  1. What actually is NCC........Neonatal Certification Certificate or Critical Care....?
  2. wow tiki..........we need more preceptors who think like you.......I had the preceptor from hell......and get this.....she was suppose to be my friend..........
  3. We just started primary care in our unit and I have a primary care baby and im also an associate care nurse for another baby.....in the unit....I enjoy it because I basically get to know the babies I am working with and the parents like it as well. In primary nursing we are responsible for all the discharge paperwork and all the things that need to be done to prepare the baby for discharge meaning we oversee and make sure if the baby had an eye exam the dates are documented and the hearing screens are done ...PKU and all that stuff....so it also helps us to really dig deep into the baby's care and read up on our babies so we basically know what has been going on with the baby even when we are not at work working with the baby.
  4. Prmenrs you are fortunte to have RT to retape ET tubes as our RT do not do that they are so basic. They do not do anything except mind the vents and neb txments and run blood gases. The first NICU I worked at RT drew the CBG's and also helped with taping of ET tubes and set up your hoods and tents.
  5. Thank you all very much, it just made me nervous as at our facility if a baby becomes extubated accidentally we have to write up incident reports about it and that made me even more nervous about it......I am taking assignments with intubated babies and I also watch the other nurses do just as you guys have described but it is hard for me to do it but I am willing to hang in there and give it a good try.....
  6. Two weeks ago we were swamped with babies (vents, multiple births. etc.....) but now the unit has only 13 babies so it has slowed down a lil bit......I do not know what to expect when I return to work but the summer is coming which means more blackouts and more romance and more babies being made.......lol......so I plan to enjoy the break for now.
  7. Gompers You really broke down the answers and questions I really like how you organized your reply.......We can tell you are a nurse by your ability to organize your words and answer questions in an understandable way.....I like that ......just thought I would share that with everyone...................(smile)
  8. I always had a fear of taking care of intubated babies because everytime I would change their positions or change the radiant warmer linens my baby would end up extubated is there some kind of way to change the linens without asking someone to hold the baby, some kind of technique, as not all the time is someone available to hold the baby for me........I would appreciate some of you seasoned nurses techniques.....thank you in advance.
  9. Peaceful 2100 I am glad you are keeping with what is important to you.......and I wish you well in your endeavors.....I love working in the NICU and I basically try to get along with everyone.....life is to short to worry about things you will never be able to change........you can only change yourself and that is what I do on a regular basis a reality check on myself......Chicago is a multi- cultural city with many people in it and I like that too....I love cultural atmospheres it gives flavor to our NICU........I love taking care of the lil tiny ones and I pray I have found my niche in nursing for now..........Please keep us informed as to when you get in the NICU....
  10. undefined this is just my opinion of the situation ......i am a (jamaican) black nurse and i work in the nicu but i did not have a problem getting in, the first nicu i was hired as a new grad....once i got in the nicu i felt the racism and the divisions of how different ones were treated due to skin color. i found that the aa nurse as well as the hispanic or latino nurses were treated kind of bad but i work in a diverse environment in the nicu i am in now with filipinos, aa nurses, hispanic, white and carribean decent.....and issues do come up fom time to time but it is mostly with the filipino nurses......i hope one day nurses can learn to not eat their young and bind together as one big band and i think the nursing field could gain a lot if we did. :)
  11. I work 3 12hour nights a week as well......but I am contemplating on joining the weekend program.....where I work Sat and Sun 12 hour nights and get a 80 hour paycheck every two weeks with a little higher salary........but the down side to it all is there are no benefits.....I wanted to use the benefit of them paying for me to go to school but I guess I can sacrifice that benefit and pay for myself to go to school but have the whole week off to attend classes go on vacation and stay on top of my household.........
  12. RydenTate, I really enjoyed your photos of your baby.........and it makes me appreciate more my job and it gives a better perception of the parents point of view as well.............may God Bless you and your family.................:)
  13. I decided to become a NICU nurse when I did my clinical rotation for Peds and my instructor sent me to the NICU to be an observer. I was so fascinated with the lil ones and how the nurses were taking care of them. It seems as though the lil ones appreciated being able to live from day to day and I wanted to be a part of helping the lil ones to live from day to day. You cannot believe the struggle and the fight these lil ones have because it is our inborn tendency to breathe and live and they are fighters....and I am a soldier helping them to win their battle...... :kiss
