  1. Hey, I too went LPN and am finishing my RN! Many people who want there RN in Florida and don't want the 2 year lag go this route. Many of the local community colleges are taking their LPN-RN courses online now as well! I would be very leary of newly approved colleges. It is very difficult to get clinical times now within the hospital systems in town. Even though I was in SCC, they still had difficulty scheduling some rotations, so you would end up with evening and weekend rotations for clinicals even though you were considered a Day program!
  2. I work at FH Orlando, and they have caffeinated beverages, real meat, and most items found at any other facility. They DO NOT serve pork products. The Wendy's on Orange Ave also doesn't serve bacon on their hamburgers. I didn't realize it at the time but was informed it is because they rent that location from FH and they would not rent to them if they served pork! Piggish huh?.......sorry just punning around.......I will tell you that our facility doesn't give much thought to their variety...same things all the time. Would be interested if someone actually offered healthy choices(sub bar, wraps, more grilled items)

I need insight (suggestions) regarding LPN work. I graduate in December as a LPN. In may I will be starting my RN transitional program. I currently work at FL Hosp as a Tech to get through school. I am running into brick walls regarding the hiring of PN's in any field other than LTC! When I explain that I am transitioning over I get the response to call back then! Right. I work in a hospital setting now, don't want to lose that experience, really don't care to go into LTC as my goal is Pediatric Cardiology:rolleyes: . Any input from other nurses on how to get there? Called numbers given during a career fair, and not getting anywhere. I am starting to really get frustrated....... Seems like when I get my RN, I will seriously get selective about the facility I really want to work in. Do they want nurses or not? RN's are great, but LPN's have a place as well. Why the shut out? Any suggestions?

Sorry Annabelle but where are the very backward areas? That area of Orlando is growing so fast that alot of new large developments are constantly going in. It actually is causing problems for families who moved there for the acreage..... I go through that area weekly and think it is cool that you can still get land that is NOT zero lot lined and not get tied up in traffic to get to the store.. :) Just so you know .... I live in the Union Park area and have lived on this side since 1976 and I say this area has stayed very constant. Oviedo has grown from a one light bedroom community to as spread out as Orlando, Chuluta is actually on the map now....hehehe....I cannot believe how much some areas have changed...some have gotten snotty...but others just plug away.... Like you said all have good and bad... (east side)UCF, FL Hosp East, are both expanding with their medical programs. UCF is trying for a medical school and I think the Florida Nursing association has ties there...? BUT like Annabelle57 said.....every area has their good points and bad points. To be fair the east side is having major traffic tie ups....almost as bad as the I-4 corridor....yuck! I suggest you rent an apartment close to one of the hospitals till you get your feel for the area. I work at Florida Hospital Orlando off Rollins and they always have adds for employees looking for roommates at all their sites. If you want lots of opportunities and you are not sure where you want to stay for employment, Florida Hospital has alot to offer! I plan on staying there through RN status and at least 1-2yrs past graduation. I want to experience ICU/ER and their Cardiac programs. They are the only hospital in Central Florida known for their Cardiac care. All surrounding facilities regularly send us their patients. Their Ped department is supposed to be expanding as well..... :balloons: Good Luck and ANNABELLE57 was pretty much on target with everything else stated..... :chuckle nothing mean intended Annabelle57...we all love the city of the mouse! :1luvu:
  5. Donna, I suggest Seminole Community College! I am currently enrolled in their LPN program due to bridge in May 2006. Go to their website and get phone #'s or email address and get their info. You need to attend a nursing orientation in order to qualify to apply to the program. Valencia has the same type of system. Americare is another one in this area who is planning to bridge LPN/RN. I don't believe they have started it yet. I chose SCC because the staff were so much more helpfull, courteous, freindly to me. I am 40 just going to college for the 1st time and had NO clue what to do. Valencia gave me a run around. Counselor did not even know they had the bridge program. They also cost more than SCC. I live closer to VCC but the aggravation I got from their staff was not very encouraging, I felt like the people I spoke with never had time to answer questions. I had finished my pre-reqs for RN transition so I will start bridge program immediately following my graduation as LPN this fall. All the professors I have been working for have been really interested in seeing everyone succeed. Anyway make sure you verify that the pre-reqs you are currently taking will be accepted by either one of these programs. I have heard that alot of times out of state courses are not always transferable to our schools.....for the Nursing courses anyway.
  6. I must say, wow have I been lucky! I am in 1st clinical rotation and have a great instructor and clinical staff. The LTC facility we are in is divided into two wings, we have a variety of clients to learn from and the LPN's are very helpfull. We do have a couple students who slack on their reading, research, etc, and hopefully they end up removed from the program. As a teaching RN or LPN I would quickly lose patience with those students, as a fellow student I do not like to follow them on any rotation and their questions should have been looked up before resorting to just asking nurse in charge(lazy). I dread going to Med/Surg though. Seems like most of the nasty stuff is coming in that clinical and I can't figure out why someone would stay in this profession who did not like it? If you don't want to work with students say so to the instructor. If you don't want your patients get out of the field! Of the CNA's I have worked with most were helpful. Some were not. They actually do hide! Have one right now who smokes every 1/2 hour.....unbelievable-I offer to help any CNA when I am not busy, I rub clients backs who are confined in whlchr. I just verify that I am authorized to care for the pt before doing anything! Still some CNA's actually resent the relief of their load! One did not want us to turn pt, when I did, I found severe bruising under leg. "UH don't know how that happened" No one on the staff was aware. She had multi-contractures/boots applied(nonverbal, nonvisual). The CNA was not accused of anything, but care was changed. Needless to say care on that pt has gotten much more strict!! I am an older student who respects the instructor, LPN or RN on sites, and still has respect and compassion for my client/pt. I hope someone points out to me if I ever lose that compassion, I want to leave this field. So if you feel like you are not being respected maybe you should look in the mirror-are you giving what you think you should get?????? RN in GA sounds much to negative, bitter, judgemental and should maybe "move on"
  7. According to the Orlando Sentinel this past week those awards are not going to pay for her care...her bill is being picked up by the generous tax payers of this state of Florida! I never saw mention throughout this thread, but this has been in our news for years. The last couple years it has gotten ugly In the beginning of this fight, the family of Teri, I believe it was her sister, stated that Teri was actually starting to fear him and ready to leave. The marriage had soured, he was calling names, she became anorexic because the badgering of her gain of weight! The previous reports had questioned the possibility of previous injuries not reported or treated while they were together. :angryfire The first court fights had clinical people from the nursing facility testify that the "spouse" would bar any type of mental stimulation(no talking in her room, no TV, drawn blinds, no radio, etc), antibotics, or physical therapy for her, he did yell and swear at caretakers, ban family members. The lawsuits had been won, but the money wasn't being used for her improvements. My biggest confusion is how any WOMAN/MAN can live with someone willing to do this to their current partner? Why not just divorce and move on? How do they explain to their kids what they are hearing from the other kids, neighbors, etc? How can they justify to those kids that Dad is married to someone else, they are waiting for her to die so they can get the money to marry???? He is entitled to look for love elsewhere, but that means the current relationship is over. According to him, Teri is not the person he married anyway, so just leave and let the parents take over. Why is it ok to withdraw nutrition and fluids from diabled adults but NO ONE would ever step over the line and suggest the same for a minor!! In my eyes every human has a god given right to food and water, however it is delivered! It is not the same with ventilators, etc. If it walks like a duck, it talks like a duck........it is a d***!
