DANG! I thought it was the Mosby's so I bought the new Mosby's. ISBN is 0-323-03901-4 I used the Saunder's for my LPN and I loved it! I will probably buy it too. Anyone got a loan??

There is also Park Univ. They should be enrolling in March. You have to test into the program. They only take the top 30 people. The test to get in is similar to the NCLEX-PN. Classes start in Aug and graduate in May. Price is comparable to everywhere else. I think it's about $16K. Not sure though. I am going thru Excelsior College online where it is only costing me $6K and I don't have to slow down on work or family to complete my program. It will take me 13-14 months from start to finish. It's worth it to me. Hope that helps! Mama

I was on EC website. I haven't enrolled with them yet but I have done the free sign in. It will give me contents to every class except the NC classes. Do you have the contents for NC1. I have been studying my old LPN stuff and I have a CN book that a friend loaned me. I dont know if it's up to date though. Thanks bunches!! Mama

eager - are you going thru ec alone or with cn modules? how much do ec's books run? i am trying to figure out ec vs ec via college network materials. so far, i am really favoring ec. can i study for these exams and test without going thru either? say i buy books on ebay and test, have the exam results send to ec??? enroll when i hit nc1 or nc3? thanks and best wishes! mama

click, i don't think you get charged the dollar amount times the credit hours. the $190 is the fee you pay at the testing center when you are ready to test out or clep out of the class. it is a one time fee unless you fail the test and have to retake it. then you pay the $190 again. i was confused about paying "per credit hour" as well. however, i called ec today and verified if you are enrolled in one of their online classes (i.e. offered from 5/07 to 8/07 and has deadlines etc) vs what we are looking into is set at our own pace. just wanted to let you know - that definitely makes it look pricey!! keep me posted on your endeavors. i am eager to get to the point i can begin. whichever way it is i go.... mama

Questions... Am I correct to say you don't have to enroll in TCN OR EC right away? If you have the material (shared persay) then you can test and the credit will go towards EC? I know you don't have to enroll in EC until you hit Nursing Concepts 3. But before that - you can still complete the necessary classes and apply it towards your EC degree? (Even if you chanced buying your TCN modules on ebay) I posted this in the Excelsior blog too... just wanted to throw it out there in the TCN vs EC blog too.... I am on the verge of CN or EC. I had a CN "salesman" come out and show me all of the terms and small print. I didn't sign with them simply because I've not done all of my homework. He says, CN Fee $5,705 to pay CN fee, book fees, bunches of other test preps etc. Then your testing site fees (the classes I need) would be $2245 Enroll in EC at NC3 and pay them $3,465 for their application, enrollment, literacy course, clinical fee, and graduation fee. Total $11,495. Now, I went to EC and found that my total would be almost $7,000 for all of their fees and my testing fees. That does not include books or any other study material. THEN, I also read they charge $275 per credit hour. That would be $5,500 more just for 20 credit horuse (which I need many more then that) AND that is not counting book fees. That would be approx $12,500 plus who knows how much in book fees??? ????????? :smackingf: Any advice on this? People say CN is so much more, but I am not seeing it. HELP.......... FYI - They also have a new policy effective Jan 2007 - if you are already and LPN/LVN you don't have to take NC2! :w00t:

Is Specialty Hosp of Mid-America the same as Select? In OP Hospital? One of my instructors from PN school works there. We did our acute care clinical there as well. I really enjoyed it. How long have you been there? Do I just have to fill out paper work and (more than likely) a fee for become licensed in KS? Tara

OK Shopgal... LOL, cough it up... Where do you work? I am a new grad, take my boards this Wednesday (xing fingers) and need a J-O-B as my hubby lovingly refers to it... Dan, I have tried at NKCH, how in the world do you get a call back from them? I have several good friends that work there. Only one is a graduate nurse from my class but she was a CMT for them during school and they bumped her right into a PN position. (AND she took a pay cut to move to the PN position)

Welcome to the forum! I have about every NCLEX-PN book there is out there. BUT, there are two in particular that I personally think are great. 1) Saunders Edition 2 Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-PN Examination. It has small amounts of lecture and comprensive material on EVERY subject, numerous questions at the end of each chapter which also have rationales to the answers. Also comes with a CD-ROM with 3,000 practice questions in it. The CD-ROM is neat because you can take quizes on any subject of your choice or simulated NCLEX exams with 150 questions or so. It also offers you a study session on the disk. 2) NCLEX-PN 250 New-Format Questions by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Although this book is smaller in size, it REALLY helps you understand the new fill-in-the blank, select all that appy, and diagram questions that are now on the NCLEX. Hope this helps and good luck! Hello, Can anyone break down Alpha, Beta, and Calcium Channel blockers? Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, Beta-2 etc... Usually I can grasp a concept pretty easily, but this has me pulling out my hair! Any input, explanation, websites would be greatly appreciated. An instructor was trying to find "the pig picture" I guess this picture breaks it down really well. She says once you see the pig pic you will never forget how it all works. I have yet to find this piggy! Anyone know of "The Pig"?? Thanks!

