial (xrays, exam, cleaning). From there they will make further appts to take care of more needs (like crowns, cavities, wisdom teeth removal, etc.). You will have a yearly dental appt. after that (but sooner if you have a dental emergency or need same day care...i.e. tooth pains).

How many days should we plan on wearing civies when we arrive at COT? I'm guessing TD0 and TD1 but do we wear them past those days? Thanks for any input!

Question about NTP program
The Wright-Pat NTP begins the 12th of April and we graduate COT on the 9th of April. Since you have your orders, it should have a RNLTD on it that informs you of when you will begin your NTP TDY. Also, it should have the end date and then the date you are required to get to your duty station by.

Question about NTP program
nursemel09, I am going to Wright-Pat for NTP and then staying on for my assignment. Can't believe we only have about 5 weeks left!
-
Pay at COT
The E5 pay is only for those attending BOT. They do not get commissioned until the end of their 12 week course. Since we get our commission before we enter COT we are paid at that rank. We will be paid from 9 March on...so it will be a partial month.

Question about NTP program
Congrats on getting your official orders! The major in charge of my NTP location sent an email out last week informing us about the program and what to expect. We also received a welcome package in the mail. I would assume you would be receiving the same so keep an eye out. In our case (might be different for each location), the major made reservations for us in the VOQ. If we are staying on at the base as permanent party and had accomodations already set up then we could cancel the reservations. Also, if we were bringing our family we could transfer our reservations to a TLF unit. If you have not heard from your NTP location by the end of next week, I would contact your recruiter. At least you have your orders! I commission Monday and then I should get my orders 2-3 weeks after that. It'll be busy the last 2 weeks before I leave trying to get everything ready as I am not authorized to come back after COT due to NTP.

Duty Stations
For me, I put down the 5 bases that my husband (who is AD) and I could get together. We ended up getting our 3rd choice of Wright-Pat.

Bonus's Taxed
No, it will be taxed 27% for federal and 0% for state. I too live in TX, gotta love no state tax! Once in the military you will start out with TX for your legal state of residence no matter where you move to. You can keep that as your state of legal residence your entire time you serve or you can change it to another state where you PCS.

In AF nursing, no differential pay in hospital, right?
"On base you turn over your entire housing allowance and you get no difference - trust me. That's only true if you live off base" This is not techinically true. It depends on what base you are located on. Some military bases are currently still going through the military to privatized housing. Also, some bases with old houses taken over by privatized companies are still going through their 1 year estimation period for utilities. Each base is different. I'm currently living in the old "government housing" taken over by a privatized company. My house is located on the base and we are currently going through our 1 year estimation period. So, yes, during this period 100% of the BAH is taken for rent. But starting next year we will get that 110% deduction to start paying our own utilities. It should also be known that for O1's the BAH is based on apartment/townhome rent payments. Some areas of the nation you might be able to rent or pay a mortgage on a house with your BAH amount, other areas it would be impossible to find a decent house for 4 dependents and a spouse with your BAH rate. It's just the truth. Again, look at the website previously given out to get an idea of what you would receive for BAH at the locations you will be putting down on your application. Then look at local housing and see what you could get for that amount.

In AF nursing, no differential pay in hospital, right?
ksk33, For clarification of what you would receive for pay, just in case you are confused: Base pay is based on rank and time in service. BAH is based on assigned location and rank. Also, there is a w/o dependent rate and a with dependent rate. Regardless of how many dependents you have everyone at the assigned location with the same rank receives the same with dependent rate. So for your situation with a spouse and 4 dependents, you will get the same with dependent BAH rate that someone of your same rank with just their spouse and/or 1 dependent would receive. This might seem unfair to some but the quote I've heard before of "the military doesn't pay for you to keep having dependents" holds true. Keep in mind though that if you were to reside in military housing you would be given a 4 bedroom house to live in (most likely but it would depend on the age and gender differences among your children...you could end up only being eligible for a 3 bedroom). Depending on where you were stationed, most bases have nice new privatized housing built within the last 1-8 years. Your rent for the military house would be your BAH minus 110% of their assigned utility estimate for usage in that specific floor plan. This 110% deducted from your rent amount is used to pay your electricity and such. The military does this so that their occupants will try and conserve energy. So some months you might bank some of that money and other months you might have to pay out of pocket. BAS is the same rate for all officers. Hopefully this helps clarify any questions you have regarding military pay.

In AF nursing, no differential pay in hospital, right?
No there is not. Base pay is based on time in service and time in grade for everyone in the Air Force. Nurses do not get shift differential...I'd say about half the jobs in the Air Force work 12 hour shifts, usually rotating every 4 or 6 months from days to nights. Each base is different on how they work shifts so it's best to find out from someone currently working at the hospital you will be assigned to.

Mar09 COT - Questions PLEASE
Do we need to purchase a camelback before going to COT? If so, is there a specific type, color, etc. they require?

COT/Stationing Assignments from November Boards!!!!
SpookyCat, I am jealous! That is the assignment I wanted. I have heard wonderful things about Elmendorf AFB. I do not know anything about the hospital there. However, the base and the area are great places to live. Especially if you are into outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, camping, fishing, etc. Some of my neighbors just moved to my current base from Alaska and had only praises about it. Count yourself lucky to get that assignment. Take advantage of the wonderful opportunities in the area during your three to four year stint there. If you end up not liking the base, you WILL move after three to four years. It'll go by faster than you think. I know some hospital personnel are able to TDY to remote villages all over Alaska (in a group) to provide medical care. Maybe you can try to get on one of these teams during your time at Elmendorf. That would be a great experience. Most importantly, you made it into the Air Force Nurse Corps!!!!

AF Nov Board Notifications
Thanks LTACRN for starting the Facebook page, I've asked to join the group and look forward to "meeting" others who will be in our COT class.

COT class 10-02
UTstudent, When you get your orders, there will be a number on it for TMO. You will call them and they will purchase your tickets. (so the military does buy them to answer your question). If you purchase your own tickets you will only be reimbursed the rate the military would have paid for the ticket. This reimbursement would be paid to you once you arrived at your duty station and filed your PCS with TDY enroute voucher. Hope this information helps!

COT class 10-03

Just Got the Call
Congratulations!!! Yesterday my recruiter told me that the assignments from the Nov boards are trickling in. Hopefully I will hear something today as I am eagerly hoping to leave in 8.5 weeks for the March COT. Can't wait to hear where everyone else will be going!

california air force november board results
I'm not in California, I'm in Texas but the same thing is happening here. I talked to my recruiter earlier today and he said AFPC is getting them out to the recruiters as they are completing them. My recruiter had only gotten 1 out of 4 accepted applicants COT and assignment information. Hang in there! Hopefully by the end of the week we will know something.
