sorry to get back to you so late. I hope your first semester went well. I did graduate this Dec. and am taking the NCLEX at the end of this month. What worked for me was watch powerpoints and read the content covered on the powerpoints in the hogan or saunders review books. Skim through the text. Do lots of review questions.

Hi aliveword, I posted last year on this thread about the difference between SVCC and Tyler. I am now a 4th semester student at Tyler. I graduate this Dec, woohoo!!!!!! You'll do fine at Tyler. We did lose a lot of 1st semester students Spring 2011. I talked to the 1st semester instructors. One told me that they had a lot of students drop when they started clinicals because they realized nursing wasnt for them. I've only met 1 person that failed 1st semester and she got back in the following semester. Dont worry about how others are doing. They have done a lot of changes to the program. Keep on top of the reading and homework. Ask lots of questions and always be prepared and you'll sail through.

it might sound harsh, but leave the house when you have to study, go to the library, if your school is near by go there. stay after classes if you can. Let your husband know that if he wants you to succeed and improve your family's situation once you graduate you need to study so that you can graduate. Tell your teen, dont ask, to help out around the house. Its time to step up and take control of the situation. If I have waited for my hubby to get a clue of how much homework nursing school gives, i would not have made it passed first semester. Show your husband your homework (readin assignments, clinical drug logs, and client assessment paperwork that is not completed (HIPPA first). Show him these things so he gets the clue that NS is like a fulltime job that requires a lot of time to prepare for and study.You need to have support and understanding from your family, right now it doesnt look like u have that, so lay down the law. But make sure to make the time to do things with your family, relax, and have fun.

Not sure where you got your info from but the applicants for the Spring and Fall 2011 RN students have not been picked yet. The applications for the spring 2011 semester are due between Aug. 30 to Sept. 3. The Fall 2011 is due sometime in Feb. You can still apply for the Spring 2011 and do A&P 2. If you don't get in one semester you have to reapply the following semester, so there is no waiting list. It is based on gpa and pre-reqs done. I have attend both SVCC and Tyler. At SVCC (alberta campus) I was an A student and left during the first semester (still having an A in the nursing class) because I felt the teachers were not effective and I felt bullied not only by them but also some other students. I wasn't the only person being bullied, we went to the school and nothing was done. SVCC is also not NLN accredited, so your nursing credits will not transfer to many 4 yr universities, and they have one of the worst retention rates in the state while I was there, with only 5-12 students graduating from each campus, thats only a 17-40% graduation rate. I'm also in Tylers hybrid program which rocks! I do all my class work online and only go in for clinicals and lab. You can't beat that if you are a self learner and motivated. At Tyler I am a 2nd semester RN student and love it. I recently saw a girl that was with me in the SVCC RN program. At SVCC she was told to give up at mid-terms because she wasn't going to make during first semester and failed. At Tyler she is a thrid semester student in the LPN to RN program and graduating this Dec and is a solid B student. The program at SVCC is not harder, acutally I found that the SVCC tests were easier. The biggest difference in my opinion and in people who have switched from SVCC to Tyler is the instructors. I feel that the Tyler instructors are more considerate, professional, and better suited for nursing education. Another plus side to Tyler is that their LPN to RN program follows consecutive semesters, so you go during the summer. It is also only on nights and weekends; which is better for an LPN because she can work during the weekdays.

At a local community college, I have seen classes of 30 start, and by the end only 7 actually graduate. They say the first semester is when you lose the most students ( some fail, some realize they don't like nursing, some have medical problems).

I just attended their informational session today. I had applied for the CNP through JTCC back in june. We fall under different guidelines but we all be JTCC because the CNP no longer exists. No one else is able to now apply for the CNP now, they are only honoring the students that start in the fall and the CNP applicants for spring 2010. For John Tyler it is very competitive, we had 90 people at the informational session and there is another at 5 pm (it is expected to be full). We were told that if you have a 3.2 GPA to be nervous about getting in, they rank students by GPA. For the traditional day program, they are only accepting 40 students (highest GPA get in), for the LPN/Paramedic to RN Program 20 students. For the online program 20 students which are also competing with the CNP students for slots (only for the 2010 spring, after that everyone applies for JTCC since the CNP no longer exists). The online program is also highest GPAs are accepted first. If you have a 3.5 you have a chance, but there are quite a few 4.0 students and even more 3.7 and 3.8 students that I heard talking today about their grades today. I would try to attend the next informational session. It was really helpful and its mandatory as well. The application deadline for Spring 2010 is Aug. 31-Sept. 4, for Fall 2010 its Feb.8-12. Make sure you have all your prereqs and whatever coreqs you can take ( Anatomy Physiology II, College Comp II, etc.) Like I stated, a lot of people will be applying, it sounded like it is extremely competitive.

Im really disappointed as well. Luckly they have to go by CNP rules for the spring 2010 students, so I hope I get into it. I have all the pre-reqs plus all non-nursing classes. I already took drug calculations, but they said that I would have to take it over for the CNP. I also have a 4.0 gpa, but I dont live in the JTCC service area. JTCC was the closest CNP school for me. I just hope that the Nursing Committee at JTCC really does go by the CNP regulations for us.

I got the email today about the CNP. If you applied for spring 2010, you should have received it as well. Its crazy whats going on now. We wont know til Sept. , and there is no CNP, its JTCC Online Hybrid Track Program ( can't remember exact name). Its all through JTCC now. At least that is how I understood it from the email they sent to the 50+ applicants.

I would call either germanna directly, or the commonwealth nursing program.