Thank you kaseysmom and renerian! My hopice rotation starts Feb 1st. I will follow and assist an RN all day. However, this week we were assigned a hospice pt to go see as a volunteer for 1 hour a week on our own time. Since I hadn't done any of my clinicals with hospice yet, I just wasn't sure. I figured I would just talk and listen, maybe read them a book they love or so forth. Thanks for your info I really appreciate it!

Hi everyone. I am close to to graduation with my LPN. It has come time for our Hospice volunteer rotation. I'm happy and scared at the same time. The instructors have been somewhat vague on what is expected as a volunteer. We have been told absolutely no medical treatment or helping with ADL's. We are just there to support them. I plan to go meet my new friend this weekend. My patient is aware of her diagnosis and prognosis. Any tips on what I can do to make sure all of my visits with her are pleasant? I'm just not sure (at all) what I can do. I'm a HUGE softy when it comes to the elderly and I become very attached. Lost my "Grammy", whom I was VERY close to. Alzheimers...such a mysterious disease. I find it beautiful and admirable that people are able to help others in their transition to move on. I don't have a problem with death. I'm not sure what I'm afraid of really. I guess it's a completely different territory for me and I don't like to walk into anything blind. Any suggestions?

I too know what "the patient" feels. I have been a pt for so long now, I decided to go to nursing school! I was diagnosed at the ripe at of 19 with Endometriosis. Contrary to several doctors beliefs of having children, I was blessed with 2 beautiful babies. (My son is now 4 and daughter will be 2 in March) I was also blessed with the battle of 6 types of birth control pills, 3 different types of medically induced menopause. One Depo shot caused me to bleed for 26 WEEKS STRAIGHT! :angryfire Not to mention the 6 laproscopic surgeries. The pain was so intense on a daily basis... Finally, last August I had my hysterectomy at the age of 28. I had Laproscopic assisted lady partsl Hysterectomy. ((leaving only one ovary) No major incisions. 1 small one in my belly button and two small holes above the ovarian area on both sides. (They found I also had fibroid tumors and Adenomyosis as well.) I was up walking around 3 hours after leaving recovery and went home (errr shopping, shhh ) the next day. LOL I was in so much pain going TO the hospital for surgery that the post-op pain was NOTHING! Anyway, I LOVE my hysterectomy! Sometimes I wonder why I waited so long, but I do have two precious babes! I too can still tell when it 'would be' my time of the month by my moods. But otherwise, no hot flashes and no hormones... I would also check into the lady partsl hysterectomy too. I flew out of town 9 days after surgery. I felt normal with no pain at all after about 4 days. I still took advantage of my 4 weeks of medical leave though. :chuckle Best wishes hun, I know what it's like to have the "crimson tide" and I feel for you! Good luck!

I think the theory is very interetsing. I beleive it has a lot to do with whether you are educated and IN CONTROL of yourself during labor. My first delivery was beautiful. I went to the hosp at 8am 4cm, 80%, ctx 2-3min. Noon, I was 6 cm and my contrax stopped. They thought he was too big. I rested for an hour. 1pm they gave me pit. 3:30 started pushing and at 4:03 my son was in my arms. I had discomfort and pain but never out of control, screaming, "I think I'm going to die" pain. I had educated myself very well on "first time" delivery experiences for new moms. Now, I was not so educated with how differently one labor could be from the next. I figured, second child...cut my delivery time from before in half and all is well. WRONG! Water broke at 9am (in Lowe's...lovely). :imbar: Went to the hosp at noon. No contrax. BUT, I was dilated to 5cm, 90% and 0 station. I walked ALL day with what felt like her bowling ball of a head half hanging out. 5pm the Dr insisted pit to get things rolling. 5:30 6cm...5:45 started getting very uncomfortable and thinking WOW I have a few more hours and this is much worse then the last time. 6:00 freaked out, the pain was so intense that I thought my bladder was rupturing. Told the RN I had to pee. She advised that she needed to check me. Checked me, told me if I felt the urge to push....DON'T and she ran out. My husband panics at this point. Doc ran in just in time to catch her head! I pushed once to get the shoulders out and that was it. From the time I received my IV to the time of her birth was 50 minutes. I never expected a delivery to happen so fast and I remember thinking I was going to DIE!!! I was SO not in control of the situation. I just simply coulnd't believe enough time had passed by to get that far. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is, I believe the more knowledge you have about what your body is going thru and why, the more in control you are and less EXCRUCIATING pain you are in.... I love this website! My love is for Labor and Delivery. I am finally starting nursing school in May. Wish me luck! I CANT WAIT!!!! Take care!
