  1. I've been working on a rehab/skilled care unit in LTC for seven months and have a second interview tomorrow at the Institute. I went to an open house/job fair for nurses they recently had about a week ago; all applicants were offered interviews on t...
  2. Claiming suicide can get you out of anything!

Any more than it's fair for this man, a threat to staff (not to mention patients), to be "dumped" in an ER. While people get killed in jail, there's even more of a risk of this man escalating to physical violence in an ER that does not have the pers...
  3. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

Okay, staff -- it's annoying enough when you yell conversations down the hallways, but for the love of god -- do you HAVE to do it right by the nurse's station when I'm on the phone with a doctor? Family members: If we provide such "poor" care for yo...
  4. advise please

Don't get yourself too stressed out, Greta. I think that that statement, "don't trust her, she'll get you fired", was just a general statement (as opposed to a statement that was based on the actual situation). I know enough from experience in my o...
  5. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

If you want to know where all of your CNAs and nurses go, step outside of your cushy office, Ms. DON, and spend just ten minutes in my unit.
  6. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

You, as the supervisor, want me to come down to your office just so that you can tell me how to apply a warm compress on a compromised IV site? First of all, what kind of idiot do you think I am? I'm a beginning nurse, not a stupid one! Also, why c...
  7. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

my god, thank you for that. my last preceptor disappeared out of thin air for a fifteen minute break, and left me alone on the medcart on my first day of orientation. good god.
  8. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

    AMEN...
  9. LTC vs SNF vs SUBACUTE??

Forgive my ignorance, but is subacute the same as LTAC??
  10. Does anyone LOVE Geriatrics?

I love babies, but they're so fragile...so many things could go wrong with such tiny lives. It's not for me, either. I love geriatrics, too. I someday hope to work in hospice and psych (geri is a special interest of mine); my community nursing clin...
  11. Does anyone LOVE Geriatrics?

Many of your critical care patients will involve the geriatric population.
  12. How in the freaking world are you a nurse???

I see the point that you're trying to make. While it may sound like a good idea, it's actually quite biased. As a nurse with Asperger's disorder and ADHD, I never would have fulfilled your standards. When I graduated high school, my GPA was a 3.1 d...
  13. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

If you want to talk trash about another staff member or resident, by all means -- go straight ahead. But, don't involve me, especially when there's family around or doctors around...
  14. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

    That's a good one...
  15. Documentation "No-No's"?

Alright (experienced) nurses, I need your assistance. I know that when documenting, there are certain terms that are considered taboo for writing out; ie, "Mr. X hasn't had a bowel movement in the past 9 shifts; will follow up with physician for pos...
  16. First job in long-term care facility

Wow, that's ridiculous! Does this nurse know you're a beginning LPN, Cappuccino? If she does and you've already explained to her that you're trying to learn as much as you can during orientation, request a different mentor. I know you may not want...
  17. Documentation "No-No's"?

thanks for the chuckles! another thing i know: no matter how "friendly" you are with your co-workers (nurses, aides, even the charge nurse), don't complain or talk about a difficult patient to them, either. you don't know how your words will be take...
  18. Documentation "No-No's"?

Very, very true. I have seen this before too. Charting is NOT about pinning blame onto others; it's about charting objective information and your nursing interventions on the patient! I feel that if all nurses, doctors, interdisciplinary staff, etc...
  19. Documentation "No-No's"?

Thank you for all of your responses!! This turned out to be a great thread! I'll also be sure to check out the JCAHO site. Someone suggested that I take a seminar on appropriate documentation -- that's a great idea, but my workplace has yet to off...
  20. Well, as a newer nurse, most likely an IV syringe as I tend to be a real pain with my frequent questions.
  21. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

Everything about this post cracked me up.
  22. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

When I'm trying to pass meds on my medcart and you're a "dutiful" volunteer carting people for physical therapy, don't come up and ask me every 2 min, "has Mrs. X had her meds yet? Can we go now?" Well, gee, maybe if you had shown me WHICH paperwork ...
  23. New Grad in LTC - Feeling Overwhelmed (21 pts)

Ain't that the truth. I cannot tell you how SICK I get of hearing, "oh, you *just* work in a nursing home? Did you try to go to any hospitals?" LOL. Hospitals have more acuity, but LTC is a different level of chaos in itself. It doesn't matter if ...
  24. That's one of the first things I was taught during my orientation into LTC nursing. It has helped me tremendously. It definitely helps to call the pharmacy just in case something with the fax might be broken, or something is up on their end...etc. ...
  25. Honest opinions on NCLEX study plan needed

I ended up doing between 150-200 questions a day (not all in one sitting; split up), and passed the NCLEX in 75 questions! YAY! Thanks for all your help!
