  1. I think it is a shame that non nurses are allowed to do this. I did it before I was a nurse and thought I knew what I was doing. The problem is that I didn't even know what I didn't know! I have had to speak to my MD twice this year about "weird" messages/results I received from the MA.
  2. I think the doctor didn't have a leg to stand on because HE signed it even if you wrote it. It is the signature that is in question. He just scapegoated you. I used to do the same things as you before I was a nurse and now I cringe at what I was allowed to do!!
  3. It looks like you didn't get an answer either and now it is a year later. Every university medical bookstore has a little "cheat sheet" laminated card with all the most common labs values on it. Hope this is not too late to help someone.
  4. Good for you! Go right for the MSN. That is where it is all headed.
  5. I think the handwriting is on the wall, most nurses will need at least a BSN. The same think is going on in the area where I live. Now is the time to get that degree!
  6. In response to Daytonite. I know they lied because in one case the manager told a version of a story in my presence and then, not even 2 minutes later, she came into the office I share with the other nurse and told a completely different story. One of the stories clearly was a lie. I am not going to spend a great deal of time explaining this since you clearly think I am lying. What makes you such an angry person that you would attack someone you don't even know? I will not be responding to you again.
  7. I agree with DaFreak71 about them only wanting a warm body. Who puts a new grad or ANY nurse in charge of 52 patients? The malpractice insurance is a must no matter where you work. It only cost about $100.00/year. A good price for peace of mind. Keep on looking. You are worth more than this job which will do nothing but put you at risk for losing a license you worked hard to get.
  8. I can only hope that roadrunner-in-icu was joking. Sleeping on the job is grounds for loss of license!! Do NOT take this advice. Patients are NOT always stable.
  9. I think Redhairded Nurse is correct. You have to get on the phone and stay one the phone. Call the hospital's switchboard and ask to be transferred to the manager's office for the unit you applied for. Even if you don't get to speak with the manager, you can leave a message that you have applied and are really interested in working on the unit. Be sure to leave the info for how she can get in contact with you! If you can move yourself w/o monetary help from the hospital, I would be sure to mention this. Money is tight now and if they think they will have to pay to move you, that might be what is holding you up.
  10. You can't do small print b/c it is an online application. Even if you go to the facility to apply, you must do it on a computer. I guess my main point was that I have friends with MSNs who don't have BSNs but the system doesn't allow them to give that information until the end of the application. Most times, you would have been ruled out based on the "front end" of the application. My second point was that I don't think you necessarily need a BSN to be a bedside nurse. Also, not all hospitals pay more for either advanced degrees or certifications. Some make it up in the clinical ladder program which I think is fair. In our area, you will not be able to advance to Level IV without either a BSN or a certification. I think this is fair. You should be recognized for your education.
  11. First, I want to say I believe you made the right decision. You were wise to go to the site and see that what they said didn't even make sense about house time a nurse spends with a patient. This is a very hard time to find a job. There WILL be one out there for you. Hang in there. No job is owrth losing your license over.
  12. In my area where the hospitals are either getting or have gotten magnet status, they need BSN & MSN nurses to do it. The biggest frustration for me is that the way the applications are set up. The question is:"Do you have a BSN?" So if you bridged from ADN to MSN, you have to answer "no" and don't even get a chance for the job! I believe there is a clear place for the ADN nurse. Do we really need all BSNs at the bedside? I don't think so. Also, as they push us to get higher and higher degrees, we are still working for the same pay! Just so you know, I am one of those nurses bridging to MSN. BTW, there was a manager who actually refused to hire an MSN b/c she didn't have a BSN!! What kind of sense does that make?
  13. What State do you live in? Here in Raleigh, NC there is NOTHING! I hear Texas has jobs. Any chance you can move? I would NOT move without a firm job offer on the table.
  14. I have been told the same thing by a nurse who lives in Texas.
  15. I can tell you that the Raleigh, NC area does NOT have jobs. Sigh...
