FSU Accelerated BSN Spring 2010
just FYI: most of my books are promised to the one or two of you I've emailed back... yes I'll see all the other 'Accelerators' tonight and will pass the word on books - I'll let ya'll know if some of them will sell them to ya'll (instead of taking them back to the bookstore or amazon). I'm sure some of them will. I've been told that we'll be able to take the NCLEX in January. I know some of the students are counting on it because several have already gotten jobs and have start dates in mid-January. Not a lot of time to study, but we've been pretty much studying all along! They've given us several study books, the Kaplan study session, and Kaplan site to use, so we have plenty of resources! Good luck! It will fly by! Ceekitty

should I do my internship in ICU or L&D
Okay so I am just confused about where to do my 6-week internship at the end of my program... I want to become a nurse practitioner but not really sure which area yet. My original thought was family practice, but after my rotations, I discovered I loved women's health and L&D, so I'm considering nurse midwife or something else now... When I graduate, I'd like to work in L&D for a while so I can figure things out, make some $$$, and apply for grad school. I thought I should do my internship in L&D since I loved it so much and that's where I'm hoping to work. I am moving out of state when I graduate, however, so my faculty advised me to do an internship in ICU or Med-Surg so I'd get more experience in these areas. I signed up for an IMCU internship but now I am doubting my decision. I'm just not sure what would be best: do what I really want and go in the direction I think I'm interested in - OR - get that different experience that I haven't gotten yet to see if it might be something I'm interested in. If I do the ICU internship, will I still have a good chance of getting an L&D job out of school? Just not sure what to do (sigh). Any help or guidance out there? If I'm going to change I have to do it in the next day or two... I'm trying not to be too worried about short term, too, since I know I want to be a nurse practitioner. I want what's best overall... Thx! ~ceekitty

Hey, Don't stress yet - it shouldn't be too hard to find a patho class for fall! Like PBteach said, we had people who took it online (Kenyon College, Ohio)... So look into that! Patho is a requirement for the program - it is a prereq for many of the classes, plus you really dont have time to take it during the year anyway! (we are swamped with the schedule as it is - summer is a killer!!!)... But we are 1/2 way done with the whole program this week - so that is amazing!!! Just finishing up our first hospital clinical... must say it's been interesting but very busy. Pretty sleep deprived at the moment and studying for a final! Just look up that online patho class and good luck! Ceekitty

hi ya'll! if you havent seen us posting much, its because the program keeps us EXTREMELY busy. for real! i have pretty much no free time, and when i do, i'm spending it with my hubby! don't plan on making any trips home or big plans unless you have a break (spring break, 1 week b/w spring & summer, & 2 weeks b/w summer & fall)! it's just so much work & you'll get behind if you don't spend your weekends working on papers, assignments, studying for tests, etc. our group has been great though. it's really small - only 17 of us. we work together good and really theres no other way to get through. each class has objectives for tests, so we split them up as a group (if theres 100 objectives on a test, each person will get 5 or 6 objectives to work on and email them to the rest of the group) - you get the idea. our teachers have been great so far. there have definitely been some 'bumps' and 'glitches' as far as last minute scheduling, extra fees, and etc. but we are a VERY vocal group and give them TONS of feedback, so i know they've already planned some changes for the next groups that come through. i think it's a good program overall, just a lot of work! if you don't think you can hang, then definitely go the normal route! you have to be EXTREMELY motivated to learn the skills, practice on your own time (if you ever have it!), etc. i hope this is making sense. i'm a little tired and cant believe im even spending time on this when i have so much to do! LOL... so yes it's doable but it's hard. we've all passed so far (have to keep 75 in all classes to pass) (: don't let patho intimidate you too much - yes that is a very hard class as well and keeps you on your toes. but if you can do well in that then you should be fine! i know a handful of people failed it and couldnt continue with the program. it's nice to go ahead and do it and get it out of the way though - and it does come in handy later! good luck to you! don't know when i'll be back on here, but thought i'd post something (:

Hope ya'll had a great Christmas! I've been crazy busy until now but now I will finally have a week to relax before we start. I'm kinda nervous LOL. Our books are finally in I hear; I'm going to get them from Bills b/c my office gave me a nice gift certificate there as a going away present! I don't know if I'll have time to open any books, but I'll get my boyfriend to download all the stuff onto my itouch at some point atleast. See ya'll soon!!

just fyi: the con told me that there were some minor changes to the textbook list, so hold off on purchasing books for a couple more days. they will send us an email with the course syllabi and textbook information... i looked at all the books we have to buy, and it's pretty expensive. i kindof freaked out at first, because it was a lot of books, but they listed all the books we'll need for the whole year (not just the semester); so it's about what i thought per cost (roughly $500/semester)... hope ya'll are doing well - happy holidays!

