You know you're an ICU nurse when...
when you can change diprivan tubing quick enough to keep the OD vented pt from waking up when less than two empty lumens make you nervous when you can smell a DKAer from outside your unit when you see a sedated pt with a rectal tube, aline, central line, foley, OG to suction and think, this is going to be an easy night!! when you hear a pt ring the call light you think, they aren't sick enough for the ICU!

A Day in the life of an ICU nurse?
It's hard to give a routine in the ICU. If you have two stable pts you may have a routine for that shift, but if you have a very unstable pt, you'll be running around like crazy trying to get orders, titrate pressors, calling MDs, aiding in procedures... in any free time you'll be playing catch up with your other pt. Then some nights you may have two pts with transfer orders and spent a great deal of time twiddling your thumbs.. it just depends. We usually have a tech, but with only one on the entire unit, you can't count on them since they are busy usually. If I have a GI bleeder or C Diff pt, I will be spending a good deal of time cleaning poo. But, usually they are other nurses around to help you who have a lighter load that shift.

Medical and Surgical ICU at Grady Health System
I was also interested in working in grady's ICU (I was a new grad with a 400 hour ICU practicum) but didnt get an interview, so I took at critical care job at another atlanta hospital. But, Grady pays much higher than the other hospitals in the area, so I'm not sure where the low pay information came from (the pay is listed on their website)

I know the Litmann's are supposed to be good, I think they run around $75 bucks. I'm not sure if MCG recommends any certain kind... Does anyone know?

MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010
I checked yesterday, and our names are finally in the MCG system. You have to look our student username up through eguide; then you use that username and the year you were born plus the last four of your social as your starting password. You can check your email and finish your financial aid application.

Wow that is awesome that we will have so many hand-on experiences! I'm so anxious to hear more about the program, it seems like they should really tell us more soon! GAmom; thank you so much for answering all these questions... do you know when you hear any more info about the program before you started? Was it in May, or later?

MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010
Hey girl, I am kind of dealing with the same thing you are. I got accepted to the Augusta campus, my husband works and we live in Atlanta (with my 2 year old daugter). We are really hoping for a job for him in Augusta, but if one doesn't come, I'm going to have to go to school anyway. I know the program is only 2 or 3 days a week (depending on the semester), so I may have to spend a night or two in Augusta then travel back for the rest of the week. Good luck!

MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010
Yeah, I called financial aid about a week ago and they said that we can't do or know anything until we're offically in the system. Then there's another form to fill out specifically for MCG and I think thats it...
