SHARP Winter 2013/2014 New Nurse Residency
I actually had an interview this past week at Sharp Mary Birch for Labor and Delivery!!! I'm dying waiting to find out if I got the position or not. It is similar to Grossmont NICU where they have a panel of 6 (or 5 in my interview) and they will all go around the table and ask you questions individually. It can be pretty intimidating actually. For the L&D program at MB, they are interviewing 15 total and hiring 6-8 people they told me. I had also interviewed at Sharp Grossmont last January for their Spring new grad program but didn't have the Maternal Newborn Nursing care class at that time, so I wasn't hired. At that time they interviewed 8 and hired 4. I'm only telling you all this so you can get a feeling for how Sharp works....since I've been there done that twice now, I thought I would pass along the info as I know how interested I was to find out any info the first time or two I applied at Sharp. Also, I was told by the recruiter at Sharp they will ONLY look at your 2nd choice if the position you chose first is canceled for some reason. So, if you chose L&D first and NICU second, they will not even look at you for the NICU position since the L&D position wasn't canceled. Doesn't seem too fair to me, but that is how I was told that they do it there. Lastly, for those that were asking the pay rate. For BSN nurses, the starting pay I was told is $35.22 an hour - and this is without the night shift pay differential I am pretty certain. Hope that helps answer some questions for some of you. And good luck to all of you! :)

Sharp NICU New Grad
I applied too on July 1st and got an email with the supplemental screening form the very next day. Once I emailed it back though I got an automated response from the recruiter's email saying that the office was closed July 4-7th and will re-open on the 8th. Hopefully that helps some of you out who are wondering. Hope we hear something soon!!! Good luck everyone.

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
I was wondering if anyone who interviewed for Labor and Delivery was asked any clinical questions? I'm definitely preparing for the behavioral and typical interview questions, but wasn't sure I needed to prep for clinical questions too. TIA!

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
I totally agree! The wait is killing me! I know the recruiter on the phone said to be patient, but.....She said to me that we would know either way in 2-3 weeks. I'm still holding out hope though! :)

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
Yeah, I thought it was a requirement too. I asked the recruiter specifically about it and she said that it is recommended but not a requirement at this time (at least for Grossmont). I hope she is right! And thanks for the info on the class. Hopefully I can get in on the one in February then.

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
No, I haven't taken it yet. I just got my BSN in July and this is the first New Grad program I've applied to. I had no idea about that class until I applied. I contacted RPS and am hoping to hear from them soon and take the class ASAP! I'm just hoping that doesn't hurt my chances of getting in.

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
L&D at Grossmont was my first pick too! Did you take the Maternal Newborn Nursing Care class they recommended? I'm assuming too that they are starting with L&D units first since the program is supposed to start in November! :)

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
No, they aren't setting up interviews yet. It's just a screening interview over the phone. The recruiter said they will then forward my information to the hiring manager and they will be letting people know if they will be moving on to the next step in the hiring process within 2-3 weeks. I'm assuming she means a face to face interview.

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
Thank you! I specifically applied for Grossmont Hospital. However, the recruiter asked me where I preferred to work (not sure if she was just verifying my info or not). So they might be calling for all the L&D units. Hopefully they start calling soon for all the units too! :)

Sharp New Grad Program Fall 2012/Winter 2013
They have already started calling for the Labor and Delivery unit! Got a call this afternoon! Should know in about 2-3 weeks if I'm moving on in the hiring process the recruiter says. EEEkkkk. Good luck to all who applied.