FSU Accelerated BSN Spring 2010
orientation wasn't bad... actually pretty informative & they stuck to the schedule. CON said our orientation will probably be Tues, Jan 5th (the day before classes start) from 1-5pm. we should be getting more info on it soon. They also said that our booklist will go online (CON website, left side of page) on Dec 1, so you may want to start getting books then. have a good weekend (:

Wishingonastar85 - like pbteach said, I think you are probably good with your blackberry... The things you have to upload are for the background check. You can either fax your documents in (mostly attachments in one of our CON emails) or scan and upload them. Is that what you were asking about? Hopefully orientation on Friday will fly; I'm not really sure what we are doing there. Someone said something about advisement for classes, but we dont need that b/c we already know what we are taking... It's supposed to last from 8am-4pm. CON told me that our group of 20-24 (not everyone accepted the offer to attend) are the only ones in all our classes (for the first semester atleast - yay!). I think I finally have all my stuff in line for next semester. I'm definitely ready to get started and see what the load will be like. Anyway I'm goin to bed now - I'm sooooo tired - I hope this post made sense LOL (: Maybe we'll meet up at orientation ~Ceekitty

FSU Accelerated BSN Spring 2010
yeah we have to go to an all day orientation next friday (8-5 i think)... unless you attended one already a previous semester? i can't remember if i'd gotten an email about it or what, but go to: http://nsfp.fsu.edu/register.html and you can register and find any info on it there!

FSU Accelerated BSN Spring 2010
My orientation is Nov 20 too - it was the only day I could register for, so maybe it is the one for 'seniors' or 'transfers'. I got an email about financial aid from the college of nursing and responded - did you get it? It gave a website to go to and asked if we filled out our FAFSA yet... I've been searching for a while for other scholarships, but haven't found much that apply to me. I'd get started now on my background check stuff if i were you! I JUST got finished with all of it and i started it the week it was sent to us. Yes it is a lot of expenses right now - i bought the background check, my scrubs, and the school insurance in one week and it was a killer on my bank account! But I think that is it for all the extra stuff for the program. I think from now on it'll just be the tuition and books (I hope!!). Anyway congrats and I look forward to meeting you as well (:

I have no clue what the stats were for people who applied/got accepted. pbteach might be able to tell you more... I'm sure it's pretty competitive though

Patho is great - a lot of material to read & study, but interesting stuff. The instructor I have is EXCELLENT - i highly recommend taking her if you can. I only took the HESI once. I think I read somewhere that you have to wait 6 months to take it again, or something like that... The testing center could probably give you more info. The books I used to study were: Nursing School Entrance Exam (CliffsTestPrep) and Nursing School Entrance Exam (Learning Express Education Exams: Complete Preparation Gudies) I basically needed a refresher b/c it had been a while since I'd taken my sciences, but the test wasn't that bad!

Who else has passed out?
I was just reading about this yesterday... blood is one of the only 'fears' that people pass out with - b/c your blood pressure rises (like all other fears) and then falls (unlike other fears). This blood pressure falling is what gets people. I read some tips on how to prevent it - how to relax with deep breathing but also tense up body parts so as to keep your blood pressure from dipping too low... I do a similar thing to help with 'sea sickness' on the water - tense up my stomach and then I don't get as nauseous. Maybe this'll help you... Good luck!

Thank you PetroNole! I actually responded to your Q on another thread, so hopefully you'll see that... FSU seems like a great nursing school so far, by the way - I am in one of the classes now and the teachers are amazing - very supportive and want you to succeed. Good luck on your studies!

HESI Test at FSU
Hmmm... The FSU testing center actually has a study guide (which I didn't know about until the day of the test!) - one girl I know relied totally on that for her studies. I studied a couple of books that I got off amazon for real cheap: Nursing School Entrance Exam (CliffsTestPrep) Nursing School Entrance Exam (Learning Express Education Exams: Complete Preparation Gudies) Hope that helps!! Good luck to you (:

How to get through this?
Girl I feel for you. I was in South Mississippi when Katrina happened. A lot of families had to move in with relatives short-term and then relocate. It took a while to rebuild the coast and there's still some places that haven't been rebuilt. People were amazing and understanding and pulled together during the crisis; and the government came in to give jobs and stimulus... I hope ya'll get some similar help...

hey girl - you have to have 15 posts before you can send a private message (PM), but you can receive them so I'm gonna send you one now!! I have an itouch my mom gave me a couple months ago as an early Christmas gift (she got an iphone and didnt need her itouch anymore). I didn't think I'd use it, but now I'm glad I have it and I can use it in the program. I'd recommend the itouch unless you can afford the iphone (I can't afford the monthly charge for that!). Anyway I'm sending you a PM now...

HESI A2 Entrance Test
