Hi all, I need some advice. I injured myself on the job in february and now am unable to do bedside nursing due to the amount of pain I'm in. I am in the workers comp system right now but am looking for how to get back working again doing something that doesn't require me to take significant amount of narcotics just to make it through a shift. This is the suggestion I received from the doc btw which is unsafe for my patients and also violates the nurse practice act. I was wondering if anyone knows of jobs available for nurses outside of direct patient care. I have applied with life plans and have an interview with them. I recently started a part-time job as a LVN clinical instructor making 19 dollars less per hour than I did in the hospital. I'm still recovering but extremely slow and don't know if I will ever fully recover so I'm trying to be proactive and find comparable employment to my full-time inpatient RN job. I've looked into case management, requires experience, I can't do home health because I've heard its very physical, frequent lifting pushing or pulling is no bueno for me. I'm working on my master's in nursing education but wont be done for two more years (I saw the writing on the wall after my injury and decided to enroll). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I posted this in California because that is where I live now. I have almost 9 years of inpatient medsurg/cardiac/tele experience. Thanks in advance!

I agree. I always eat a piece of fruit on the way home after shopping at the farmers market and I am not delusional about the number of people that have handled said fruit. There are community germs that are important for our immune systems and then there are the nasty type that we create in the hospital environment. Those are the ones I have no desire to keep!

It depends on the assignment I have for the day. If its all MRSA and Cdiff type of patients both in my assignment or predominantly on the unit then I remove my scrubs immediately upon getting home and throw them in the wash with color safe bleach (scrubs are blue). Vinegar also does a great job of disinfecting. Also you have to factor in that PPE doesn't always cover all exposed parts of your uniform. The difficult part is keeping your family from hugging you at the door before you change! Sometimes I'm too tired for a shower but I definitely drop my scrubs in the wash, can't bring myself to put them with my regular clothes in the hamper. For reference I've been a nurse for 9 years cardiac/med/surg.

I would love to have a union at my hospital. No one gets breaks and we are forced to take lunch at the end of our shift if we cant go earlier. In California the work load is so much higher than in Michigan where I came from. We were not union there but didn't need it. Here is California its a different story.

I agree!I decided to return for my Master's after getting injured at work and I'm in my mid 30s. You never think its going to happen to you but bedside nursing is hard on your body and it's better to have a way out before you need it.

I am a BSN with 8 years of experience in cardio/tele/medsurg and recently got a job as a part-time clinical instructor for a VN program as its harder to get a job teaching in an RN program without a masters now. I was told you needed 3 years of clinical experience not sure of the degree probably ADN would be fine. The pay is definitely a step down from bedside nursing but it isn't always about the money. I got hurt at work, recovered but realized I can't do that type of work forever! If you want to get your foot in the door for teaching like me then a VN program might be a good way to get experience as the requirements aren't as high as an Rn program. Any job beside bedside nursing seems to pay lower though so you definitely have to weigh your options. Also I'm getting my Master's in nursing education so this way when I'm done I will have had 2 years of teaching experience and hopefully that will help me land a great job then:sarcastic:. Also I interviewed with another college who had need for someone to teach as little as a class per week theory or skills/lab which is totally doable with another full time job. I also currently work 3 days a week full time at my hospital job. Feel free to ask me for more info!

Highway hypodermics has a list of travel companies they rate with syringes (cute) it really helps to see what companies really offer. alot of the companies I hadnt even heard of till I saw the list. They are not the ones that pay to be first on search engines and splash their ads on nursing magazine pages but I guess they dont have to. I thought this was common knowledge but there seems to be many nurses on here that are confused about the many companies to pick from. FYI some companies are actually one company with many smaller departments that masquerade as separate agencies so it makes it even more confusing. Good luck.

Do not go with American mobile they are all about the tax advantage plan and making you responsible to the IRS for large amounts of money that are "tax free" check out highway hypodermics they rate companies that is where I found mine

Did you save money by getting an unfurnished apartment and buying the bare essentials yourself? We should start a website on which travel nurses can trade furniture. That would be cool!

Would you recommend 5th wheel or RV? I was thinking of doing this too as I'm planning on traveling with pet and kids. Also is it pretty insulated against heat/cold? Thanks!

I'm planning on traveling this August and considered an rv because I'm taking my child. I've been asking around and one nurse I work with mentioned the atmosphere at rv parks not being conducive for children due to fulltimers (said they were old gritty Vietnam vet types and loners) how true is this in your experience?
