  1. Yes, frontier nursing univ is quarterly. Winter, Spring, Sunmer and Fall. I start their FNP DNP program Dec 2015.
  2. I just got my letter of acceptance this morning
  3. I am from southern california
  4. Any word from other 145 applicants or from the school itself?
  5. sorry! I applied to 145 NOT 143 my bad
  6. Ive applied to the FNP class 143. I wish they would tell us within 1 month if we are accepted.
  7. I attended/graduated school in DC, so I had to take extra classes (did them online for a very small fee) to obtain my certification since I did not attend school in cali. If I am correct, if you graduate from a school with a bsn in cali, you will automatically be qualified to obtain a phn. In nursing school during my public health rotation, I realized I wanted to work in that field; specifically maternal-child public health. I currently work at a Native American clinic as a phn wearing many hats. I complete home visits with elders, pregnant mothers and families with small children; administer immz and run flu clinic; teach classes to elders, families and pregnant mothers; drive/accompany patients to their outside/clinic appointments; wound dressings, as needed; complete and manahe med boxes; and case manage all of my patients care. I'm sure I am missing some other things but that is the majority of it all.
  8. Ive been a nurse for 4.5 yrs and a PHN for 4. Ask away!
  9. Usually 1yr of general nursing experience. But you have lots, so you would be a great candidate depending on the specific job. My organization hired a new grad w only summer camp nurse experience.

  11. Thanks for defending me! Yes, in Cali in order to be a PHN, you must have a BSN degree and be awarded with a PHN certificate, which qualifies you as a PHN.
  12. In order to be a PHN...you have to have a BSN
  13. Yes, I am a supervisor. No, my husband has a very high position at his job, plus he wrks for close family friends so he has a lot of responsibility and adjusting his sched is not an option :-/ I work as a PHN at 2locations at my job, so me going p/t will be very difficult since I have to cover 2 separate locales and am a supervisor. However, it never hurts to ask my boss...even still I wld need a nanny or sitter while I am at wrk. I wld rather have that but have no one I can trust in my area (only been here 1yr) to care for my newborn in my home while I am not present.
  14. I will be having my #2daughter mid february. My 2yo is already in school fulltime. I work m-f and am unsure of what I will do when the baby gets here? My mom lives with us but is currently wrking and unable to help. We live 2hrs from the rest of our family (and even if we lived close there wld be no one to help since everyone wrks fulltime). I refuse to put my newborn in daycare bc I do not trust anyone w my child (espec when they cannot talk). Also, if we do decide to put her in daycare, she wld be in a dif one than my 2yo bc her school starts at 2yo. Or I wld be forced to switch schools so they can both be in the same one. AND daycare is expensive for multi children. Anyone in a similar situation or can offer suggestions? Btw, im the breadwinner so it wld be a financial strain for me to stay at home...
  15. Thanks for the insight !
  16. Which is very sad. That is the 1 thing I despise about working w that population. A little revelation to their ignorance wld make phns lives and jobs that much more easier
  17. I graduated with my MPH last yr but there are no opportunities where I reside. Honestly, DC is the central locale for those seeking careers with their MPH. If I was in a dif stage in my life right now, I wld definitely move there bc I often feel it was a waste of time and $$ since I have not and probably will not be able to utilize it in the few yrs to come.
  18. Yes. That is why it is termed "public health". It is geared towards helping those in the community and public who cant otherwise afford healthcare or insurance; those in urban and rural areas. And yea, some of them have attitudes and do not want to be helped. But one has to be called for this type of work bc if this is not something you love to do (help those who otherwise dont realize they need the help), then one shld seek other areas of nursings.
  19. Most pub h rn positions will require a minimum of 1-2yrs nursing hosp experience, while some may except new grads....just depends on where. I wanted to get straight into the field postgrad but unfortunately there were no openings at the time I was a new grad 4yrs ago. But after 2yrs, I finally got the opportunity. Pay is lower than hosp jobs -for the most part. However, if you work in ph, you have to expect not to make a lot due to the nature of the job. I love ph and have also gotten my mph but have not been able to use it due to lack of opport in my area (city).
  20. Thank you for the advice !
  21. Thanks you all! As a matter of fact, I just recently met a new business owner in my town and plan to have him assist me with my ideas and marketing. I hope to get it going very soon!
  22. Thanks for the feedback!
  23. They are hiring in my area of SoCal, and I just applied. So excited because I am expecting my 2nd child soon (and already have a 2yo) and need an option to be at home. Hope I hear back soon. Does anyone have experience with Aetna?
  24. I am an RN (4yrs) with a BSN, PHN and MPH. I have a strong passion for maternal child and public health. My husb and I are trying to think of a business where we can offer services to the community in which we live, probably specifically tailored to young moms and children, but overall to women, children and families. Im thinking along the lines of a resource center that offers education, support, CPR classes, case management and possibly transportation/accomoaniment to dr appts. I also want to integrate a home visiting program for new mothers after giving birth. My husb would be over the financial matters since that is his expertise. Where should I start?
