Please help me...Do you think I'll get kicked out of nursing school?
Some of the most valuable lessons are the ones that are the most painful to learn. I've been on the receiving end of more of those lessons than I'll admit to here. But I bet you don't have problems with professionalism in class or in the workplace after this. And that's probably her entire point in making you sweat this out. Expect a stern talking-to. You earned it. Then let the emotion go and take the lesson with you.

is nursing right for me?
Poop is very different with gloves on. It might not be as bad as you expect. Having said that, it's still poop. It's my first week of nursing school and I figure that if I can clean up after my dog when he has diarrhea all over my carpets, I can wipe someone's butt. I hope.

Accelerated programs...expensive or cheap?
Why are you determined to pay out of state tuition? CA has nursing schools.

FSCJ Fall 2010 ACCEPTED
Check your FSCJ email. Monday degree audits are canceled. So all you N&W people who (like me) didn't know how you were going to get another day off from work won't have to now.

FSCJ Fall 2010 ACCEPTED
I'm NOT happy about this refund card. Not at all. It's one thing if they want to offer it as an option but another thing entirely to make me jump through hoops to get my refund. In order to have my refund sent to the account that I used to pay for my books and supplies, I have to register on this bank's website, register the card they sent (that I don't want and now have to destroy), navigate through their propaganda in order to choose NOT to open an account with them, fill out a direct deposit form, print it out and mail it to them. Then I get to wait for them to process my direct deposit request and THEN I get to wait for my money. It makes me angry that my school has tied me to this institution for several reasons, not the least of which is that this "bank" has created several artificial barriers to try and frustrate people into using their banking services. It reminds me of the last time I upgraded my phone and discovered that my "rebate" was coming in the form of a pre-paid card that I could only use to buy products and services from my carrier. I'm just flat sick of companies finding new ways to keep my money from me and the institutions I'm tied to acting in the interest of everyone BUT their customers.

FSCJ Fall 2010 ACCEPTED
My financial aid is all green except "Disbursement Status" which is red (presumably because I've not had anything disbursed yet) but when I drill down on the link, it shows no holds. Having said all of that, with green award status, I do show that I owe a full balance for classes that I registered for today. I expected it to take at least a full business day to process since the financial aid people said they wouldn't be caught up until Wednesday anyway. If I show a balance Thursday morning I'll just have to pay online.

So, did anyone else notice that our acceptance letter doesn't say on which campus the orientation is held?

FCCJ/FSCJ Fall 2010 Hopefuls
I don't know of a semester in which 222 wasn't high enough to make the nights/weekends cut. I was accepted last term with 240.3, which is what I'm applying with again for the fall.

FCCJ/FSCJ Fall 2010 Hopefuls
After having to decline my seat for the Summer term, I've re-applied for this Fall's Evenings & Weekends class with the same points that got me in last time. Hopefully those points are still good enough for that section. Good luck to everyone.

FCSJ fka FCCJ-Points you had when you applied for Nursing
You can get more than 120 points on the NAT. The max raw score is 210 points (90 for academic aptitude, 90 for natural sciences, 30 for reading comprehension). Multiply that by .64 to get your NAT points and you can get up to 134.4 points from the NAT if you get perfect scores in the three areas that count (spelling and the personality test aren't considered for your point total).

FCCJ/FSCJ Fall 2010 Hopefuls
lwalk, to apply to the nursing program, you must have been accepted for admittance to fscj. that means your ap courses taken in high school should have already been submitted to the fscj admissions office and your transcripts screened. during the admissions process, your transcripts will be reviewed and your courses imported into your fscj transcript as course equivalencies. to apply for the nursing program, you submit only your fscj transcript to the address on the application packet. they won't accept any others. if it's not on your fscj transcript, as far as the nursing admissions screeners are concerned, you didn't take the course. but that's a moot point because you can't apply for the nursing program until you've been admitted to fscj in the first place, and that process ensures that you get credit for all of your previous coursework. the transcript screening process can take up to a month to complete, so i'd talk to an admissions advisor (for fscj, not for the nursing program) as soon as possible to start the process. good luck.

FCCJ/FSCJ Fall 2010 Hopefuls
Anna, A&P I online is very time consuming. The worst part about the course is the tests. Because you are taking the course online, you'll be taking standardized tests and they are MUCH, MUCH more difficult than most instructor-generated exams. My best advice to you is to get every available point on your non-exam assignments (discussion boards, labs, and any other assignments you are given by your instructor) because you will need them to raise your overall grade. No one in my entire online class had an "A" average on their exams alone and only 2 had "B" averages on their exams. I only managed an "A" in the class because I had almost every other point available and those points compensated just enough to offset the "B" average from my exams. The final is the easiest exam if I recall. I actually got an A on that one, but not on any others. To prepare for the exams, I studied 5 nights a week at a minimum, read every page of every chapter and studied terms and study questions at the end of each chapter even though they weren't assigned. The upside is that I learned a LOT more in A&P I than I did in A&P II, which I took in a classroom. The downside is that I worked 10 times harder for the A in the online course than I did for the same grade in the classroom. And yes, I did all of this while working full time, but I wasn't taking any other courses during the A&P I course. Good Luck

FCCJ Summer 2010 hopefuls...
Well, congratulations to everyone that got accepted. One slot in Evenings and Weekends just opened up, as I was informed that I'm being sent out of area on temporary assignment for a few months. So congrats to one more person. lol. Hopefully I'll be back in area in time for the Fall term.

