Background of a Case Manager
Hi all, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind looking at my background to see if I have the skills to do case management: I am currently a research nurse working in a small division so I have multiple protocols (clinical trials) I handle. I get insurance approval/pre -certification/verification of coverage, write appeals for denials, fill prescriptions, find home health care and set up care with agencies, set up pt/ot, psych outpatient visits, set up future appointments with other doctors and order tests, and triage patient illnesses/ailments to the ER or our doctor or to an appropriate doctor. I have 1 yr experience as a research nurse and 2 in bedside oncology, do you think I have the skills to be a case manager, I think I have the interest (I very much enjoy my job but need to change facilities)! Thank you!! Kat

The most horrible things instuctor's say...
Haha oh wow...here we go... Psych instructor who requested all students fill out a card listing any psychological problems they had/concerns about psych nursing that might interfere with the course, promised they would be confidential, and then at the end of orientation went through the cards one by one, and holding them out in front of her so the names were clearly visable. Same instructor telling the students to stand up, and turn around, picking out a student who was well endowed, telling her to stand up by herself and then asking the whole class to name what body part she needed to cover up better. I had tonsillitis for the first time in my life and was hoorifice during med-surg class., My med-surg instructor decided that I needed surgery. What was more, I had better call the surgeon and schedule it in the next couple weeks or else I would miss too much class and might fail out. When I assured her it wasn't that bad, she told me that I needed to get my priorities in order and schedule the surgery, and that as a nursing student I needed to become more responsible. No joke.

What Chicago Hospitals are Hiring??
It was luck...the Loyola HR manager said I got my application in at the exact right time...they had thousands of applicants for their open positions and just skimmed the first hundred or so applicants...keep putting them out there...you'll get something

Should we give up our Peds/Maternity DrEaMs?
You should consider working in the ER for a couple years, I did a mere 3 month internship in a trauma center and got to triage loads of moms in labor, take care of kids, do pregnancy tests, do patient education for expectant moms and parents, got to stabilize PICU-bound babies and kids all the time ...It really is a GREAT environment to get both Peds and Maternity experience!

STILL don't have a job?? Vent here!
Chicago is no better. I am at my wits end applying to nearly every hospital in a 60 miles radius of Chicago. Sent about 60 applications, recommendation letters, transcripts, not a single interview!!! I too graduated in May, BSN with honors from a top nursing school, passed NCLEX with 75 questions, have nurse intern, tech and a ton of volunteering experience. Its even worse when I hear about so many of my classmates getting jobs at the places that denied me . I don't know what to do, but I am considering waitressing or bartending so I can make a little money...;(

Does anyone go to/graduated from UIC nursing?
I don't know about St. Louis nursing schools, but anything connected to Barnes hospital would be awesome. I got accepted to Rush U in Chicago and now I am mad I didn't go...also West Suburban which is connected to a huge hospital system- Resurrection Health Care, and their program basically guarantees a R.N. new graduate job for their alumni. I would try to go to a nursing school attached to a hospital system or has contracts with major hospitals...UIC in Chicago you can get Northwestern and Childrens which would be great to work at and easy to get your foot in the door.

Does anyone go to/graduated from UIC nursing?
I went to UIC Urbana and just graduated this May. I must caution you about one thing...a lot of us are without a job now because our clinicals are in obscure places like Mattoon and Danville and Decatur where no one wanted to stay on as an R.N. and by the time we graduated all the C.N.A's and nursing students from Chicago got snapped up as new R.N.'s at those hospitals. Think about where you eventually want to work as an R.N. My leadership clinical could have been in Chicago in Childrens Memorial Hospital, for example, and I could have gotten my dream job if I went to the Chicago campus or a Chicago nursing school. Now I am with my BSN RN from UIC Urbana thinking about working at Starbucks...

Non-Hospital Jobs...
I am having a killer time finding any hospital jobs as a new R.N. in Chicago. Does anyone have any non-hospital R.N. examples/recommendations other than LTC I could pursue? I have already considered.... 1. Planned Parenthood 2. DCFS 3. Free health clinics for volunteer experience Any ideas would be much appreciated....:nuke:

The trick worked for me and I passed (found out this morning on quick results). I had 75 questions and felt like I knew for SURE I got about 8 right out of the 75. After the exam I looked up tons questions and found out that I missed A LOT. But I still passed on 75! Don't give up hope!
