Surfactant use in premature infants

NICU nametags and cribcards
we have the usual blue/pink crib cards with their info on it (dob,wt, etc) just like the well baby nursery. A very talented nurse we have on Days does calligraphy, and makes each babe their own name card that hangs elsewhere on their bed. Then we decorate them up with stickers (we are big into the suzy zoo here). The parents love them and they are great momentos.

staying awake on night-shift
Hi there... I work nights (7p-7a) and sometimes I have the hardest time staying awake. I guess my biggest problem is getting enough sleep before hand... But my question to you all is: What do you do at night (when you have the spare time) to keep from getting too tired!!! TIA

What happens in your NICU when you are short staffed?
we pull extra nurses from other maternal child units (which happens quite frequently... they will get the feeder grower assignment, no ivs, pretty basic) that are available and then we start calling in for OT... if no one can do that then they use incentive pay... fat cash that hurts the dept budget... needless to say it doesnt happen much!