FCCJ Summer 2010 hopefuls...
you can borrow up to $10,000 per academic year (that's for all three semesters, fall, spring, summer) in student loans at fscj. you may not be eligible for subsidized loans, but you should still have no problem fully funding your nursing school with unsubsidized loans since $3,000 is more than you'll need to cover books, fees and tuition each semester. after that, the only real problem is getting a job that pays enough to cover your student loan payments within 6 months of graduation when your payments start.

How much do I need to know about sports?
Guys who talk about sports don't care about your opinion, so you don't need to have one. Anyone who can't find a non-sports topic of conversation falls into the category of the self-identified "sports fan." In this country, that means their views on sports are more sacred than their political or religious beliefs and they honestly believe they should be sitting in a studio being paid to shout their opinions at you. You could work with one of those guys for 10 years and "talk sports" every single day and he'd never notice that you don't actually know anything about what he's saying because he still hasn't stopped talking.

FCCJ Summer 2010 hopefuls...
Does UNF have a nights/weekends option? I couldn't find any information about one which is why I applied to FSCJ instead of going for my BSN right out of the gate.

FCCJ Summer 2010 hopefuls...
That's what the packet says which is why the question was specifically asked. All I can say is that when I asked, I was told that you get as many points on the NAT as you earn, even if it is more than 120.
-
FCCJ Summer 2010 hopefuls...
240 is not the max and the NAT doesn't cap at 120. You can use as many points as you earn. At least that's what the director of the FSCJ nursing program told us.

How much will the nursing program affect my sports watching?
Unfortunately, I'll be doing a nights & weekends section for nursing school or I won't be going at all. I wouldn't mind just DVRing the games so I could watch them when I get back from my Sunday clinicals, except I can't exactly DVR my season tickets. My wife is still trying to decide if she's going to the games without me and hope I can make the second half for 1pm kickoffs or if she wants to sell our seats on the days I can't go to the game.

Jacksonville, FL Nursing School Options
I wouldn't try and take A&P II and Micro together during a summer session unless you don't have anything to do other than go to school. It might be a better plan to take A&P II online now and Micro during the summer. That also lets you apply for the Fall nursing class because you don't have to have completed Micro to apply, but you do have to have completed A&P II. A&P I online was very difficult and it took a lot of dedicated study time. The exams were much, much harder than exams for a typical classroom class. If you can find a hybrid class so you only have to go to class once a week, you'll probably end up with more free time than an online-only class, but either way, it should be possible for you to take a class this semester, even without your husband available to help with childcare. The important thing to realize is that if you don't take A&P II until the summer, the first nursing class you could possibly apply to would be Spring 2011.

The wait for your acceptance into nursing school
I don't know your school's use of the NAT (I'm assuming you're referring to the PSB-NAT). FSCJ only uses a few of those scores you listed and the percentages don't matter at all. They use your raw scores in three areas. But even if your school does use percentages and uses all of them, they won't use all of them you listed because some of them are overlapping. The first three percentages on your score sheet are probably part of the general Academic Aptitude section. Logic, Arithmetic and Verbal are the three components of AA and I doubt your school would count the sub-scores and the main score as well. It's probably one or the other. FSCJ also doesn't use the Spelling score nor the vocational score (the last section that is essentially a personality test). FSCJ takes your raw score in AA, Reading comprehension and Natural Sciences and multiplies that number by .64 to derive the number of admission points you get from the NAT. I'm certain that's not a universal practice, but I thought I'd tell you in case that's where you applied since I don't think many other schools use the NAT.

Jacksonville, FL Nursing School Options
Nikki, Admission to FSCJ is simple. They check your residency and use a system to calculate your admission points. They then accept students based on the highest admission points down until all the available slots are filled. So to know if it's worthwhile to apply to FSCJ, you need to know your admission points and the answer to one question. 1) Do you live in Duval or Nassau county? If yes, continue. If no, apply somewhere else. 2) What grades do you have for the prerequisite courses? The courses that count toward your admission are: A&P I A&P II Microbiology Math (College Algebra or higher) One Humanities Course (HUM, PHIL, etc...) Human Growth & Development English (College English or higher. Remedial or College Prep English doesn't count) Introduction to Psychology Introduction to Sociology and that's it. For every "A", multiply the number of hours for the course (4 for A&P and Micro, 3 for everything else) by 4. Every "B" multiply by 3. Every "C" multiply by 2. Add those points together and you have half of your admission points. The other half of your admission points come from your score on the NAT. Schedule the NAT at the FSCJ testing center. It costs $35 to take it. Your raw score on the Academic Aptitude, Reading Comprehension and Natural Sciences sections are your NAT raw score (Spelling doesn't count toward your score and neither does the personality test at the end, even though you have to take those sections). Multiply that number by .64 and that's the number of admission points you get from your NAT. Add your NAT admission points (not your NAT score) to your grade admission points, and that's your total admission points. If your total admission points are above 190, apply at FSCJ. The lowest admission points that make it into the program typically falls above 190 and below 200. If your points are lower than 190, pay the extra money and go to one of the other schools. Whatever you decide to do, do it quickly. The application deadline for FSCJ's summer term (starting in May) ends on February 1. So if you haven't taken the NAT, take it this week if you can and at least you'll know what your admission points are and you can make an educated decision about your school. Good luck.
