  1. Hello everyone! In a bit of a dilemma here, would welcome everyone's advice. About to start a job as a new travel nurse for Kaiser in CA by June - another Med/Surg position. However, just received an offer from our PEDS ER. Would love the ER, have picked the ER but was told by my recruiter that I already am committed to Kaiser. Still waiting for my CA license, haven't signed any contract, haven't completed my requirements. Verbally, I accepted the Kaiser job before the ER offer came in. Pretty sure would love travel nursing, but would love the opportunity to learn something different than just Med/Surg, and so I think this is the perfect opportunity to switch to the ER. Am I legally bound to the Kaiser job? It is unethical and unprofessional to not honor one's commitments so I feel really bad about backing out of the travel nursing job. But right now, it comes in second to the ER job. Please help. Thanks!

WARNING: Vent Two years I've been a nurse. Two years and I feel very tired. Our other PEDS unit is closed due to the low census and we're either being floated to the NICU, PICU, Oncology, Cardiac units or being cancelled every week. If we do get to stay in our unit, we're taking care of five patients, without any clinical tech or secretary. Also tired of dealing with wacko parents. They're rare but when they're on our unit - let's just say that it's scary that people like that are raising children. Tired of being disturbed during report just because someone wants their bed changed or wants apple juice. I don't know if it's only my unit or if other units are the same. Bottomline is, I feel like giving up and leaving the Nursing field. Maybe nursing isn't for me after all.
  3. Two years as a nurse and I just feel like giving up. I don't know if it's just my unit but I'm tired of looking for equipment, moving furniture, emptying trash. I'm tired of being expected to appease wacko parents (I'm in PEDS). I'm tired of being disturbed during report when a parent wants their sheets changed or wants apple juice. I'm tired of having to deal with people who don't speak English... Maybe Nursing isn't for me....
  4. Hello Everyone, PEDS RN here thinking about joining the military. Questions are: 1. How is military nursing different? 2. Which branch (Army, Navy, Air Force) is good for nurses/medical professionals? 3. How long is the processing time from turning in your application to starting basic training? All inputs are welcome! Thanks!
  5. Been a nurse for over a year - I'm in PEDS Med-Surg - not happy anymore. Not looking forward to going to work. Our unit is a revolving door of admissions and discharges. It's especially taxing when your ER unit is sending patients at change of shift! I don't want to be asked to get apple juice when I'm swamped with work and needed to do more important stuff. I don't like changing beds. Does this mean I should get out of Nursing? I don't know where else to go. I feel lost.

Hello Everyone! Been a nurse for just over a year and I'm not happy anymore. I'm in PEDS and I'm looking for another specialty. Thing is, I don't know where to go. All I know is I'm not looking forward to going to work, plus that "click" - that special feeling that it's what I want to do - is missing. Come to think of it, it was never really there in the first place. True, the management in my unit sucks. Hospital pays below than DC (I'm in Northern VA). New grads make more than we do. We need to go to "huddle" before each shift where there's a litany of reminders and rules. Turnover rate is very high, and frankly I can understand why. Bottomline is - I can overlook the pay and politics as long as the passion for my job is there. It's missing and I don't know where to find it. Please help.
  7. New grad in Fairfax, VA hospital - $24/hour. No sign-on bonuses. DC hospitals pay a lot more, have sign-on bonuses, more tuition reimbursements - better benefits.
  8. Congratulations to you!!!! :balloons: I passed mine too, just found out online an hour ago. Took it this Wednesday, didn't even know how many questions I answered. Feels great to finally be officially "RN!" And yes, I prayed a lot too!!! So thankful to God!!! Wish you all the best!!
  9. Hello Everyone!! Passed my NCLEX!! Took it Wednesday and I just found out online today. So happy!! :balloons: Okay, would like to share my tips for all those interested: 1. Practice a lot of questions. Answer at least 100 questions every day, totaling up to more than 2000 questions before taking the test. 2. Resources used are: a. Saunder's Comprehensive Review Book b. Saunder's Strategies for Success c. Lippincott's NCLEX Review d. Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment - Practice Exercises for Med-Surg Nursing by La Charity, Kumagai, and Bartz The Saunder's comprehensive review book provides a brush-up on the fundamentals, while the Lippincott book helps reinforce the nursing scenario through questions that entail critical thinking. The prioritization book provided lots of practice and rationales on prioritizing and delegating - the boards have a lot of these questions. 3. Know lab values by heart. 4. Know prevalent health issues and means of treatment and prevention. Example: breast cancer - risk factors; Hypertension - risk factors, lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, etc. 5. Most important of all - PRAY!!! Put your trust in God and He will lead you. I wish you all the best!!
  10. Hi Everyone! Will be graduating this Saturday from an accelerated BSN program - can't believe I made it!!! Went from being an A student (pre-nursing) to a B student (nursing school) but I'm very thankful to have finished!!! Would appreciate any advice on how to study for the Boards, plan on taking it in July. Feel so blessed to be in Nursing!!! :balloons: hoya DEUS !!!
  11. A month left in this semester... My grades are always below average, and am nervous. Not doing well. Was an "A" student for my pre-reqs. Now I'm getting C's... I do admit that I haven't been doing the reading and not studying all the time. I just feel so tired. How do I make it through? Did anyone feel the same way while in Nursing school? How do you cope and how do you recover? Need some advice. Thanks!
  12. I am in Georgetown. Very happy, very satisfied with the education I'm getting.
  13. Hey Keke !! Read Barron's "Math the Easy Way." It covers all math topics and explains everything clearly. I'm a "math-anxious" student too, and am taking Chemistry right now. From the tips that I got in this site, they all advised to keep on solving problems. Math is a subject that you learn by doing, not just by memorizing. Good luck !!
  14. Thanks, Suzanne and IP ! :) Good luck to everyone !
  15. Hi Suzanne! It's through my Mom, sent the application almost three years ago. Processing is at least 8 years. Will be starting Nursing school this Spring, am in the Accelerated Program (16 months). Thanks for all your help ! :)
