Yes, the Orthopedic patient is a 'clean' surgical patient, which I prefer. The other surgical patients with the bellies and the bile just don't compare, in my opinion. There is always so much to learn and understand about the mechanics of the musculoskeletal system that I find so interesting!

Yes, ONC. I have been an active Orthopedic staff RN almost my whole career. I just love everything about it. I love the fast pace of a surgical floor, always interesting. Seeing the patients from the acute phase after surgery with all of the challenges, through to discharge, is very gratifying. Usually these patients have a positive outcome. I like the patient population with their elective surgeries then the traumas that come through. It's hard work but I have no problems with that, I believe it has kept me strong, really. I recently became Med/Surg certified too, just because it made the most sense to go along with Orthopedic patients and now the General Surgery patients on my unit, as they all have comorbidities. Also Med/Surg is a definite specialty and being certified in that makes sense for all patient populations. I also wanted to make peace with myself and validate that although I've done mostly Ortho it does not mean that I am not well rounded by any means. There has been very little I haven't been exposed to being an Ortho nurse, it's just a matter of degree. My hospital restructured unfortunately, and now we have a general post op unit comprised of Ortho and General Surgery patients. Some nurses just don't 'get' the Ortho patient and their particular needs etc... We try to separate the Ortho as best as possible. I like the general surgery patients too, as I like the acute post op phase in any patient, but my niche is definitely Orthopedic.

    ONC advice

I studied the Ortho Core Curriculum cover to cover and focused on key points. I had a cd of some practice questions too. I would say it is just a matter of good old fashioned studying, committing to memory as much as possible, while trying to understand what you commit to memory. The test has detailed questions and enough common sense questions to be balanced. It is no piece of cake either. I am Ortho and Med/Surg certified and both tests were equally difficult in their own subject matter. It is the kind of exam that tests your overall knowlege of the specialty intermixed with nursing judgement type questions. It definitely takes studying though, no easy shortcuts, as you must know the information enough to eliminate the obvious wrong answers on the multiple choice questions. Just hit the books! Good luck!

[Originally posted by: CrunchRN;3881908] """"""I couldn't afford to jeapordize my job so I understand how some feel. If I felt it was HIGH risk for me then I would be active about mounting a protest.""""""" Okay then, like I said, you are in a very safe position to be active now to help fight the good fight and defend personal freedoms and choice. If you see others who are mounting a protest, as you say you would do for yourself, then why not speak up at work in their defense? You are in a good position to do that, those nurses taking a stand, by refusing the vaccine, are fighting very hard on so many levels. What if down the road something else gets mandated, health related, that has to do with your body, that makes no sense to you personally? You must see the bigger picture because as you protect others' beliefs, even if they are not in alignment with your own, you are ultimately protecting yourself and rights in the long run.

What do you mean all talk no action? We who refuse the mandate are taking a stand and being quite active by refusing the vaccine!! We are refusing to be vaccinated in spite of the coercion and being socially ostracized by having to wear masks or at worst, being fired for refusing. You call that not willing to do anything? The passive-aggressive mentality is coming from the nurses, who seem to be in the majority, who take the vaccine yet do not believe in a mandate, but say nothing for the minority who are fighting for their rights! How can you even think we are the passive ones? It takes great courage to go against the grain and take a stand in spite of the majority mindset. It takes great courage to be vocal and go against your employer's wishes. What else do you want the nurses to do? We are refusing the vaccine. They say we have a choice to refuse but then must wear a mask or not work. The worst scenarios are no vaccine no employment. That is not a choice. If we all gave in and took the vaccine in spite of personal objection, that would be passive and weak. If you took the vaccine but don't think others should be forced, then you are in that enviable position to make a change and speak for the minority who are pushed up against a wall. You have it backwards as to which group is being passive-aggressive!

The vaccines in question should be intended for an individual's protection against a particular strain of the flu, if that is what they believe to be true by their research. My research tells me otherwise. For my health, I believe the risks outweigh the benefits. The problem with those being for a mandate is the truth about the intention of the vaccine is getting warped. Instead of promoting it vehemently to those who believe it is a personal protection, it is being forced on those who believe otherwise. Then it is being forced by media and corporations and drug companies by fear mongering. Eluding to the 'unvaccinated' as the vectors is part of the propaganda. That part of the argument gets to the scare tactics and further outrages logical thinking people. My body is my temple, not your temple. If you want to enforce the vaccine, do so with those who want it based on their own personal health decision. According to the arguments now, it is the unvaccinated as the root source of all the illness. This is insane. The viruses have been here as long as the cockroach. Trust me, when humankind is gone, the bacteria and viruses will probably be the sole inhabitants of this planet. Another dangerous turn is we are at the begining of turning neighbor against neighbor by fear. We the people should expend our energy in fighting the budding tyranny. We need to look beyond this and ask ourselves what forcing a vaccine really means in the long run as it pertains to our founding fathers vision for this country. You have to entertain slippery slope arguments to see the forest beyond the trees. Look at the bigger picture and stop turning on your fellow man, your fellow nurse.

I will say this again, you are taking my sheep analogy to the extreme. It is ridiculous. Your examples have nothing to do with this particular issue and don't make for a good argument as it relates to this flu controversy. It takes courage for those of us who continue to stand up for what we believe is right in spite of the social and peer pressure to get vaccinated. It's always easier to cave in and go along with the flow. Nobody chooses to swim upstream except if it means they will survive. The problem with society now is everyone wants to be right, don't they? Nobody wants to step back and really hear what the other has to say. The situation happening now arose from one side forcing their agenda on the other despite valid questions of concern and protest. It takes more courage to go against the grain, go against your employer and stray away from the pack. We do because conviction is always a good motivator. Those who want to be vaccinated, choose that path, it's your destiny. If you get your vaccine, be happy as you are doing what you feel is best for you health. Why some of you can't, even for a moment, say the same for the rest of us? We choose what we believe is best for our health and that should be respected.