Wow, going through this program with a 5 month old will be really tough. I hope she's a good sleeper and you've got lots of support at home! It's definitely do-able but it won't be easy. For your first class it's not that bad and there isn't too much work. I've heard from other cohorts though that from your 2nd month on it is incredibly fast paced and a ton of memorization and reading! I know the first 2 weeks of this class have been absolutely insane with the amount of work we have to do and the lack of sleep. A lot of it you are basically teaching yourself through all of the readings. For your theory class you will have a 7-10 page paper on the theorist of your choice. For some reason it took me forever to write this paper...probably because the subject is so boring. I wasn't alone either in this. For the class we're in now, we have a 2 page paper due for lecture along with our group project. However, in lab class we had to do a face-to-face interview (Health history) with a patient in a skilled nursing facility and had to write it all out APA format in paragraphs. Mine was 15 1/2 pages! We will also be doing a full head to toe inspection and have to write that up. I'm sure that will be equally as long. I honestly have no clue what the rest of the papers are going to be like. I took all my science and math pre-reqs at National and know that in every class you will always have a paper AND a group project. If you want to start reading your Theory book, it couldn't hurt but the subject matter is soo dry. In your Transcultural Nursing book I think we only read 3 chapters. Your group project will be to pick a culture group to present to the class via PowerPoint. I would actually reccommend getting your Health Assessment book early and looking over that. We are reading 8 chapters a week for the whole month. The reading alone is the most time consuming. The book is a great resource and well written, it's just a LOT of information to cover in 1 month! I'm sure you'll do just fine! My goal and what that same professor said to do was to set aside one whole day to not do any studying or school work and spend it only with my girls. I really value family time and it's frustrating to be physically present at home but not mentally here because I'm so intent on school work. My girls are already complaining about how much time I spend in school and doing homework outside of school. It also takes me 45 minutes (on a good day with no traffic) each way to get to RB for class. So, that's 6 hours just in driving on top of my 18 hours per week at class. I can only imagine what they will say when I'm doing 8 and 12 hour clinicals AND theory classes. At this point I'm just trying to keep my eye on the end result as I know it will benefit my family. I just hope I can graduate without losing my mind!

