Mayo New Grad program
Laker2011-I interviewed last week also, and was told that she would be finishing up interviews this week and that it would probably be next week before any offers were extended. She also did say that we would know one way or the other via letters if we were not selected. Fingers crossed for us!

Can Anyone Give Me Another Perspective?
Crystal 74, I am a block 4 CGCC student. I can say that I have had a positive experience with this program. I went into it knowing about some of the negatives that were out there, but was determined to have an open mind. It is a lot of work, a big time commitment, and at times required more independent study that I had thought. On the whole, the instructors in the classroom and in clinicals were great and I have had a good clinical experience as well. There are of course some seemingly silly assignments and projects that I felt took up my study time, but being organized, keeping up with the reading and having good study habits should helped me be successful. I hope that answers your questions, feel free to send me a private message if there are any specific questions. Is the next placement on 2/22? Good luck on getting placed!!

New Grad program at Mayo
RN in white-- Congratulations on the New grad program it sounds very exciting. Can I ask what the interview process was like? A panel or individual? Just curious! I am also curious about their ranking system, makes me wonder what you get points for... Thanks

Dosage Calc. Study Aids before NS
I went to dosagehelp.com and did questions constantly, I even have them send me one a day. We learned about half the concepts in Block 1 and the other in Block 2, but since I had done the exact thing you are by getting a jump before you start, it was all kind of review, and a big relief as I didn't have a problem passing my dosage tests. Our instructors also included math on our regular exams, so that was nice "easy" points. Good luck!

Structured Nursing Review Course?
I have taken this class in block 1 and 2 at CGCC, and I felt it was helpful. We practiced nclex type questions based on whatever the lecture was for the week as a group. I don't know if this is how other instructors teach this class, but what I also found was the teacher would often give extra tidbits of info, or expound on a lecture topic and those "tips" usually came in handy on the exams. Maybe you can email the instructor to see how they have the class structured. Good luck with your studies.

CGCC: Enter at your own risk!
Ok, I understand that some of my comments seem to have been taken the wrong way. As I stated in my post the comments that I made were not directed at any one person and I apologize if some took it that way and were hurt. And I also do not think that if a person does not pass a block and needs to redo it makes them unsuitable for a nursing career, I actually think that it further proves their dedication to go through it all again, and I am sure come out a better nurse for it. But again it was not my intention to cause any hurt feelings.

CGCC: Enter at your own risk!
I studied in a very similar way. I would read the info prior to lecture, take notes during lecture, then make concept flash cards focusing mainly on the symptoms and the interventions, with a focus on anything that was specific to the disorder. Then came the nclex questions as Chechy did, lots and lots of questions, I have numerous nclex study guides and have used them all over the past two semesters.

CGCC: Enter at your own risk!
I to am a student at CGCC, I feel that any program is what you make of it. This program is new compared to the other schools and it is an evolving process to work out any flaws. I don't know if the above student was in my class, I just finished Block 2 and the failure rate was higher than I expected (a number of students passed easily, so it can be done). Many students were not passing going into the final and trying to pull it out at the last minute, so in reality that rarely works, especially with a nursing class final exam. I did feel that the exams covered the material that was on the syllabus, maybe not what was specifically what was in the lectures, but in addition to the lectures, we are expected to read the text and apply the information to the test. Yes some some of the lectures are unorganized and uninspired, but this is not a core class where we memorize info and spit it back out, the whole point is for us to apply it to our patients. My next statement is NOT directed at the original poster. Not everyone is cut out to be a nurse. The way this program is set up is that everyone who does the pre-reqs, and the NET or HESI (not sure which it is currently) can put their name on the list and get in. These programs are designed to weed people out who may not be suited for a nursing career. Like I have said before it is a different kind of learning. So the grass isn't necessarily greener. Every program has flaws and things they could do better, but on the flip side, every student has flaws and things they could do better. I feel that I have been successful because I have made nursing school a priority, now I know everyone says this but, I spend my evenings and weekends studying, reading and rereading the material, being in the lab practicing, missing out on some family and friend time... My take is that it is only 4 semesters of my life and then I have achieved my ultimate goal. Prospective students, I hope you don't make a decision on where you go to school by reading a message board post, investigate for yourself.

Advice, tips, and tricks!
Be prepared and willing to give up some personal things during school.. Nursing school is 2 years of your life...4 semesters....your kids will not become delinquents if you cannot participate in every school activity, the church/school/sports activities will still be there when you graduate. I have observed that the students who struggle and/or fail are the one's unwilling to make sacrifice. Nursing school is the time to be a little selfish and put your needs first...hopefully you have an understanding spouse and believe me your children will understand eventually and come to realize your accomplishment when you graduate and fulfill your dream. This tops my advice list for new students. My brain is fried from preparing for finals and practicums since the semester is winding down. Good luck. W. (graduation 05/2011!)