Yes, I remember when I posted about the yellow star of David and made comparisons to that, how there was such offense taken by one of the pro-mandaters. I was referring to the unvaccinated possibly having to wear masks. I believe it is a fair analogy. Sometimes the truth can hurt.

Look, You can take my sheep analogy to the extreme, ad nauseum. I think the zealout proponents for MANDATORY vaccinations are looking at this backwards. The TB analogy is a bit different as there is no vaccine for TB is there? So, the only way to contain it is to treat the positive person. As the earlier poster stated, if you have your vaccine then you are protected, it's the unvaccinated that are at risk. So, if everyone that feels so fearful and just know the sky is falling down, then it is their responsibility to CHOOSE to vaccinate themselves. The fact that a person is not vaccinated does not make them a vector for the virus. However, that is the argument beeing implanted in the brainwashed to spew out their agenda. The government wants to use fear tactics to control the masses. Also, funny how many of the opponents of 'big government' are so readily complying with this flu mandate based on that illogic. I would think those that are afraid of 'big government' control would vehemently oppose the mandate. They are slowly indoctrinating us. Another thing, one cannot possibly be vaccinated for all the flu viruses out there as there are many strains. There is no guarantee and you want mandated yearly vaccines? At least my childhood vaccines came to an end. Again I say, if you get the vaccine, then you are protected, according to the current arguments. Let the unvaccinated kill off themselves, wouldn't that make you happy, it is their fault then. On that subject though, when did the flu become such a terror? I've had it many times in my life, more so when younger. The next think it will be the common cold.... If people die from the flu or colds that turn into pneumonia etc...due to age, comorbidities, I'm sorry but it happens. We are not meant to live forever and people will die. Someday I could get it and depending on my state of health, it could kill me as could even a cold etc... It is necessary to happen for population control, natural selection. As long as the vaccine is available for the quivering sheep, I do not see their point of agreeing to a mandate for everyone else, as they should feel so protected by vaccinating themselves. But it should be a CHOICE based on that person's knowlege of what their body needs. As far as I'm concerned, speaking for myself only, not the sheep, if I take the vaccine due to pressure, it's either slow suicide or if forced on me, slow homicide. We are in the process of converting our free society to a police state. Wake up to the BIGGER PICTURE. I am an American and it is very American to question. We are the people.

We are losing our rights one step at a time and those that are awake to this must fight the good fight. Those that pooh, pooh conspiracy theories to the point of being close minded are the sheep that so willingly hold out their arms and blat, 'Oh yes Big Brother give me the shot, oh so good'. I'm sorry if I sound cynical. I have posted my thoughts elsewhere on the flu forums against any mandate and don't have the energy to repeat too much. Again I say, it should be a choice. I cannot believe this is even happening. I am living in a nightmarish scenario but yet I am awake. Like the song goes by Aerosmith: 'Something's wrong with the world today, I don't know what it is....Something's wrong with our eyes, we're seeing things in a different way and God knows it ain't His.... It sure ain't no surprise.....We're living on the edge.....

I am afraid of those looking at these mandatory vaccinations with eyes wide shut. Their arguments in favor of giving up fundamental liberties are always backed up by playing on fears. The proponents of mandated vaccines are using scare tactics about the 'unvaccinated' contaminating those on airplanes and any other public place and the 'unvaccinated' being the 'vectors' for spreading the pandemic. They don't want to hear the 'unvaccinated' voice their concerns about violations of civil liberties, basic human rights, choices. They counter that argument saying the 'unvaccinated' are threatening the freedoms of others by spreading disease. The sheep like mentality is a danger. Listen carefully. You who espouse a mandate are in danger of losing your freedoms. It happens one step at a time. Wake up. In other countries there are many mandates that are in place that are blatantly oppressive. China has a one child policy thus abortions are necessary to conform. The religious oppression that mandates birkas and no voice for women in some Muslim countries etc... There are so many other examples. We must question to preserve our freedoms. This is not nonsense or paranoia this is the reality. What will be next? The next mandate could be the guardicel vaccine for females, it's already strongly encouraged. Maybe the pregnant who are poor or uninsured should be mandated to have abortions. Or maybe, all females who are uninsured should have mandated birth control shots. There could be arguments made for that by the sheep that might think it's a good idea. I am telling you the possibilities are endless and that is the slippery slope we have embarked on. Be careful about giving up human rights and freedoms. I love this country because we have always been FREE to question and protest and voice. We have been a free society, we need to fight to keep our freedoms. My God, if our forefathers who shed blood to establish a free country could see what is happening now... The next thing that will happen is the 'unvaccinated' will be labeled as domestic terrorists. This is the propaganda that could await us. I am telling you people I am being serious. Wake up. The point is that unless people really look at the reality of this situation, this is the new country, the new world that you are creating. Wake Up. I know there are nurses on this site that will burn me at the stake for being a dissident and try to convince me about the necessity of a vaccine mandate by spewing out statistics and fear. I've heard those arguments and I do not need to hear anymore. I would rather hear from the RNs that are 'awake' and 'get it' and oppose the mandate on the flu vaccine on the fundamental basis of maintaining human rights, freedoms, free thought and choices. I want to hear from the RNs that are likeminded and who see the bigger picture.

Masks for all then, vaccinated or not. I explained my rationale for this in detail in my prior posting. Thoughts about that?