The last book is the APA format book which you will use when writing all of your papers for the program. I'm currentlly in my second month (Cohort 23) and if anyone is looking to buy the Nursing Theory and Transcultural Nursing books, I'm definitely going to sell mine. Just send me a private message.- National University San Diego
Just wrote out a long response and accidentally erased it. Must be time to stop studying for tonight. Anyway, I'm in Cohort 23 and in Theory right now. We go on Wednesdays from 9am-2pm. The rest of the work is done online and you will have to do 2 discussion board posts per week (at the minimum). These take a while because they are pretty in depth and you need to find outside resources other than your text. You will have a 7-10 page paper and a cultural presentation as well. The text is incredibly boring so watch out. Hopefully you don't get the same instructors that we have now. Let's just say I'm couting the days until our next class starts!! Next we have health assessment and we'll be going 4 days a week! Monday/Friday 4-9 for lecture and Tues/Thurs for 5 hours either in the morning or late afternoon/evening for lab. They just emailed us on Tuesday and said that due to a 'scheduling conflict' they had to move our class meeting day around. We were originally scheduled for Mon/Wed lecture, but they changed it to Friday. So when they say you need a flexible schedule, they literally mean it!! 1 1/2 weeks notice is not cool! I have a 3 1/2 year old and a 5 year old starting kindergarten at the end of August. Childcare costs are going to be horrendous!! But this is the route I chose to go, so I've just gotta suck it up and take out some extra loan money. It will all be worth it in the end. Good luck with everything and congrats on getting accepted!!- National University San Diego
WOO HOO! I got my acceptance letter in the mail today too!! :D I'm so incredibly excited. I cannot wait to become an RN! :redbeathe So glad we'll be in the same cohort ExPharmaGirl!!- National University San Diego
I'm going to sign up for the SOC 500 online class that starts in April (my last of the 3 required classes) Does anyone know which of the 2 teachers is better/easier? From other posts, I see that I can't put names, but just wondering if someone could message me with which one would be better or, if they had a good teacher for this class. Thanks!! Oh, and for the message about taking the ILR class online, I took it in November. Personally, I thought my teacher was waaay too picky for such a lame class. It isn't difficult, just time consuming with all of the message board posts and replies that you have to post. Then there is just busy work like making powerpoints, finding newsfeeds online, and using the NU Library. The only thing I learned from that class is how to use our NU Library which will really come in handy. They have a ton of resources I never would have found if I hadn't taken this class. Considering though the price of the class v.s. the $50 to test out, I would totally test out! Ask your advisor for a study guide and then there is actually a quiz on the NU Library website that is directly from the test! Good luck with that decision.- National University San Diego
Hey there, I don't mind sharing my stats. I scored a 86.5 on the TEAS and I really haven't calculated my GPA. In the pre-recs I got an A in Biomedical Stats, A's in A&P 1 and 2 with labs, and a B- in micro lecture, and an A- in micro lab. I had the worst teacher for Micro and she was gone for the first 2 or so weeks of class. I'm prety sure I did great on the essay too seeing as I am about 2 classes shy of a BA in English! :) Honestly, if I don't get an acceptance letter then I will be calling them ASAP to see what the deal is. I heard that the last cohort had a B average going in, so I'm quite hopeful. What were your stats, if you don't mind me asking?!? Good luck to you and let us know if you hear anything! I'm practically stalking the mailbox!- National University San Diego
I agree with Twilight on this one. Take that test as SOON as you possibly can. I was trying to take it for the November 2009 Application deadline and they told me that they would not even look at my application if my ILR test was being graded still. I ended up having to take the class and signed up the day it started. (Talk about a COMPLETE waste of money!!) That class actually ended the day after the Nov. Application deadline and I had to call the nursing department to see if they would accept my app. or not. I was told that since I was taking the class at National, and they could pull my transcripts themselves within ten days of the class finishing, they would accept my application. I did however have to write a cover-letter explaining the situation when I turned in my app. I was told that if it was any other class such as Statistics, A&P 1 or 2, or Micro that they would NOT accept the application. They are very strict on this rule and when I tried to kinda complain to the lady on the phone that it wasn't fair that they wouldn't accept my app while the ILR test was being graded, she got annoyed with me and a bit rude. My advice for anyone who hasn't gone to a Pre-Nursing forum or isn't sure of the pre-recs necessary is that you should contact the nursing department as opposed to your advisor. My advisor thought it took about a week to grade the IRL test and actually apologized to me when I told her that I had to take ILR because she had given me misinformation. This whole process is so frustrating and I personally feel that the Nursing department at NU doesn't make it any easier really. Good luck to all of you as you go through this process!! I'm hoping to find out if I made it into the July 2010 cohort either later this week or sometime next week! The anticipation is killing me though!- National University San Diego
Harparia, I can only imagine how irritating this is! I have asked both my advisor and even the people at the nursing forum to nail down some times or give me ideas of clinicals and they all say that it varies and you have to be flexible. They said that they will usually give you about a month's advance notice, but I've heard otherwise. I'm just worried because I have an almost 3 year old and a 4 1/2 year old who will be starting Kindergarten in August, and I'm planning on starting the July cohort. Trying to find childcare at such a late notice is going to be terrible I have a feeling.- National University San Diego
I agree...SPN 340A was very easy and I got an A with minimal effort as well. It does help if you have had other spanish classes before. I took 4 years of high school Spanish, so this just seemed more like a review for me with a few new vocabulary words related to nursing/health care. Also, most of the answers for the excercises that we did for homework were in the back of the book. I didn't copy them, but always double checked my answers w/ them before turnign in my work. I'm sure you'll do fine!- National University San Diego
Hey 9fingers, I JUST heard back from the admissions lady today! I e-mailed her last week b/c a few of my friends took the TEAS last week and were wondering why I wasn't there.....So, I was worried and it had been over 6 weeks since she said she received my application. She emailed me back and said to be patient and that everyone who applied would get a chance to take the TEAS, but it just takes a long time to process the applications. So, I finally got my email to sign up for the test and essay today! The only test dates left are this Thursday and next Tuesday (Jan. 21st and 26th). So, I have a week to study! I hope you've heard back from her by now. This process is unnecessarily long and it is driving me crazy! Supposedly, they will send out acceptance letters or e-mails the first week of March. I won't hold my breath though!!! Good luck!- National University San Diego
Hey Twilight...sorry i didn't get back to you sooner. I was super busy w/ class and the Holidays. Yes, I was taking that class! Sorry I missed you. I'm currently in Crosscultural Communications (SPN 341) How did you do in Spanish in the workplace? I thought it was actually pretty easy.....surprisingly but the info seemed to be helpful for nursing. - National University San Diego
